Black Swan did what Wolverine was supposed to do for him: get him a major hit that could ensure he gets bigger budgets for the shit he actually wants to do. Which is awesome in my book because all his movies are good (haven't seen 3.14)

Was alright.  It looked nice and had some neat parts, but it felt kind of standard kids movie.

in terms of global brand recognition, Godzilla is waaaaaaaaay high, and with Transformers (giant smashy things) making far too much money, its an appropriete franchise to pursue.  Also, why the hell would Legendary Pictures be producing competing giant monster films?

and since everyone hated Godzilla 98, there's considerable room for improvement.  There's nothing about this story that doesn't make sense.  That is other than the sad fact that Del Toro is probably going to have to spend too much time making a film that was compromised from whatever he wanted to make to begin with.

The only safe bet I know for damn sure is that whatever Del Toro's next film is, whatever it may be, it's unlikely to be worse then Godzilla-Broderick Edition.

Hey folks, Harry here...

On my twit-stream - MrDisgusting is reporting that LEGENDARY is twisting Guillermo Del Toro's arms to turn PACIFIC RIM into GODZILLA - and to write JAPAN totally out of the film.   This is wrong.  I know an awful lot about this project - but can not write openly about what I know, that said - this film will be international in scope.   People that claim otherwise are going off of an OCTOBER draft of the screenplay, which has changed quite a bit since then - completely unmotivated by the current disaster in JAPAN.   I've talked to a lot of folks that are working on this film and it will be a-fucking-mazing.   I reached out to a couple of sources just a while ago to run Bloody-Disgusting's story - and there was genuine disbelief.   No doubt, the rumor mill is cranking about this film, but it is moving full steam ahead!    And I couldn't be happier.   Knowing what this project is makes losing AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS at least tolerable.

Only like four seconds of footage, and it already looks like crap. I don't like the guy they got to play Conan and apparently this is the douche they got to play the mongoloid pedo king in Game of Thrones too. Is Hollywood having a shortage of big beefy dudes to take their shirts off and get greased up for the camera?  This guy makes Kevin Sorbo look like Steve Reeves.

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…

Wellington, NZ, March 21, 2011—Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand, on “The Hobbit,” filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.

“The Hobbit” is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The two films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming will take place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Martin Freeman takes the title role as Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellen returns in the role of Gandalf the Grey. The Dwarves are played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur) James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori). Reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy are Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi also join the cast as Dwarf Kings Thror and Thrain, respectively. Further casting announcements are expected.

weekend viewing, I barely survived the assault  :'(

Battle: Los Angeles
soooooooooo fucking bad. I knew it was gonna be a tacky action flick, but from the trailer I was hoping for at least some sweet ass destruction a la ID4, but even with a huge budget they still fucked that up! The whole film was from BS Marine perspective with that shaky cam bullshit. You couldn't ever figure out what was going on. I don't see why all modern action films have completely fucked editing nowadays, it's so lazy and fucking boring.

I was so pumped up about the B-52 strike all the characters were talking about, becuase maybe I would've seen some shit blow up at least. But nooooooo, the base was destroyed before the planes could take off  ::)
[close]

Season of the Witch
probably terrible, but is a strange curiosity. Basically a medievil buddy movie with Nic Cage and Ron Perlman chewing the scenery. Made virtually no sense whatsoever. Plot twist and ending was lol. Probably worth watching if you are a Nic Cage fan.

Club Dread
Yeah I dunno. Not a bad comedy I guess. Bill Paxton was hysterical as "Coconut Pete". By people called "Broken Lizard" who have made several films apparently.

Superbabies: Baby Genuises 2
My friend downloaded this, as it is currently at the bottom of the IMDB bottom 100, and has a metascore of 9/100. HOOOOLY FUCK. Film was a friggn trip. It was actually awesome, thanks to the pot we smoked. Anyone else seen this? It's gonna be a cult favourite soon no doubt.

Toxic Avenger
rewatched the first film. Fucking awesome, film can't be beat.

The budget was only $70 million, which is pretty low for a movie like that [although District 9 only cost $30 million, but I doubt any of the actors got paid much].

maybe the budget was comparatively small to other blockbuster action flicks, but it staggers me how they can still spend $70 million US and still not have decent visual effects. Interesting that you mentioned District 9, becuase the action in that was great and most importantly, coherent. It can't be that hard to storyboard a fucking action sequence (esp. if it's your fucking job!)

Hollywood is such a fucking these days. Good action films died in the late 90's. You can count all the good action films of the 00's on one hand.

Speed Racer and GI Joe are the only ones I can think of otoh

Also: Children of Men. It cost roughly the same as Battle: Los Angeles and had some absolutely amazing action scenes.

What about movies like Crank, Kill Bill 1/2, Casino Royale, Ong Bak, Rambo 4, Shaolin Soccer;etc or are you just talking about Hollywood?

I would definitely say that The Matrix (original) stands as swan song for the high budget action film as we know it.

I'd say that the action film is niche these days, though certainly not dead. Sad.

Karate Kid (remake), though not an action movie, has fantastic action choreography as well.

Jackie Chan gets a lifetime pass on whatever dodgy shit he wants to make in his old age.  I can even have empathy for a guy who maybe doesn't wanna make films where he falls three stories onto his frigging head anymore.  To be fair, old man Jackie still has some of his magic left.

Speaking of Chinese pain-dealing, Ip Man 2 is currently playing a highly limited theatrical trip through America and its damn near essential viewing.  I liked it a good deal more then the film its a sequel too, perhaps its because I got to see this in a theater rather then my TV, but I suspect its also because its on balance, a better film.  If anybody here thought Ip Man 1 was like Rocky IV (me included) then Ip Man 2 takes the formula even further into Drago territory, as the main villain ends up being a foreigner boxing champ who communicates exclusively in sneers and vicious beatdowns.  There's even a heroic/tragic "Don't throw in that towel even though I'll die" scene.

Even the acting is better in this film, Donnie Yen is nobody's idea of a great actor, but he's believably humble in this film, which for a guy who's fostered a wildly successful career based on being the most awesome guy in every film he's in, is quite amazing.  Sammo Hung has a big supporting part, and despite some occasionally wonky wire fu, makes a convincing case for his continued career in action films.  There's still the jingoistic "us against the ev-vil foreigners" storyline of the first film, but here it doesn't feel nearly as gratuitous as Ip Man 1, probably because the enemity is focused on a handful of bad guys instead of an entire nation, that's a positive change.  Its still not a great film, but as an action melodrama its superior stuff, and the best vehicle Donnie Yen has had in years.

Ip Man 2 outgrossed Iron Man 2 in China and Hong Kong.  I'd say they made the right choice.

I went on a Jackie Chan kick last year, watched a lot of his movie from the 90's. They're all kind of the same and Jackie Chan even plays pretty much the same character, but that's okay because those movies are still awesome. The best thing about them, however, are the outtakes, which show how he was horribly injured in every single movie.  :lol
