I'm trying to remember the name of a documentary that chronicles a kid preacher whose parents force him to fake out and act like the lord is on his side for riches. It goes over the various techniques he used and how he tricked people to get their money through his "preaching". Forgot the name of it. Any clues?

Fourth and final of the adventures of Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot. It lacks the striking visuals, sometimes frenetic pace, and some of the humor of Playtime, but still has some very hilarious moments as Mr. Hulot encounters all sorts of troubles as he transports a newly-designed camping-car to an auto show in Amsterdam. It's one of those movies that you really have to be in the mood to watch and you have to enjoy movies that move at a slow pace and aren't really about anything. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it despite some stretches that moves very slowly.

i love all the hulot movies but they can drag a bit

An American In Paris- amazing physicality on display but fuck the ending.  there's no way that guy should get that girl.

Casablanca

Haven't seen this one in years, wonderful movie. My favorite of the golden age's classics, Humphrey Bogart is the man! I still think its better than Citizen Kane.
Casablanca :bow. I am more in the Citizen Kane camp though, Welles was a badass.

lol Marvel. I lost all faith in them when they hired Joss Whedon to write Captain America and write/direct The Avengers.

Bring on DC's stuff. Green Lantern looks meh but Jonah Nolan being the front runner to direct Man of Steel, Christopher Nolan directing Batman 3....:bow

I'm with ya all the way, and my interest in Man Of Steel mainly rests on the casting cause I really don't know anyone I'd choose to play Superman. And the Jonah Nolan thing is just awesome, I hope we get another set of director brothers where one is cleary the better one and makes the better movies while the other makes awesome movies here and there.
I doubt Jonah will be nearly as talented as Chris if he gets the gig but he did co-write Memento, The Prestige, & The Dark Knight.

Casablanca is as close to a perfect movie as there is. The screenplay is wonderful, and Claude Rains and Bogart playing off eachother is so great. Rains really steals the show for me in particular. And the La Marseillaise scene  :heartbeat

Wanted is a movie I forgot I watched 2 minutes after I saw it.

It seems like there are of completely forgettable but not offensive action movies this summer. Jolie had yet another in Salt which I already forgot I watched yesterday. The A-Team, The Losers...etc as well.

The Hunger, Top Gun and The Last Boy Scout were awesome, but I'm not really huge fan of Tony. Ridley on the other hand is was GOD!
There you go. Starting in the early 90s Ridley Scott's career completely fell off. Outside Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator all his movies have been middling director for hire studio fluff for the most part since then.

Early Ridley Scott is fantastic though. The Duellists, Alien, & Blade Runner are great.

Kingdom if Heaven (DC) is so brilliant, it's kinda hard to understand how he's fallen off so much. I haven't seen Robin Hood but I haven't heard a single good thing about it.

I remember hearing he was initially going to do Blood Meridian, but now another director - unfortunately not the Coens - is doing it.

Yeah, I don't really get that either. He seems like such a visionary director that he should be able to make something that isn't just a middling studio flick.

American Gangsters wasn't a BAD movie, but it really just has no impact at all. I can barely remember a single thing about it.

Yeah, that defines Ridley Scott's career for the past 20 years outside of KoH/Gladiator. Which is very confusing, it's almost like he just doesn't put the effort into his work that he used to do and just takes whatever script lands on his desk.

How does the director of Alien & Blade Runner end up directing movies like A Good Year, White Squall, & G.I. Jane?

I like the description of Black Hawk Down that calls it the beach scene from Saving Private Ryan for an entire movie.  It was enjoyable.

My favorite scene is still when they're watching The Jerk and a dude gets a seizure and everyone flips out, and then the one where a guy calls his wife only to get the answering machine, and the one where a guy is giving his death letter to his friend, and the other scenes that try really really hard to show that war is bad

and Kingdom of Heaven directors cut was great.  I liked it more than Gladiator or his other recent movies.  Then again, I haven't seen Gladiator in a long time.

Edge of Darkness

This really grabbed me and I thought it an all-round great movie - pacing, storyline, cast.  I thought the violent action parts were stupendous, they were used sparingly but had tons of impact when they happened.  Awesome characters and character interactions.
