Think it's time to hand in the 'huge Nolantard' badge then, jeez

Transsiberian

The start was interesting, then it got slooow, then the second half was pretty good even if the ending was a bit out there.  It had good performances and tension, but the pacing was pretty wonky and it wasn't amazing or anything.  So I liked it, but it's definitely flawed.  Better than Section 9, worse than The Machinist.

Lemmy - Lemmy is a bad motherfucker

Source Code - Fuck you, dude,  it's a simulation.  How do you not get that?  The main character drove me crazy.

Cedar Rapids - A bit more mainstream in structure and tone than I was really expecting, but still pretty hilarious

Eh, I disagree.  There are only two scenes which I thought maybe went on a little too long and were too... artsy? I guess.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The creation of the universe scene and the end.  The first being unnecessary and the end sequence going on a bit too long
[close]

But the rest of it was fantastic.  That's growing up in the South with a military father.  That dude was my father.  So maybe I'm biased because I can relate (obviously not to all of it) to the feelings of resentment of my father for being just like that.  And the opening scene is one of the most visually awesome pieces ever set to film.  The entire film was gorgeous.

Mups, the movie really nails some things. It is shut beautifully. But so much could have been cut or done more traditionally. Now there is stuff added that is really not needed.

Whoooo!  Great to be back, great to see that this board didn't dissapear into the ether.  Now lets get down to business!

The Social Network is the modern day Citizen Kane, and just like that, its pretty damn great but maybe not my own personal choice for best thing ever.  It'll have to settle for being simply fucking awesome. ****

What's not fucking awesome, well, how's about Battle: Los Angeles, which is a dirt stupid, indesciperable piece of crap that's as flavorless as its title suggests.  I thought there might be some subtext about our own foreign wars, how the indiginous people fight off a more technologically advanced people, people that use terrifying drones and are there to collect their fuel.  But the emptyheaded hoo-rah theatrics nullify any sort of cleverness, intentional or otherwise.  What we're left with is a ugly, crappy, nuetered action movie.  At least its not too boring. *1/2

And the latest Jean Claude Van Damme/Scott Adkins film is getting a very limited and inexplicable theatrical release.  Assassination Games isn't any better then most of the direct to video films that those fine stalwarts of Redbox have been making in recent years, in fact its a step down in terms of well-executed action (Adkin's Undisputed 3, Ninja, Universal Soldier: Regeneation with Van Damme) and in B-movie crazyness that makes up for the usually restrained budget and spectacle.  Its not all the way bad, but its a definite step down from the previous highs that these dudes have been hitting in the past.  Scott Adkins gets to act with his real British accent, which is nice.  **

ok, whatever dude. not even close. i'm tired of talking about nolan. we've been through this before. i have provided several links, however, that expand on exactly why inception is so poorly directed. now, you're free to disagree with any of the points raised, but you seem to simply be ignoring them.

either way, not a discussion worth having again.

To be fair, that one link was a super-obvious troll.  The guy gives a list of movies that ostensibly deal "with memory or the unreal nature of reality", where he includes Charade and The Spanish Prisoner.  Now I thoroughly enjoyed both those movies, but mind-fucks?  They're just twisty thrillers, one in the breezy Hitchcock mode and one Mamet-style.  If those count, then so do Maverick, Sleuth, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Wild Things (PROTIP: they don't).

Likewise the ostensibly superior heist flicks.  Man, I love the Asphalt Jungle, but it's not a dedicated heist flick any more than Reservoir Dogs is about a bank robbery.

The problem with a lot of people's criticism of Inception (on-the-nose exposition, realistic dreamscapes, etc) is that they're based on preconceived notions of how a movie about dreams, or how all movies, should work.  There's no consideration of how those fit with the rest of the film, or the demands of the genre.

That's why it's weird that you cited as your favorite scene:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
When Cillian Murphy opens the safe at the hospital and finds a picture of himself as a child with his father, a photo we were shown earlier in the movie.
[close]

and IIRC you linked to a critic arguing that this was better storytelling because it relied on a visual narrative rather than dialogue, and expressed genuine emotion from a character rather than a contrived, plot-driven motivation.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Which I think is NUTS.  The scene can be read one of two ways:

1) It's sincere, in which case it's about as obvious and manipulative as your typical tearjerker or romantic comedy.  From the first time you see Murphy's character look at the picture, it's an obvious Chekhov's Gun, only with filial yearning as bullets.  I think everyone in the theater pretty much knew that was what he was going to find in the safe.

2) It's the moment when the heist is successful.

He was actively manipulated into imagining this to be true, according to a plan that was shared with the audience an hour ago.  This isn't the scene in which father and son embrace, it's the one in which the bank manager finds that the vault has been emptied of cash.

To the degree that it shows anything character-wise, it shows his need for validation, and his willingness to deceive himself in order to get that validation.  I think that makes for a more interesting character, but it also places the emotional impact of the revelation squarely behind the plot significance: they did it, and now they just need to get out.
[close]

Praising that particular scene on "show, don't tell" grounds just seems wrong.  It's trying to evaluate something based only on the first lesson of Film 101, rather than taking any of the context into account.  It's like trying to map the evolution of a species using only 2x2 Mendel squares.

It's a fun movie, but out-classed in every way by the 90's sequel.

The DVD for Drunken Master is horrible though, because the Cantonese track only plays half the time [the other half it play the English track for some reason].

Parts of the original Cantonese audio were lost, they included as much of it as they could on the DVD and then used the English dub for the parts that were missing. Even Asian releases of Drunken Master only have the Mandarin dub.

Looks like fun. I remember when this first came out; I was just a bit too old to get them, but I thought they were pretty cool. However, I didn't see even a single reference to Frank Frazetta in the birth of He-Man. Weren't his designs referenced? And both those guys who claim to be the one who "invented" He-Man seem like weak sauce. That drawing from 1954? How early was Frazetta illustrating covers for Robert E. Howard or Burroughs' books?

Yes you should.  Cronos is a great concept, though a bit uneven.  An awesome take on vampire mythology.  The Hellboys are awesome.  Blade II is eh.  Mimic is another great concept that falls into typical movie cliches.  You can see what he was going for but according to him the studio asked him to change it.  The Devil's Backbone is incredible.  He has a really short filmography but his originals are fantastic.

By the way, one of the best things about Pan's is rewatching it and noticing small things.

Del Toro's The Orphanage is my favourite thing of his and worth checking out.  I didn't really enjoy the Hellboy's so much but you may love them.  I actually didn't like Pan's Labyrinth much because I expected a fantasy movie and while there was a little of that in there (and it was very cool), it was rather a movie about an uber-violent psycho.  Damn expectations.  In any case I hate it when the explanation for what is going on is

The Devil's Backbone is very very good. Thematically it's also quite similar to Pan's.

The Orphanage is great. I went in expecting a horror film, and while it's certainly "horror" in some instances it's quite a sad film.  :'(
