How is someone NOT sold on Jeff Bridges by default? Especially Bridges in a Coen Brothers movie. Mauriceeeee.

Pretty awesome flick. One of Tony Scotts more interesting movies for me.

Glengerry Glen Ross

When actors get dialog to work with.

I haven't seen Glengerry Glen Ross since I was younger and didn't understand it, but it's in my queue and it seems universally praised to one extent or another.  Pretty excited.

Away We Go
Some pretty good moments and some pretty ::) moments.  For every moment that is actually insightful and interesting, there's another that's cliched and uninteresting.  Decent watch to waste some time.  That's about it.

I wanted to download it but Imma just wait until it hits theaters here.  Seems like something I should see in theaters.

Since I've been on an Oliver Stone kick, Blockbuster just shipped out JFK today.  How does it hold up to his older movies?  Seems like Post 90's Stone sucks donkey balls.  Is JFK in the good or suck category?

I love JFK. As actual real history its bullshit but as a movie I think its very entertaining. There is a scene with Joe Pesci in it that is one of my favorite scenes from any movie. I think its fascinating as a piece of propaganda filmmaking.

Oliver Stone use to be really good at that but he's fallen off pretty badly. But he still had a pretty good decently lengthy period where he put out some very good and/or interesting films.

Proclamation:

I'm tired of sitting on my ass, wishing I had someone to go to the movies with. I'm fucking going alone from now on. I love movies way too much, and considering I would like to one day work in the industry, missing out on watching films is a NO NO.

Tonight: The Town
Friday: The Social Network
Sunday: Let Me In.

Impressions on all of the films will come.

I really just don't like going to the movies by myself. For one, I feel pathetic. Two, I have the belief that films are meant to be watched with an audience. They have been produced pretty much since the beginning of the art to be watched by a large group of people. I like to be able to talk about the film with people I actually know instead of people who are distinguished mentally-challenged (past film experiences in London, KY include someone telling me that Children of Men was the worst fucking movie they've ever seen for entirely moronic reasons, when in reality it was probably the best film of the 00s)

It's not like there aren't people that I could watch movies with in my hometown either, it's mainly the fact that most of them aren't really up for going to the movies like EVERY DAY or even EVERY WEEK.

Since I broke up with my ex, I left college, and brandonh83 moved out of town (we pretty much watched a movie every week) I haven't really watched anything. The Hurt Locker has been sitting in my room from Netflix since March. My 200+ instant queue keeps growing. And I call myself a film student. I'm going to get off my ass and do something about it. Starting tonight.

It's amazing how many movies I've not watched that I've wanted to see this year. That's not going to happen anymore.

Nothing wrong with going alone.  I find it more enjoyable than most of the people I used to go with.  I used to invite people just for company but then I realized they'd bug me by not shutting the hell up or wanting to see shitty movies.  Fuck that.  Alone > Annoyed.

I don't tolerate not shutting the fuck up. I will tell you to shut the fuck up or leave if you are talking during the movie. Period.

I don't mind going to see shitty movies as much, but that is a problem as well. There are things to learn from watching complete shit as well. What does get on my nerves is when complete shit is usually chosen over my recommendation in the group. I would much rather watch a movie that's good than the latest version of Jump Scare Teens Talking Throughout The Entire Shitty Movie 2.0, but I keep ending up at the latter.

Last (and really only) time I saw a movie alone was The Dark Knight because I went in the morning to the Imax showing and I knew none of my friends would join me.  It was awesome because I didn't need to lean over and make jokes with other people as we were watching.  That's the other reason I never go see more serious movies in theaters.  And the worst is when I go with people I don't really know.  I forget what movie it was, but for the entire length of it, the girl sitting next to me would slap me on the shoulder and ask why I wasn't laughing.  If she wasn't a friend of a friend, I would have seriously considered asking her to please be quiet.  Or that time I saw Star Wars ep 3 with someone who had never seen anything star wars before; the entire time it was "what's this? what's that?"

Last time I considered it was Scott Pilgrim because the people I asked all thought it looked terrible.  I'd like to watch more movies alone but I feel weird about it.  Plus I like talking about the movie right when it ends.  That's why I generally wait for them to come out on blu-ray before watching them.

