I was blown away to find out Angela Lansbury was a torch singer/broadway star back in the day. I was listening to some random classic Christmas tunes a month ago and one was by her.

I want to make fun of you for not knowing about this, but I just found out about detective Lennie Briscoe last year.

Why don't people tell me these things????

I also watched Tomb Raider on the plane. I thought it was a perfectly serviceable airplane movie.

Finally, another Keanu Reeves movie where any real acting is unnecessary. It's the best kind of Keanu Reeves movie. His last movie needed emotion. That was fucked from the start.

I will mention actually: Halle Berry looks good for her age.

Things happen to move the plot along

I'm shocked

That never happens in movies or television or books or games or oral traditions

Way to simplify my post.

Good writing has characters challenged, not dumbed down from how you initially portrayed them because you can't think of a way to introduce tension if they're too experienced.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Hey, we really need the youngest kid to die."
"Right. Let's make it so they're walking home one day and he has a toy that makes noise and he gets killed."
"Sounds great, but if they're all walking closely together, because they've been doing these runs for at last months, maybe a year, how would just that one kid get killed?"
"Hmmm, good question. What if we make it so he's at the back of the line and lags so his family is like 50 feet ahead when the toy makes noise?"
"Ok, but wouldn't the parents of the children think to have the kids between them? In case stuff like this happens?"
"Look, this is a Michael Bay movie and its past 5pm. Just write it up so we can go home."

[close]

For the whole movie, basically.
I like the movie a lot and I still agree with you. I can overlook these things for an interesting plot and decent set pieces.

Watched Annabelle Creation to get ready for Shazam, having seen David Sandberg's Light's Out already. Story was pretty light/stupid, but it's well directed on the tension/scares front. Thought it was actually a pretty effective haunted house flick if you just want something unsettling/creepy.

So, he's basically made 2 solid movies, but the strongest part of both of them were how creepy they were. Kinda an odd fit for Shazam but who knows.

What an incredibly bleak film with slivers of hope keeping you invested. It deftly mixes a boxing and prison scenario with the constant struggle of an addict. Youre thrown into the deep end too without any form exposition, which I love. It makes those moments where you hear about Billys life outside Thailand very impactful. That ending too. Highly recommended.

Fucking loved it. The way Jenkins allows the score to influence these profound moments made the film feel like some modern fable. It elevates the film. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous too. Id say one of my most favorite in such a film. Its close up and personal. You're made to face these characters and their emotions, just like Moonlight.

The story itself was wonderfully profound. What this institutional racism can do. The havok it wreaks on the innocent. And you are powerless to it. Theres one particular scene, or * should say sequence, where it shows you exactly what it stripped away from this character. No abstraction. You see it and his despair. This film man. I'm getting goosebumps just typing this part up.

Polar is actually quite entertaining. It sounds like a crappy John Wick rip-off, but it's actually quite a fun movie. The genres it's classed under are Action, Crime, but I would also add Dark Comedy into that. It's also trashy to a level you don't see that often these days.

Worth a watch.

Yeah. Essentially it has a strong b-movie sensibility to it. As I said the film is kind of trashy, not in the sense that it is really low-budget, or poor quality necessarily, but rather in tone and aesthetics.

For instance, it starts with a hot girl getting out of a pool with a skimpy bathing suit and the camera lewdly fixating on her ass. You have a group of assassins closing in on Johnny Knoxville's character (a cameo role really) who is then assassinated while this girl is giving him a blow job. The scene ends with Johnny Knoxville in a pool of blood with a massive erection(seriously lol). It is totally shameless in its gratuitous sex and violence in a way that trashy b-movies used to be.

I predict the movie will eventually become a bit of a Cult classic. I will also mention that the ending kind of hints at a possbile sequel. I imagine there probably will be a sequel as well.

