Trailer for the Spielberg/JJ Abrams movie is attached to Iron Man 2:
Quote
The trailer starts with a black screen, that says Steven Spielberg is the producer. Then a small written narrative begins that reads something like this. “In 1970 Area 51 was closed down and everything was shipped to an undisclosed location in Ohio”. Then you see a train carrying lots of cargo loads. Cut to a car driving down the road that jumps up on the tracks and heads straight toward the train. Cut to black screen and then the words “From Director J.J. Abrams”. Then back to the train and car colliding into each other, the the train derails, the camera slowly zooms in on one of the tipped over cargo cars of the derailed train, then something is punching on the walls inside the train cart trying to escape. Cut to black screen and then the title ”Super 8“.

I disagree with instant streaming selection. It's pretty solid, and there's nothing wrong with old movies. You haven't seen every movie ever, so there's always something new to see, and a lot of my favorite movies are on instant stream and are rated two to two and a half stars on average. Stuff like Mulholland Drive.

I don't mind old flicks but most of the ones on Netflix stream are crap.  Most of the stuff are not more than 3 stars and when you take into account the fact that Netflix users have lower standards, then they're not even 2 stars by normal standards. The foreign selection is particularly bad compared to the disc service.  I went through all the good European stuff in less than a month.

There's a lot to offer on instant watch, and that's without mentioning the amazing list of foreign films they've got.

There's a shit ton of foreign films on instant watch. That gives a whole slew of various genres at your finger tips, on the international level, with varying degrees of quality.

Like today I'm watching a bunch of awesome French movies like Le Femme Nikita and 400 Blows, both of which are classics. Old, but great movies, and you can't take that away from instant watch; the selection is simply amazing.

Pan's Labyrinth

I have to say I'm not impressed, and honestly, the movie was a flat out disappointment. I gave it 2/5 on netflix. I went in expecting the movie to be an Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz type story of wonder and adventure. Instead it's a canned war film slash fantasy story; the plot has no clue what it wants to be and very rarely is either plot strand interesting. Oh, so you have to do a fetch quest to open the gate to the labyrinth? What is this - a point and click adventure game? The characters are two-dimensional: raging military guy who's dead set on having a son, boring spy lady, boring kid character who's annoying...honestly, the only character I liked was the mother. The film tries too damn hard to evoke emotion and be shocking for the sake of it, attempting to tell an imaginary tale of an imaginary world, when just about every thing in the film is sterile and canned.

From a technical standpoint, it's pretty solid, but the editing drives me insane. If I had to count how many times I had to sit through a transitional shot where they close-in on the trunk of a tree and cut to another scene, I'd lose my mind.

An ultimately shallow and unfulfilling film that is the equivalent of Alice in Wonderland if Alice was stuck in the room with the talking doorknob the whole story rather than exploring Wonderland. It has no clue what it wants to be: WWII film, kid's fantasy, dark fantasy, or a civil war. These mixed  plot strands are not complimentary and help create a disconnect between the viewer and the story. To be blunt, the story is balls.

SMH

Up until Disney, kid's fantasy was dark fantasy. Kids existed in these brutal times too, escaping to a fantasy world then is fitting rather than dischordant as you found it.

But remember, guys... He gave Josie and the Pussycats a fucking 4/5.

And like I said on your facebook Himu, Pan's is one of the best movies to come out in the last decade and is pretty much solid in every aspect.  It completely knows what it wants to be and succeeds on every aspect.

I can see how maybe it just doesn't click with you, but to say it's a mess in any way is cray-cray.

I, Robot: 4 out of 5
Night at the Museum: 3 out of 5
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe: 4 out of 5

Josie and the Pussycats is a great slab of satire that gets quite meta.

It wasn't "daring" for its time but it was very, very forward thinking presenting a lot of knowing winks to things that would come to be taken for granted in the rest of pop culture.

it was a smart movie sold poorly.

Marketing fucked it.  Period.

You care too much about the sequence of events that occurs in a story.  Many great films are often more concerned with ideas than plot.  You won't really appreciate more than B level tripe unless you understand that.

Will Smith is a pretty decent actor, but the stories in his movies are stupid. What's good in Will Smith's filmography? Men in Black? Independence Day could hardly be counted as a Will Smith movie, though I like that movie. Enemy of the State? Six Degrees of Separation?

Those are the only movies with Smith in that I have liked.

Pan's Labyrinth=I, Robot