I hate people that ask why you're not laughing.  Good lord.  I usually find the oddest things funny in movies so I'm the only one laughing.  Like during Scott Pilgrim when he busts out with the final fantasy theme on bass, I was the only person in the theater (which was surprisingly full) that laughed and boy did I laugh.  And I like leaning over and making jokes every once in a while.  I hate a person who thinks that it's okay to do that throughout the entire duration of an enjoyable movie.  Fuck.

I saw The Prestige alone on a weekday matinee.  I was either the only person in there or close to it.  Literally jumped out of my seat when I figured out the twist.

Wouldn't want to see a big dumb action movie that way, though.  Saw the Edward Norton Hulk in a crowded theatre with all the appropriate crowd responses and saw The Mummy on VHS with a roommate.  The Hulk probably isn't any better objectively, but it was a way better viewing experience.

I've only been comfortable going alone to movies alone when I was new to a city and didn't know anyone - it wasn't that I was afraid someone might see me there, just seeme like the only way I could justify goin' solo to myself. Ditto with eating out alone.

Weekday matinees are somewhat of an exception though, if you find yourself with that spare time on your hands.

Finally watched the Town last night. Pretty decent movie, even if it wasn't original at ALL. My favorite part was probably
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the car chase through the narrow alleys.

Very claustrophobic feeling.

Also, LOL moment of the movie:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
When they get out still in masks with their assault rifles right in front of the cop, who just sits and stares at them while they stare back. All five viewers in the theater laughed.

Gonna go see Hatchet II alone Sunday.
I've been to concerts alone and while certainly doable, fuck that.  Maybe it's because I'm much more social in a concert setting.  In a movie setting, I generally want the person I'm with to shut the fuck up, pass the soda and hold my hand.

I'm seeing I Spit On Your Grave tonight.

I prefer going alone at late times, say around 10pm. Typically there are less teens/dumb college kids at that time. You see lots of guys dressed like they just left the office, alone too. And some couples. Everyone is quiet, few are distracting everyone with their phone etc.

Every time I've gone with a girl, she spent half the movie on her phone.

I don't think I've ever gone to a movie by myself.  Thankfully, I have a few friends with similar taste in film who are down for whatever provided the timing isn't terribly inconvenient.  And if I can't get out to see something, I know I'll get to see it later on DVD or whatever.

Concerts, on the other hand, I go to by myself almost exclusively.  Kinda difficult for me to get people to want to go out at 11pm on a Tuesday night and pay a $15 - 20 cover for a band they probably don't give a damn about, but if I don't catch it right then, I'll be waiting at least a year for the chance to do it again, possibly never again.  It's kinda like going to a bar by yourself, which can be sort of depressing if you're not feeling particularly outgoing when it comes to meeting new people.

Giallo
is the worst kind of bad movie, boring and tedious.  Dario Argento's film before this was pretty not good either, but at least Mother of Tears was batshit enough to be entertaining, if not through design then at least through accident.  This 'thriller' is just pretty much worthless, with surplus loads of bad acting, a plot that goes nowhere, and inexplicable decisions that only make the film worse.  There are bad movies that are still fun to watch just because they have a lunatic energy that manages to compensate for whatever flaws they might have.  Argento used to do that kind of film masterfully, this ain't one of them.
*1/2

Stolen, It's just like John Sayles' Lone Star, only without, you know, quality.  There's so much miscasting in this film it almost becomes a secondary attraction, "Who Doesn't Belong in This Picture", starring a still way-too-young-looking-to-be-taken-seriously James Van Der Beek as some shady dude, he wouldn't be the only one.  Only Josh Lucas seems to inhabit his role as a economically desperate father with any verve, everybody else is going through the motions of a crime story that may be based on true events, but isn't actually interesting.  This film and the previous were great insommnia cures, I'll give them that.

Why does the Facebook element matter? It looks like it's going to be an awesome character drama just like Zodiac. David Fincher should only be allowed to make non-fiction films.

I was about to say that I can barely even imagine that, but then I remembered an epically dorky party at my house once where some old friends came over and we just let Star Wars run in the background. We were busy making smartass comments, when it got to the part in Empire where Darth says, "No, Luke. I am your father..." and my wife let out a shriek. "WHHAAAAAT?!" -- which completely left us dumbfounded.

