the thing about Brokeback is that the two actors are not even gay! I was watching that and they were getting off with each other, I was sick to my stomach and they were so convincing that even though I was going "they are not really queer, they are not really queer" I was still repulsed because of how good they were.

My gripe with that film is that it was billed as some kind of consensual love story, despite the fact that their first encounter is almost borderline rape.

seriously.  it came out of fucking nowhere.  and before i knew it jake was bent over and heath couldn't take his pants off quick enough.  i thought there'd be some sort of ya know, character fucking development.

Regarding Inaugural ass-fuck

what was that other movie which used “character fucking development” to motivate a first quarter drunk sex episode? I mean Bildi’s consecutive ‘ew gay men can’t keep their hands off each other’ and ‘omg hot lesbians’ posts at least didn’t try to sound this outraged.

Not entirely accurate anyway as there was, beforehand, a coherent narrative strategy, however subterranean it could feel(and certainly pursued post-mountain regarding how the viewer is asked to react to items such as a ‘shirt’, a ‘postcard’ etc)where I felt characterization was trusted over scattered glances, the eye-lines, and hesitance in bonding (I particularly liked the scene where Jack is peeling ‘taters daring himself not to look over Ennis washing his balls). Sure, the animalistic lack of meet-cute is kind of fucked up, and said cinematic plotline of drunk sex doesn’t always lead to a particular bond. It remains, though, the most interesting and vital way to carnally rope in a pair who have a relationship which ‘progresses’ through years on contradictory feelings, ambiguity and importantly, the anguish of words left unsaid.

I repeat, and will probably continue to do so during this kerfuffle (at least until I inevitably hate on Inception) The gayness is merely a pretext; and Brokeback shouldn’t be condemned for wanting to examine character struggles which could emerge independent of any relationship. Ang Lee is a frosty hearted man. He’s keener on the absence of a relationship.

You would think with the focus on Ennis’s wife, why the story immediately reveals her to Jack and Ennis’ furtive game (rather than Ennis stringing her along and she eventually discovers), the less and less screen time of the pair’s private affections over the acceptance of surface lives, the film’s abruptness in dealing with a character’s death; would clue in the viewer why the film’s resonance is not limited to merely a romantic form of passion.

Maybe it's just not a movie for most people I guess because I just didn't see most scenes the way you described so I'll give you that.  but in the end, I still felt nothing.  I don't need a pure romantic angle, but I need to feel something for the characters.  I felt nothing.  It could have turned into a monster movie with aliens and I don't think I'd care.  i had no emotional investment in the movie, characters or the plot because of what I felt was an fast paced and careless progression.

I guess now I can be one of those people but here I go....

It was sold as a romantic cowboy love story by most of the film's promotions and its fans.  So when I finally watched it and it was something completely different I was a bit peeved and surprised.

Now I know how all those people who hate on Pan's Labyrinth feel.  :'(

Oh yeah, I watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid

That shit is pretty damn entertaining for a kid's movie.  but man, it has to have the most unlikable main character ever.  This kid is such a douche.  But the movie makes it a point to make you hate him.  but it's got some really funny moments.

I'm an Ang Lee fan and I still didn't like Brokeback all that much. As others have said, it fails at establishing the non-physical bond between the two characters. It paints going off to Mexico for sex as shallow and dangerous, but shows no reason why the cowboys sex arrangement isn't shallow either.

I always thought the forgotten wives plotline was way more interesting. Somehow, with less screen time, they showed more emotional change and growth.

Sam Neil sounds exactly like he does in Jurassic Park when he says "what's there to be scared about?"

And the opening scene in the padded cell where the light rolls over him was totally like the scene in Even Horizon when he's sitting in the chair and the light rolls over him and you see his eyes gone.  I hope there are more sam neil similarities to come.

yeah, In the Mouth of Madness was the shit.  I think I'm going to end up buying it.

Gattaca
I haven't seen this since I was pretty young and it didn't interest me.  I bought it a few weeks ago because it came with The Fifth Element on Amazon.  Fucking awesome movie.

