After Zodiac's look into obsession, I'm all for another look into obsession (plus greed/privacy/etc) with Social Network. Serial killers are more interesting than facebook but I'm still excited to rent it on dvd asap.

Fincher + Craig = my pants tight. I'm hoping its a return to a Se7en-esque film.

Fincher and Sorkin together is too awesome of a pairing to pass up, regardless of the content.  Plus, Zuckerberg is one of the most interesting fucking assholes of the modern age, and I'm unfamiliar with his origins, so definitely color me curious.

I also don't think Fincher's directed a bad mainstream movie, besides Alien 3 which even he seems to hate on.

Big deal, they could get Chris Columbus to direct the sequel and it would be a huge improvement. It's not like Shyamalan's magic touch is necessary to make movie based off a Nickelodeon cartoon.

i dont see the appeal of the social network. great director yeah but the subject matter is complete devoid of anything interesting. who the hell really care about the origins of facebook. kinda disappointed he wasted his time with it. we coulda got something else in it's place.

From what I've read it's more about Zurbecker's narcissim which is quite ironic :hipster

The Social Network will be great. I have no doubt of that. I was just getting a rise out of the notion that somehow its some highbrow fare while The Town is a popcorn flick.

Both movies are on the same level, ambitions-wise. Which is better? Hard to say given that Ive only seen one of them  :lol

The Social Network seems too up its own ass.  The story of facebook is probably dull and they'll try to jazz it up with drama and shit.  It should have been a crummy TV movie like Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Benjamin Button's faults weren't in its direction–it was a beautifully visualized movie.  I blame Eric Roth for thinking he could pass off Forest Gump 2 as something under a different title.

Forbidden Planet- holds up remarkably well.  great design, clean special effects, good acting.

Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte-  I have a soft spot n my heart for Southern Gothics so I really loved this even if it was quite similar to Diabolique

tried to watch A Short Film About Killing.  Poland is jaundiced.

Now I'm watching Krush Groove.

I started Being There, which is like an exercise to see how long a film can run on a single joke told over and over again.  I'd like to continue because it's got Peter Sellers in the lead, but it's probably gonna have to be in short bursts unless something else starts happening.

Of course, I'll eat my own shit if Affleck ever does something as incredible as Zodiac, so it all evens out.
Don't get me wrong, Affleck is going nowhere. He has proved that by showing gone baby gone was not a fluke. Affleck is going to be directing solid movies when he is 70 way after his close pals like Matt Damon have long disappeared. He'll have a Clint Eastwood style career. Another guy who long outlasted his fellow 1960's action stars thanks to directing.

But he isn't Fincher.

Saw The Town; was a nice little heist flick -- well acted, decent plot, well done heist scenes.  Doesn't stray too far from the typical paint-by-numbers heist crap, but there's nothing to seriously dislike about it.  If it hadn't been such a shit year for movies so far, I'd be confused as to why anyone would call it their favorite, but that isn't such a curious thing in 2010.

I would find it amusing as hell if Affleck ended up with Oscars for screenwriting (which he already has) and directing (which he could very well land in the future if he keeps going on like this), but nothing but Razzies for acting, which is what he got in the business for in the first place  :lol

If you think otherwise you probably haven't seen a Affleck directed movie. He has the stuff to have a nice long career. He won't ever be Martin Scorsese but not ever director needs to be. He also deserves props as a writer Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone, and The Town all had his hands behind the scripts. Not just a director.

I agree with this. Thank god this fall is going to make up for the summer. So many awesome looking movies coming out. The Social Network, Black Swan, True Grit, 127 Hours, Somewhere, etc.

Just watched 500 Days of Summer again.  This is a great movie.  Fuck the haters.
I like a lot of the poser indie movies and zooey deschanel but that movie was trying too hard even for me. The overt Jean-Luc Godard references were just painfully blatant.

Good.  Everything has been done before, but it's done well and Affleck is a way better director than he is actor.  Movie keeps the tension well and is entertaining with generally good performances.  Probably won't get nominated for any awards though.

I'm confused as to why this got so much hype?  Was it just gay fever going on in 2005 or something?  I mean, it's okay, but it's not brilliant and it's quite boring at times.  Plus Heath Ledger plays a terrible cowboy.  Jesus Christ.

It's less clearly a HP ripoff in the book; sure, it's escapist young adult fiction and will share some empowerment of the hero, but it's not as much of a "oh, I'm an orphan and my step-parents are unreasonably..." Oh, wait. Maybe it is. Anyway, its primary conceit and the extension of it into magic is a bit more creatively enabled in the book.

Just watched the original Wall Street again before the sequel comes out.

It's set in 1985, but right in the beginning they reference the Challenger blowing up, which was 1986.

exactly.  there wasn't much that made me even want to try to care about the characters besides the bland, cliche "well my ma and pa died and my brothers and sisters raised me" BS.  Terrible, terrible fucking writing and progression.  That movie is on my shit list.

Eh, Brokeback is not a completely successful film however there is some seriously wrongheaded shit here.

Clearly the film's potency is found in the stagnation of the pair's intrinsically sad hiding ritual, the dissipating effigy and realization a simple memory will make up all the dilipidated pair's best decisions in life.

It's business is in chipping away at the romance; how the character deals with what is ‘incomprehensible’ to him, his ‘abstraction’, the impracticality of it all.. rather than any attempted sympathy over the character's background.

The context is Ennis’ paralysis; his rigorous self abnegation, self loathing, inarticulate longing, that cowboy persona masking a simple man who can’t face up to who he is. This is the film's anchor and also makes Jack’s transition from the loose shepard to disillusioned romantic that more effective.
Unmoved by the quiet emotional release Ennis still can barely allow in the last scenes? you must be dead.

yeah i'm sorry.  That seems like an easy way to mask shallow writing and story progression and to boot it covers the bad acting.  while that may have been the intent, it left little to no emotional impact/attachment with me.  Which in turn made me not give a shit about where the movie was going or how it went about it or in fact anything about it.  If it wasn't for two decently known male actors banging each other, I don't think it would have garnered much or any traction in the film world.

Brokeback Matrix

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/09/weve_got_details_on_the_wachow.html
Quote
Secondly, part of the film takes place in the future all right — nearly a hundred from now. But its main story is told in Cloverfield-esque flashbacks by digital archeologists sorting through “found footage” from CNN and chips from old digital cameras from the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The heroes are indeed a gay American soldier named (with little irony) "Butch" and an Iraqi soldier turned militant. Butch is endearing, young, and a ravishingly handsome Marine. Our spies tell us that he "just wants to fuck and kill everything" in Iraq — until, that is, he falls in love with the Iraqi.

The two meet while Butch is on a combat patrol in Iraq during the second Gulf War, and soon enough, the two are engaged in graphically described sex (actual line from the script: "They rut like animals behind this fence") albeit while disguised in burqas. The two soldiers’ relationship blossoms, and Butch begins to get to know his lover's family. But after he inadvertently draws attention to their ancestral home, disaster strikes. This tragedy radicalizes the pair and they become convinced that the only way to rid the world of evil is to kill the architect of the invasion, the then-president of the United States, George W. Bush. And so, during one of the president’s secret sorties to Iraq, they attempt to assassinate him.

I felt no sense of what I'm sure was supposed to be a deep emotional attachment between the two characters, which meant I couldn't empathise with their struggles.  It was about two dudes bangin'.
