The Divide - I thought this was actually really cool, dark, character drama/thriller from the director of Frontier(s). It kind of plays out like one of those stories you would read when hunting through abandoned vaults in Fallout 3. Basically the story takes place during a nuclear fallout in New York where a group of survivors hold up in their superintendent's bomb shelter (the super being played by Michael Biehn). As time passes some of the group began suffering from radioactive poisoning and things begin to slip into madness. I could easily see this film not being for everyone as it get into some really dark and uncomfortable territory towards the end with barely any moments of levity, but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the way to the very end. Definitely worth a watch if you're into small scale character dramas where everything slowly descends into chaos.

Why do i get the feeling that Nolan's pretention is gonna get the better of him in this one.

Better than him going "IDGAF" and pulling a Spider-man 3.

I read somewhere that Batman quotes Heidegger in the movie (seriously).  So yea I would say that is a distinct possibility.

I'm watching a film with Denzel Washington (he never changed his name) and some guy who would actually be really good-looking if his eyes weren't so close together. I'm pretty sure that's one of the only things the Hollywood surgeons haven't cracked yet. How do you move eyes.

Moonrise Kingdom

A Wes Anderson movie. You already know what you think about it. This one seems less quirky then his others and has a more focused plot, but remains highly stylized. His movies always leave a smile on my face and this one was no different.

ah man, I sure dug Headhunters.  Which is as polished as any Hollywood thriller, but as pleasingly amoral as a European one.  An ultra-slick corporate stooge moonlights as an art thief of clients he headhunts, until he bites off waaaaay more then he can chew with his latest target, a former CEO/'person with a particular set of skills' who provides an irresistible professional/criminal opportunity.

Headhunters isn't just great because its an effective thriller, its great because its so damn entertaining, with lots of well executed pitch black humor, and a slippery, satisfyingly callous protagonist who's a lot of fun to watch squirm and worm his way out of his increasingly bleaker situation.

And its also great because between all the well staged nastiness it finds time to make its characters feel like more then the archetypes they initially appear to be.  Hell, there's some simple, spare dialog about the protagonists marriage that feels more truthful in three sentences then whole movies about relationship dramas.

when I make my top 10 list of this year, I'm pretty sure that Headhunters will find a spot on there, probably on the top half of the list.  It really is pretty damn great.

yes it was kinda ridiculous, which I enjoyed, and I'm pretty sure it was intentional.  I mean, how can you not love the part where...

the protagonist is saved by being sandwiched between two really fat guys in the squad car.

and actually, I don't think anything really came out of the blue.  Everything except the...

Men in Black 3

Fun popcorn movie.  Was surprised when the reviews said it didn't suck, because man this had so much potential to be awful.  But it's solid across the board.  Story works, directing is fine, and Brolin does a great job.  Not going to win any awards, but if you enjoyed the old ones (or one), it's worth a matinee.

Mission Impossible 4

Alright movie.  I mostly enjoyed all the Mission Impossible movies for different reasons, but MI4 is probably down with MI2 as a movie full of vapid action.  Although MI2 was too serious and MI4 stays fun and has some nice interactions between the crew.  Sometimes it's too cartoonish with looney tunes impacts (with 'boink' sounds and all).  Plot and the bad guy (pretty sure it was the guy from the original girl with the dragon tattoo) were bad and barely present.  Also really, really gadget heavy.  The other movies had gadgets and stuff.  This one has post-Goldeneye Brosnan amount of gadgets.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
And as a joke almost every gadget in the movie breaks down.

Also, really heavy handed Apple product placement.  But overall an entertaining movie!

I really enjoyed MI4. It wasn't deep or full of great characters or anything like that, but the action was well-handled and it moved at a good pace so that it never really felt boring.

Ghost Rider 2

I don't know why this got panned so hard in the theater.  For a comic book movie, it seemed pretty decent.  Better than the first one for sure.  Idris Elba was was fantastic and Cage actually does a good job being a crazy person, showing the insanity/internal conflict that the rider curse is to the character.  While it was no Crank, the directing was kinetic enough that it stayed entertaining for its 90 min length.  The story was standard fare comic book stuff and it had a bunch of ridiculous action scenes.  I liked the comic book scenes that went into the lore of Ghost Rider universe.  Eh, I think GR is one of the more interesting Marvel characters, so this was a decent watch.

Corman's World.  Film was too short and didn't really give any new information.  Though it was somewhat touching to see Jack Nicholson break down and start to cry when he was discussing how much Corman meant to him.

This was my Memorial Day movie as well, and I agree with your points. Ruffalo is a good Bruce Banner, and The Avengers made me /want/ to see Captain America.

The always-ironic Marvel Team-Up sequences of "we are superheroes, but we must fight before we team up" just went on and on, and then it was all about the SHIELD Helicarrier not crashing... making the Helicarrier just seem like a really bad idea, rather than a strategic platform.

...AAaaaand Joss Whedon made me care about a character before impaling him through the torso, so you can see he's either mocking himself or has a very limited bag of tricks.

Even with all that, I still really enjoyed it. I laughed a lot, too.

TDKR the hours long?  I'm not sure thatll actually happen for the theatrical cut, but still, gross.  A movie like that has no need to be three hours, not even two, really.  I'm guessing it'll be around two hours and twenty minutes.  Nolan better not have Batman holding Alfred's skull in some lamenting monologue.

I think all of the Corman Poe films are.  Check out Tomb of Ligeia if you haven't seen it yet as it's the strongest of that sequence.

Last night I watched Jackie Chan's Crime Story.  I haven't seen it in a long time so I forgot how grim the whole film is.  Really more of a straight up action film than the usual Jackie Chan comedy / action stuff.  Still can't believe they were able to blow up parts of Kowloon though.  Really good stuff though.  Really liked the opening shoot out cut back and forth with the police psychiatrist.  It starts about 3 minutes in if anyone wants to watch it.