It turned out she'd only ever seen the first one. Like, once.

Probably when it came out.

oh yes.  they're still there.  and they're VERY fucking graphic.

I Spit On Your Grave
Holy shit.  I've been pretty desensitized.  Even the rape scene in Irreversible didn't do anything to me.  But this movie is insane.  It's the only movie to actually make me gag.  There is intentional and lots of unintentional humor.  Especially since the homo from Mean Girls is supposed to be some sort of threatening roughneck.  It takes its usual cues from other French remakes.  The first half is very slow, very cliche.  Except for a 20 minute rape, beating and torture scene.  Then it goes right back to slow tension building with an explosive final act.  And the last act is definitely fucking insane.  Even the parts that aren't filled with torture and insanity always feel like they're fast forward.  Great movie for the torture porn type and just to be grossed out.  Not to mention, you'll be guaranteed to be rooting for this chick.  Editing is also great.  There's tons of foreshadowing in the first half towards her weapons and methods in the second half so it gets you all giddy to see some crazy shit.

Excepting James Cameron, but that's another matter entirely.

I decided that I would go see The Social Network alone today because I have three hours free between classes.  Kill two birds with one stone and all that.  Then I found out that it starts in an hour, and runs longer than two hours  :'(

I'm so hesitant to see The Social Network. It's a Fincher film so I have to see it, but it's a fucking movie about Facebook :(

I feel roughly the same way. I really like Fincher but the idea of a movie about the founding of Facebook is a turn off to me. And Sorkin is a mixed bag for me. But I'll still eventually get around to seeing it.

I shoulda seen I Spit On Your Grave at Fantasia.
it was fun as hell, bro.  you missed out

also, the AMC theater i was at was also showing The Exorcist Director's Cut.  But they were selling tickets for it.  I almost wanted to bail out to see the exorcist on the big screen again.

edit: ah shit.  apparently it was for the blu ray release and they showed all the extras and shit.  damn.

It also highlights another question: Who in their right mind would greenlight a dying (dead?) franchise with a $250m budget with Ridley Scott at the helm?  Seriously, unless that's the budget for both films, it's ridiculous.  The PG13 is a valid complaint against Fox, but Fox being weary of the budget is totally understandable.

A $250 million, R-rated Alien prequel from Scott would be pretty awesome though. Probably.

Probably would be.  But profitable?  I'm doubtful to be honest.

Well, I think the problem with the Alien franchise post-Aliens is how far off-script its gotten. They just kept milking it and throwing out more and more contrivances and budget-directors and, small wonder, it hasn't really worked. Putting Scott back in the director's chair and giving it an actual budget might help revive its relevancy.

On the other hand, Ridley Scott of 2010 isn't the Ridley Scott of the 70's and 80's and Alien is a franchise that's long past its prime. Hard to say really.

Also, they're probably not too keen on dropping that much on another franchise reboot after the mediocre returns on Predators.

I'd say it's all of the above.  And 250 million isn't even the norm as far as blockbusters go.  and especially for directors and franchises past their prime.  Robin Hood barely broke 100 million domestic.  I think the reboot could do good and I think Ridley Scott could be the one to make it happen, but I don't think he needs 250 million to make it happen.

And to be honest, since he's asking for 250 million, it makes me think that he either has something fantastical and incredibly awesome planned out, or it's a cg-fest shit summer blockbuster that brings back nothing that was originally great about the series.  I'm more inclined to believe the latter though.

So there's a new direct to video Rob Schnieder movie out at Blockbuster, nothing at all exceptional about that.  At surface, there's nothing surprising about it all, except...

it co-stars Steve Buscemi and was co-directed by George Sluzier.  The dude made The Vanishing for fuck's sake.  I know he's not made much of note since then, but how the hell did this happen?

To be fair to Fox I wouldn't give 250 million dollars to Ridley Scott either.

Doing a double-feature tonight of Catfish and Social Network. Considered seeing Freakanomics, but I've heard it's pretty uneven. I'll probably wait until it hits the budget art-house theater.

I kind of want to spoil Catfish for myself, I really hate this aura of mystique the marketing team is forcing down my throat
