Thank god for Nolan. I'd imagine there was a lot of pressure to make the new Batman 3D. My interest in The Hobbit has dropped significantly

THE IRON MAN PART III

I got to see a preview of The Iron Man Part III on Friday morning and I had to wait this long to write what I thought about it.  Partly because my mom was using the computer to fight with someone who kept posting pictures of lactating Asian chicks on her Etsy page’s comment thread, and also because the first two times I tried writing about Iron Man Part III all I did was type FUCK over and over again.  The second time, I bolded it.

That’s how awesome this movie is and it’s like with this and Rising Up Batman coming out in July?  Basically this summer is like if a motorcycle with Olivia Wilde’s face could give you a hand job.

First off, Iron Man isn’t even the only superhero in the movie.   There’s like five other heroes – Mr. Hammer, Soldier Man, Leather Spider, Scowly Arrow and Green Ferrigno.  And what’s really cool is that you first get to see them basically beat the shit out of each other for the first hour, and then they beat the shit out of this dude who looks like Zooey Deschanel wearing a magician costume and his army of alien penis-looking-dudes wearing armor and riding these flying space-scooters.  So it’s basically two ass-kicking movies, and anytime there isn’t ass-kicking Sam Jackson comes in and yells at people, which should happen in every movie.

Also, I hate when movie reviews say shit like, “Oh, and there’s a tension between this dude and that girl and also the plot has multi-somethings and blah blah blah”.  It’s like a scented candle is telling me what it thought of the movie.  I don’t want a scented candle telling me anything.  The only thing I want a scented candle to do is go up Justin Bieber’s butt while I shoot bottle rockets at him.

So let me just save you some time and say this movie will break your hand with its cock and balls by running at your hand which you’ve made into a fist, thinking, “I’m gonna punch this movie in its cock and balls ‘cause no fucking way can it be good” but then before you do anything the movie runs at you and breaks your hand with its cock and balls because its cock and balls are like a chunk of highway.  They can use this part of the review on the poster.

So here’s all of the cool shit you get to see:

Leather Spider’s ass with leather on it
A lot of Solider Man throwing his shield and fucking things up with it, including Mr. Hammer
The guy from The Kids Are Alright (I think it’s the same character) getting pissed off and turning into Green Ferrigno and beating the shit out of everything, including buildings and airplanes and streets and I just came
Also, Green Ferringo has a scene near the end where everyone around just went apeshit it’s so cool and also I just came again
Mr. Hammer and Iron Man III whomping the Cheetos out of each other but then becoming barely friends enough to start whomping the space-Cheetos out of the Zooey Deschanel guy and all of his penis aliens
Iron Man III doing something crazy-ass heroic at the end that you don’t see coming
Scowly Arrow being super-fucked up and kind of scary in the first part of the movie, and then getting super-angry about what happened to him in the first part of the movie and getting even scarier and scowly-er in the second half.  He also shoots a lot of arrows.
Again, the Green Ferrigno scene at the end.  I didn’t come this time writing about it.
   Oh, also: (MAJOR SPOILERS):

Stay for after the credits.  There’s two bonus scenes.

One scene is where the words, “Oh” “My”, “Fucking” and “God” come out to apologize for not being up for the job of describing how awesome this movie is.

The second scene is the actual film itself – in film cans – beating the shit out of the actual film The Lucky One, also in film cans.   It ends with The Lucky One saying, “I’m a scented candle” and then pooing itself.

Ginger Snaps II

Pretty good movie that bucks a lot of cliches.  Fairly tense, story was interesting, but holy shit at the ending.  That was really fucked up closure for the series.  Dark movie.  No interest in seeing the 3rd weird prequel one though.  1 & 2 were a nice horror romp.

Decided to watch The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo swedish version on netflix... the extended 3 hour cut.

I def think Fincher's version is superior. The Swedish version kinda feels like it's literally retelling an existing story whereas Fincher's is telling the same story... but it feels like it's own thing.

Since the extended version is 3 hours long it's able to add in a lot of the dropped plot points from the book but there are a bunch of weird changes they did make so it's got a strange feel of being pretty accurate in some places but completely inaccurate in others. Fincher's version does the same thing but the changes make sense in context of trying to fit the same story into a smaller package.

I will say that the Swedish version does a better job showing the relationship between Mikeal and Lisbeth and Noomi Rapace is a good version of that character. I would say I enjoyed Rooney Mara's take on the character though.

Lastly I'll say that the Swedish version is very aware of it's two sequels and sets a lot of things up very blatantly whereas the Fincher version is very self contained almost to a fault. If Fincher does the sequels (if they do the sequels at all) it may not really feel like they fit together.

saw Statham's latest Safe on opening day.  And its about what you would expect.  Its good but not great, has some very good fights and action scenes but they are sometimes marred by excessive shaky cam.  Statham himself remains an appealing performer who you will most likely hope will get into better starring vehicles.  This one is actually a notch above also enjoyable but not fantastic fare such as The Mechanic and about as good as Killer Elite.

some really great throat punchings here, BTW. 3.5/5

I'm currently watching Finchers one, it's beatnik beauty, shot with a stoners eye.

Spencer would SERIOULY enjoy it, as would other drug-takers and pirates.

Has a great ending.

finally watched this. Thought it was damn good. Got any more recommendations? I imagine there has to be a bunch more good horror/thrillers on Netflix.

