OK I'm sure of it now, this movie will be good but not as good as Begins or TDK, not even close.

And he doesn't even have to watch the movie to know this!

I'm probably biased since from the beginning I've had a hard time imagining catwoman in this universe and the picture just didn't alleviate any doubts.  But to be fair, it's just a single pic and I also had some doubts about Bane before but I'm sold on it now.

assuming she's still a thief, she should, I dunno, hide her identity? I will be weird if Bruce doesn't isntantly recognize Selina as Catwoman (or the other way).  that mouf might as well be a catsignal.

1st rule of superhero movies is that if part of the face is covered it makes the entire face unidentifiable.

yeah, and part of the Nolan movies was keeping everything more grounded.  that's why it sticks out.

yup.  it doesn't seem to fit in his universe at all and I think it will be a tough sell to audiences too.  The joker had enough "joker" antics that audiences could identify him as the joker.  People don't know/care about Bane so he can get away with that.  Trying to make catwoman realistic in his universe while still trying to make her identifiable to mass audiences is going to be harder I think.

Mojo: Maybe she'll go the opposite direction and be really high pitched.

Nolan's Batman movies are grounded in reality?

...

Do we forget the main sell for the movie, is you know, a man that dresses like a bat?

Of course it looks weird, most pre-production/production materials look awful until post cleans everything up.  Only movie I've encountered that has had great production material is The Hobbit's stuff.

That's the point.  A billionaire dressing up as a bat to fight crime sounds implausible, but the Nolan movies (and quite a few Batman comics in general) try and make the concept believable.  Think about how much time is spent in Batman Begins explaining the equipment and training.  Or all the law business in The Dark Knight trying to convict criminals, with like, evidence and shit.  It's grounded in our world, unlike say, older Batman films with rocket Penguins.  Also why Batman surviving that fall in TDK stood out as implausible.

Pictures of the set aside, the media released for Bane, Catwoman and teaser are produced/complete.  It's not like a set leak or promo pictures from a toy box shoot (if you can remember the old Joker leaks).  It's more worrying that Catwoman is intended to be seen as she is in that picture.  And fwiw, I think Bane looks great.

Bane looks awesome, I don't know what the fuck people were expecting since he is dressed as a fucking luchador in the comics and the movie version is a huge upgrade imo. And like I said Catwoman looks the same as in the comics only no cleavage and no stupid cat ears.

Putting cat ears on catwoman doesn't make any sense unless Nolan goes through the history of why Catwoman identifies with cats. Now Gordon can just say, 'Female cat burglar we just call her Catwoman to be short after Batman lolz'.

Super

this is what Kick-Ass should have been. it's just so damn dark and fucked up. what i liked the most was that is was able to fit the "super hero" antics in while also building a believable motive for the main characters actions and also a sad relationship between the "super heroes". Something Kick-Ass wasn't able to do. I really did love the relationship between Crimson Bolt and Boltie. It's probably because Ellen Page is able to play a version of her nerdy Juno character with a comic book fetish thrown in that makes her funny and sad at the same time. Plus it doesn't hurt seeing her in skintight spandex :drool

really enjoyed the movie. a+

Super 8

pretty cool movie. there's some really impressive action set piece sequences in the movie that have a great mix of cg effects and practical elements. i thought the kids did a good job, especially Elle Fanning. in a sense you could really say this is the same movie as Cloverfield but not shot in the first person. the pacing of how much we see the creature is pretty much identical and the creature itself is very similar in design. there are differences in what the creature is obviously. definitely enjoyed it a bunch

Once upon a time in my teens I watched Eyes Wide Shut.  It was late at night on the hbo channel of our hotel room.  Didn't understand a single thing.  Gave it a go again yesterday.  The first trimester seems like an assault of sickenly phony social pleasantries with random spurts of deviance.  Its hard to watch but I suppose there's a point in there somewhere.  I would say its like dry rye (Xp) bun standing in the way of the real meat.  The house party is certainly a somber, chilling spectacle with an exciting sense of paranoia, and following the aftermath of that made me want to finish.  I kinda feel Kidman's character was overly dramatic.  I'm sure her behavior/dialogue were essential to justify Bill's behaviors, but I think they gave her a lousy script to work with.  Although that body is fucking perfect.  Like, everthings round but nothing sags :drool  What I wouldn't give to be that actor dry humping her.

Due Date

one of the worst films I have ever seen. Utterly pointless, two good actors wasted on one of the worst scripts ever. A script that was written by four fucking people.

Considering it was a by the numbers mismatched buddy/road movie, the lack of any sort of plot would be understanable, as these types of films rely on memorable gags and scenes (e.g. Dumb and Dumber has plenty of classic moments). This film has nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Life During Wartime

good. But not as good as Happiness, Palindromes or Storytelling. Still worth a watch if youre a fan of Todd Solondz.

Project Nim

very engaging doco. I really enjoyed it. I recommend to anyone who enjoys documentaries. Wonderfully shot and edited, and great music.

Hey hey!  Due Date has one scene that's memorable...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
him punching the kid in the stomach
[close]

So I tried watching a few comedies this weekend.  Just going through netflix bored...