Saw Peter Jackon's new documentary on WW1 They Shall Not Grow Old

The restoration is incredible and there's a 30 min documentary on the making of at the end that's just as interesting as the main doc. Just restoring all the footage to proper framerate is mind blowing. The main doc is depressing, sobering as fuck, as WW1 should be  :( It's a bit of a weird documentary and maybe Jackson's more of a film director and not a documentary director. It really doesn't cover the war, but it's the story british youth experience of signing up and going to the western front conveyed through the reflective narration of a dozen different soldiers that lived through it. It's a very small scope, but also very personal and hits harder because of it. Definitely worth seeing.

From what I read there's no [or at least not very much] actual battle footage, because the size/weight of the camera equipment was too prohibitive, so they mostly just filmed "life in the trenches" stuff.

Yeah you mostly get footage of tanks moving along with shots of corpses and battlefields when they talk about actual combat.  I really liked the narrow scope of it.  It gave the documentary a drive and a lot more emotion.  I absolutely loved it.  I can't wait to buy it when it releases.

My favorite example of these is Sahara, which was going to launch Matthew McConaughey as the new Indiana Jones. It was such a disaster that there were lawsuits over it and a whole lot of bitchy emails were made public as a result.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they decided to play up the all-female main cast angle specifically because they knew the movie itself wasn't really all that good. But good luck trying to convince Peter Cetera that a work corporation might have ulterior motives.

I didn't mean it doesn't cover the war like you don't get battle footage.

I meant if you went into that movie knowing nothing about World War 1, you'd leave that movie still knowing nothing about World War 1 besides what some aspects of daily life for a soldier was. Like there's nothing about the politics behind what caused the war, the overall various forces, any of the major battles, or how the war ended. Which is fine because it gives the movie a very narrow human scope. But it's also a really short documentary and I don't think it comes across like a great expansive & interesting documentary does. It's almost more interesting for the footage itself and the tales told by the soldiers than an overall cohesive piece.

It's still a good documentary, but I just didn't think it was a great one, but the technological side was amazing, so overall it's still really worth watching.

On the other hand, I saw Glass tonight. Ohhhh boyyyyyy

Like I don't like M. Night. Sixth Sense was good, Unbreakable was actually pretty clever and great, and everything after that was barely passable leading to shitty fucking stories with a TWIST. I didn't like The Visit which was his first well reviewed movie in a while and I didn't bother watching Split because after The Visit got good reviews I didn't really trust good reviews with M. Night movies. I did get Split spoiled early on in its theater run so I just read the story summary and watched some clips and I was good.

Also with 30% RT I wasn't expecting much. But I did like that Unbreakable! They called me Mr. Glass is still a great clever line in the day before comic book movie breakout. Kinda like the more clever bits of Kick Ass where it aped superhero movies and parodied them but also was a superhero film.

Anyhow, first 30 mins of Glass...ok
Next 30-60 mins of Glass....yeah, this movie has huge pacing issues, is pointless, nothing happens, so many plots holes, this is dumb and really implausible and everyone acts like an idiot, I see why it's at 30% but eh, still ok I guess, let's see how it plays out in the end
Last 15 mins...wow......yikes.....are you fucking kidding me? Oh maaaaan. Did M.Night write this story on a toilet paper roll when he was taking a shit in 15 mins?

So yeah, uh, I'd give this movie 0/5 stars and I'm pretty sure the final 15 mins of the movie will be the worst 15 mins of any film I see in 2019. The movie was pointless, it makes almost NO LOGICAL SENSE, it has these related family characters and makes ZERO SENSE what it is doing with them, and that ending is just straight up insulting af. Like it takes the memories of what I liked about Unbreakable and just shits on them which makes me kinda angry. Like sure it's his characters, his story so he can do whatever he wants with them, but good for you M. Night, you fucked a chicken in front of everyone, who gives a fuck. You're not clever, hip or shocking, you just made a movie about nothing and thought you were clever doing it.

Pretty much just made it real easy to never bother watching another M. Night movie after this.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
For once in his fucking life, this movie didn't need a TWIST because it just made the movie stupid as fuck and nonsensible the entire movie to try to make it work and it's not even a good twist.

Essentially a shoot the shaggy dog ending, and M. Night hasn't earned that at all and he's not cool enough to pull it off.