Norwegian crime thingy, with that guy that plays in Game of Thrones. Could have been good and still was entertaining, but the script was just bad.

This is basicly sketches and freestyling with little script. Murray is good but as a whole its really a bit wonky.

I was watching The Innkeepers and someone called right during the middle of the climactic basement scene (then, fumbling in the dark, I accidentally stopped the movie instead of just pausing it, and the Blu-Ray started back over from the beginning when I continued). weird.... i just finished The Innkeepers myself.

Didn't think it lived up to the hype set forth by The House of the Devil. The characters weren't very good so the slow burn kinda fell flat for me since I didn't care about anything that was happening to them.

About to watch Absentia now.

I hate when something like that happens, especially with a movie like The Innkeepers where the payoff at the ending is basically what the movie's all about.

Edit: Innkeepers was okay, not quite as good as House of the Devil but definitely still a very enjoyable horror movie. Which means it's basically top-tier horror given the current state of the genre.

Innkeepers was great.  I loved the characters and their relationship to one another.  Bonus cameo by Lena Dunham (who was also in House of the Devil).  It was the mumblecore horror film about broke 20somethings.

Yeah I thought Innkeepers was good, but felt the payoff was a little lacking compared to House of the Devil's. I did like the characters a lot and the build up to the end was very well done, just once it gets where it's going it ends all too quickly.

Tonight I'm hoping to watch Madison County which stars a slasher wearing a pig mask (no, I'm not talking about Meryl Streep).

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher version)

Already saw the Swedish version so it's hard to say how I'd react if I hadn't.  As it is I'm feeling nonplussed or something.  It didn't really do anything for me but it's a fine movie.  Maybe didn't help that I preferred parts of the Swedish version and I had that reference for comparison.

and the product placement was funny.  Daniel Craig forced to use Sony phones for two franchises.

watched Charley Varrick, a very small scale film from Don Siegel, the director of Dirty Harry and a slew of other Clint Eastwood films of that era.  In it, Walter Matthau and his band of cohorts rob a tiny bank and find a far larger amount of money than anticipated.  Turns out it's mob money and Matthau has to find a way to out of mob hitman Joe Don Baker's ever tightening noose.

It's pretty damn good.

Currently watching Mission Impossible: Macbook Protocol.

It was ok.  Entertaining, but goofy as always.  I kind of feel sorry for Simon Pegg.  No matter what role he's in (excepting Hot Fuzz) he's playing the same character.

Martha Marcy May Marlene was pretty fucked up.  I don't know how I feel about the ending

currently watching Young Adult.  It's painful.

I thought Martha Marcy May Marlene was really good as well and got very intense towards the end...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
...but I'm still very conflicted by the ending.  I appreciate that it leaves it open,  giving it that lingering feeling of paranoia, but it almost felt like I was being blue balled. The film feels like it keeps building to a moment where everything finally collapses, yet never really does. I still liked it, but it almost feels as though nothing really changes from the moment the film begins to the end.
[close]

Madison County was just an average horror movie.  The director tries to mimic the style of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but like so many others he doesn't get what made that film work.  The pig mask killer is kind of creepy to look at, but the kills, characters, and atmosphere are bland and forgettable.

It's a pretty jumbled trailer, but all the scenes look incredible.

Like, most of the trailer sells this grim atmosphere.  And then it ends with an action montage and a corny line.

The most interesting thing to me is how much they're not showing.  For reference, The Dark Knight trailers barely touched on the second half of that movie.

Why did that guy in prison do a flip?

I think that was Catwoman.

The trailer isn't TDK-level hype-inducing but I'm really digging everything about the movie, especially the focus on Bruce/Batman's legacy, how the Bat/Cat stuff seems to be handled, the general bleakness of the whole thing (got chills at the cops charging at the inmates right in the streets.)

Bat-jet is kind of weird but so was the Bat-pod at first. Will grow on me.

Weird thing to praise, but I am soooooooo in love with the winter aesthetic of the film. Looks great.

I'm sorry I care about comicbooks

The Mexican wrestling mask is part of Bane's identity. He grew up dirt poor and in a crappy mudhole, yet bettered himself. This Bane's accent reeks of highly educated, prep school melodrama (Bane was smart make no mistake but self made) that is at odds with whom he is. He should be a hard luck case Latino that crawled up from the sewers and jail, guilty from birth yet strong enough to rise above it all and empowered himself to be one of the greatest strategic minds. Here is a guy that knifed a dude in jail with a shank hidden in a teddy bear when he was a kid. He fought for his life everyday growing up. He meticulously trains his mind and body not wanting to fall back into that despair and fear. He pits himself against Batman just to see if he has what it takes and makes it his mission in life to best him, his purpose is to validate himself over the Bat's broken body. From what I have seen this Bane pisses all over that legacy.

It's not the Bane I want to see. Yes I get pissed off at comic book (DC especially) movies as much as I do hollywood anime movies. If you all like it, go ahead and like it, leave me to stir my hate pot though  :-*

Thrown in jail from childhood, fearing for his life daily until he finally stabs some fucker with his teddy knife.  From there decides to train his body and mind to never be as weak as he was again. Forced into an experiment because everyone hated him and when they thought he died from venom they threw his carcass out. Stop me where I'm wrong?

Also yes the Euro accent is a part of why I dislike him.

In his latter years when he helps Batman and that shit storyline where he looks for his dad, sure. The Bane that broke the bat, nope.