Bad News Bears
I loved Bad Santa so I thought I'd give it a try.  Fucking shit.  What a boring movie.  There were a couple of scenes at the beginning that were funny as shit "I never though I'd say this, but look at that 2nd baseman's ass."  But overall it tries way too fucking hard and the writing is so terrible that in the first 10 minutes you're subjected to 5 minutes exposition from Greg Kinear explaining the plot of the entire movie.  He even goes absolutely uninterrupted with no punch lines or anything.  Just straight up lazy writing.  I turned it off about 40 minutes in

Austin Powers: Goldmember
Wow.  Did this not age well or was it always this bad?  I remember seeing it in theaters but I didn't remember anything about it.  So fucking horrible.  The first 15 minutes were some of the worst moments ever set to film.  Turned it off about halfway through

Stan Helsing
Yeah I was this bored and it was that bad.  I watched about half of it and turned it off

Mystery Team
Some funny moments but it felt way too amateur.  I'm familiar with Derrick Comedy but even their 5 minute youtube skits were uneven.  It's literally a 90 minute uneven as fuck skit

Dumb and Dumber
A fucking classic

You Again
A terribly cliched romcom that made me want to commit suicide.

Blair Witch

I love this style of movie at the moment so thought I should see the "original".  Cool movie, actually quite tense, I stopped watching the other night for fear I'd end up with nightmares, I can't remember another time I've done that.

Because I split the movie over a couple of viewings I forgot the stories at the start of the movie, and didn't realise the significance of the final scene. Which is pity because when I looked up online, I realised it was a pretty awesome idea with the final scene.

Office Space

I thought it was pretty good.  I understand it has a Ferris Bueller-level cult following, but I wasn't quite as blown away as those folks.  Still enjoyed it though.

The Uninvitied

This surprised me, I've passed it up many times thinking it'd be meh, but I really enjoyed it.  Good pace, not too long, and some sweet twists at the end.

Scott Pilgrim

I dunno, I only got half way through it.  Maybe if I would have been at all familiar with Scott Pilgrim lore prior it would have been different, but the "hey this looks like reality but here''s all this weird shit and everyone's acting like it's normal" didn't gel with me at all.  Reminded me of Kill Bill which also didn't gel with me.

Youth In Revolt

After Scott Pilgrim I thought I'd watch another Mike Cera film because I really like him.  And thankfully, this film was pretty neat.

Lake Mungo

Wow, this film was awesome.  It's a fake documentary where a girl dies and it seems her ghost is showing up in photos and stuff.  And the story just keeps getting deeper and deeper as to what was going on in the girl's life.  Only when I started watching it did I realise it's an Aussie film, and sometimes we fucking rock at making films.

kind of a control freak and he came across as a rampant egomaniac.  the person i felt the worst for was Ali Shaheed Muhammad caught between Fife and Tip.  The stories about Native Tongues and watching Tip go through some of his crates for samples used in Tribe songs was electrifying though.  Hilariously, Kanye shows up in the documentary at one of the live shows and he mugs like he's Mussolini.

Valhalla Rising

This is the not the hack-and-slash Viking epic you're looking for. Imagine if Ingmar Bergman had directed Conan the Barbarian, that's much closer to what this movie is. The dialogue and sparse and each line is treated as if it weighs a ton. The music is sparse, minimalistic, and oppresive. Many scenes are shrouded in thick, choking fog. Colors and washed out. Even scenes with green trees and grass feel strange and otherworldly. The main character is a mute. The violence is brief and brutal. Every scene is oppressive and sluggish, the tone is one of quite desperation. This is not a pulse-pounding action-adventure set to a rocking soundtrack. No, this is something else entirely and I absolutely LOVE it.

Well, perhaps "love" is a bit strong. The story is wafer thin, there's little in the way of emotion in any of the proceedings, and it often seems deliberately impenetrable. However, it pulled me into its world with its incredible cinematography and unique feel. I'm glad I watched it because it's a very nice way of cleansing the palette of all the Hollywood swill from recent years, without feeling overly indie for indie's sake.

The Tourist: Charming and largely pointless. Lots of fun, and beautiful scenery, though it looked like the rooftop chase was filmed on a poorly lit/composited set. Depp was very good. Jolie was Jolie; she seems to be getting freakier looking. It was nice seeing Timothy Dalton. I wish he had better luck in his career; he's my favorite Bond.

Minority Report: I didn't realize how noir-influenced this movie was when I saw it the first time. This is some great stuff, viewed through that lens.

I haven't seen Minority Report in ages.  I don't remember it being awful, but I don't remember much of it either.  Now I'm curious what it's like.

There are a couple of sequences in it, like when Anderton visits the Hall of Retention, and again with the "mother of PreCrime" scenes, where it's really trying too hard to be a 1940s film, right down to the delivery by the actors, which is highly affected and out of place. To a lesser degree, Colin Farrell's character also suffers from it. But if you take the movie as a tribute to the noir era, it works.

was so fucking funny.  It had the perfect mix of stuff for kids and adults IMO.

I liked how it was basically a love letter to 60's and 70's spaghetti Westerns, just everything about it was from the characters to the look was all drawn from those movies. Too many animated movies just throw out a bunch of pop culture references and consider that enough, but Rango actually pulls all the references together into a cohesive whole and make them part of the story.

I gotta watch it again sometime.

Haha, Branagh's Frankenstein was creepy as fuck for all the wrong reasons. Like Branagh getting shirtless and greased up and wrestling with the monster, and sex scene with Victor and Elizabeth where they're like "brother and sister no more, now husband and wife".  :lol
