I'm a half-hour into The Kid Detective - this is really really good.  I'm invested in mysteries and the comedy is spot on.  Also, it was funded by Canada.

Reading up on Spontaneous reviews, I see a lot of reviewers saying the movie is a metaphor for school shootings. Which makes a lot of sense in retrospect and tonally it fits more that way. I should have realized this when the adults offer "thoughts and prayers" to the exploding kids.

That was like a 10/10 movie for me.  Got really dark.  Also, it's the same premise as Venture Bros, as in a 60's kid's comic book character becoming a middle-aged failure, but in a live-action movie which is awesome.

Speaking of school shootings, I watched The kid Detective because I was listening to Adam Brody on Comedy Bang bang plug it and he mentioned that the director of Kid Detective also did a movie that turns into a school shooting at the end.  Will watch.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dirties

Watched VICE yesterday a good watch but not everything works as well as they intended.

Rummy and Dick are portrayed perfectly.

The film is structured weird though and they left out a few things you would think are significant.
For example, the Florida recount is implied but they didn't have a scene where Stone and the bois are harassing the counters.
There's events that you don't see the outcome of and events that are missing the wider context. The Big Short was better structured.

Overall I feel like it would've worked better as a series as the film is already structured as such.

Don’t skip 3, it’s hilarious. Space is so crazy dumb, it’s got the same energy as Critters 4 which was also in space...

LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Cut 4K release

I'm so happy this is finally in 4K. This version of the film looks so good compared to the butchered Blu Ray release. :lawd

They were going to film Fury Road here in Australia too but it started raining and the landscape was too green. Thankfully there is a drought now so hopefully there are still a few bushes and shrubs around but not too many so the landscape looks like it's chronologically somewhere between Mad Max 2, where there were no living trees but still a few smaller insignificant plants that are still green, and Fury Road, where there was no living vegetation in the environment and even dead vegetation is rarely shown.

Mortal Kombat was the right amount of stupid, I went in with zero expectations and was rewarded for my time far more than the meh Godzilla vs Kong.  Sheng Tsung’s actor kept throwing me off, though, leaving me thinking in every scene he’s in that, “I bet he’s good with calculations.”

Paul Giamatti, wasted.  Uma Thurman, mild and unimpressive. Aaron Eckhardt, unrepentantly oozing evil in every scene.

I want to read the PKD book now, just to see if there’s any overlap with that nonsensical script.

I thought MK was really disappointing, and went in with no expectations also.
Just devoid of any fun, aside from the Kano guy trying his hardest to inject some life into this cosplay fest.
At least it had some decent CGi here and there, with the ice effects.
Also who the fuck was that protagonist, just gimme Liu Kang, fool.

Made me appreciate PW.Anderson's version all the more.
Was nice to see Kung Lao tho, he was my main whenever i played the games.

Mortal Kombat was...passable. Like it just baaaaaaaaarely is ok enough to not be a "bad" movie and was enjoyable, but was pretty stupid, a little slow paced for the first half and didn't have a lot of great moments. But it had good enough action, and was fun & campy and had some game references.

First Mortal Kombat was better for sure. But this is ok. Was worth the 90 mins.

Nu-Mortal Kombat was OK I guess.  Don't get adding a brand new character who basically took Johnny Cage's place.
For all the hype and trailers showing Scorpion, he's barely in the film.

Some strange omissions, too.  Mileena but no Kitana?  No Shao Khan?  Guess it was pretty 'budget' since most of it just took place in the middle of nowhere.

I agree that the original 1995 movie was better, even if it is 10 times cheesier and filled with bad CG.

The Oscars were a goddamn trainwreck. :lol Glad I watched the whole thing live so now I have context (and enjoyed YMS crew's live commentary.)

They fucking switched the schedule for Best Picture and Best Actor/Actress because they wanted to end on Chadwick Boseman winning posthumously (he was even the last "In Memoriam" headshot and got extra time), but the Academy voted for Anthony Hopkins. :lol :lol

"There were gasps in the audience." :lol :lol :lol

Anthony Hopkins doesn't give a fuck about awards and was asleep at home when he won. :lol :lol :lol :lol

Quote
“Having to be nice to people and to be charming and flirting with them…oh, come on! People go out of their way to flatter the nominating body and I think it’s kind of disgusting. That’s always been against my nature,” said Hopkins. “People groveling around and kissing the backsides of famous producers and all that. It makes me want to throw up, it really does.”

The show basically cut out 10 seconds after he won. "That's all folks!" :rofl Sadder than a wet fart.

I didn't realise Mitchells vs Machines was a Miller / Lord joint, and just assumed it was the usual kids cartoon shit netflix pad their lineup with, but yeah, I watched it and can confirm it's pretty entertaining and had a few genuine LOLs from me, even though I kind of actively hated the main protagonist? It reminded me a lot of 'when it was good' earlyish Simpsons in tone, where it had moments of genuine emotion, but managed to undercut it with a gag just before it became shmaltz and that mostly grounded in reality until its really not and nobody blinks setting.

I especially liked the "hello fellow humans" robot pair, and they mined that for some pretty good bits.

The Forest: Natalie Dormer goes looking for her missing twin sister in Japan's "Suicide Forest." This is about as good as the first Juon movie, about which I am lukewarm.  The mythology seems inconsistent, or could have used a better explanation. The Japanese people in the film seem like walk-ons in a film about their own culture. A couple neat twists. Trying to figure out why 90% of the names in the credits were eastern European.

The Invisible Man: Elisabeth Moss is fantastic. The direction and editing are a goddamned clinic in suspense and surprise. No cheap jump scares, this film shows you what it's going to do, and then does it, and it's still surprising.