Platoon
Pretty awesome movie.  The last firefight where Sheen is going batshit crazy and chasing down dinks is the shit.  That's right.  I said dinks.  I didn't find it as emotionally compelling as most Vietnam movies, but it was great.  (Side note: I just always think of the things my Dad told me about Vietnam so I tend to be easily captivated emotionally by Vietnam movies).

I saw a preview for it before Gattaca and it looked pretty sweet.  It's about the CIA and how it began.  I rented it and it should be here today or tomorrow from Blockbuster.  W00t.

I bought the BD of 3:10 to Yuma.

I dunno how well it's received 'round these parts but I really like that movie. It's only of the few movies I find easily re-watchable. Ben Foster's character is fantastic and I find it to be one of the best things Russell Crow has ever done.

I really need to get around to seeing that. I've been out of the loop movie wise for the last 5 years or so. Just been too busy with life stuff.

I'm just now getting back into watching movies so I have this huge backlog of relatively recent movies I'm trying to catch up on.

Rewatched Tim Burton's Batman for the first time in a few years. It wasn't as bad as I recall it being. I still get disturbed that Gotham's radio channels only play Prince (though I like Prince), and I am not super fond of how mixed up the whole Killing Joke origin is with the need to portray Joker as a bad guy, even originally; it undermines the entire point of the work from which they are lifting/borrowing/stealing. Keaton is still my favorite Bruce Wayne. Basinger can leave. Whenever. Immediately, even.

Wesley Snipes, Van Damme, Hiroyuki Sanada, and approxamently 10-20 Hong Kong dudes would be some desirable gets.  Considering much of the cast of The Expendables was either pushing 50 or above it, it seems hypocritical to point out that Chuck Norris is now 70 years old and as such is perhaps not quite the ass kicker he was in his prime.

I don't doubt that he is perhaps one of the most virille 70 year old men living today, but he is still a 70 year old man.  Bruce Lee would be his age today if he had never died some 37 years ago.

Oh man, I hated Ninja Assassin.  Hated it so much.  I won't ruin the parade with continuing my whining but I had to say I hated it.

I watched Batman and Batman Returns a couple of weeks ago.  I thought both were great still.  Especially Batman Returns.

W
Jesus Christ.  Way too fucking long and way too much "woe is me" and "look how stupid he is."  The interesting parts were the cuts of real footage and recreation of speeches.  And the only reason the speeches were interesting is because I can actually remember them and remember how I felt.  Fuck.  I'm getting old.  Movie sucked though.  Oliver Stone really is washed up.  I hope Wall Street 2 is good, but I'm not holding my breath.

Death at a Funeral
Funny.  Good, but not great.  Cheap, slapstick jokes with "emotional" moments where everyone learns a lesson.  Entertaining.  Will never watch again.

Yeah, if I had gone in assuming that I'd probably be okay.  But that's what I had originally expected, then I remember reviews hitting after it hit theater of people saying that it actually had good insight and wasn't just making fun of him.  ::)  Bullshit.  The entire thing was making fun of him and that's all it was.  It was like watching an SNL skit.

It's impossible to take Oliver Stone seriously, so the tone being what it is was probably for the best.  If it was a serious examination of the Bush presidency from the viewpoint of Oliver Stone, I'm sure you and almost everybody else would've hated it much, much more.

True.  I guess it just wasn't my type of movie (I hated shit like That's My Bush!).

But with reviews like this...

Quote
More character piece than the expected tragedy or parody, W. is surprisingly good fun.

A movie that's like a photo album made of moving pictures, focusing on his early, untamed life, the extraordinary turnaround and finally the first term.

I expected it to be a bit more serious.  Instead I got borderline comedy at times.  I think some people wanted it to come off a bit more serious so they could further their Bush hate agenda.

Monsters is so so so good. Great concept, very well executed. You don't get hit over the head with pointless action sequences and political nudge nudge poke poke.

The characters are great, and there's a slight tension between them, that again is well done and subdued.

There's one point in the movie where you think the main character is going to do something but then you see his true intention soon after. Again, it does it tastefully withouht treating the viewer like a moron that needs to be reminded of plot nuances. You'll see what I mean when I see it.
That's good to hear.  I'm pretty stoked.  Just another month and I'll see it in theater! :hyper
