I forgot to mention I saw this last week. So much potential, so many beautiful shots...but my god the plot and writing fail. I've never seen a movie with characters who act so dumb to advance the plot. And the end is basically a cock tease for a sequel. Bleh, I'll pass. It's not some horrible movie, there are some good moments. But Fassbender and Elba are really the only noteworthy cast members/characters, as everyone else is completely forgettable and stupid.

This is basically a bad sci fi adaption of Jurassic Park btw. The music sounds very similar, and more than a few scenes remind me of it. That hologram scene where Guy Pierce explains the goal/objective reminded me of the Mr. DNA scene in Jurassic Park  :lol
From the amount of things rumored to be cut, I totally understand why this movie turned out to be such a non event. The DC should be good though.

I still enjoyed the movie as a modern sci fi flick but I think a DC could put it in awesome wowsome territory.

I watched the the first four  Resident Evil movies yesterday.  All in a row.  Man, I was pleasantly surprised.  In high school I loved the first movie, but when the second movie came out I didn't give a shit anymore and it was underwhelming so I didn't bother with 3 or 4 (although I realized I had seen bits and pieces from each).  But this is the definition of disposable action for me.  It's so cheesy and awesome. I loved it.  And I'd never seen the trailer for Retribution but now I'm excited to catch a matinee next weekend.

20 minutes of extra footage and 30 minutes of deleted scenes will be in the home release, according to Ridley Scott.

Saw Bourne Legacy cause my buddy had free passes. Never seen a Bourne movie before, but I had no problem figuring out what was going on. The movie climaxes in a chase scene that has to be one of the most heinous displays of shaky cam bullshit I've ever seen. It's a ten minute incomprehensible clusterfuck. I had heard Bourne was one of the major players in the popularization of shaky cam action, which is why I'd done much to avoid the previous movies. Seems like a good choice. Fucking worst directorial trend in movie history.

You should see the former trilogy. It really is a fantastic set of movies. I haven't watched the new one but its supposed to pale in comparison.

I guess I shouldn't doubt Scott in terms of DC/deleted scenes but jesus this is getting old. It makes me want to simply not watch any of his shit until the DC comes out, and even then you're kind of flipping a coin. Kingdom of Heaven's DC worked whereas American Gangster's wasn't all that, or Gladiator's tbh.

It sucks that every big director has decided that "epic film" can only be achieved today with a $150-200mil budget, therefore guaranteeing studio demanded compromises (unless you're Nolan or Cameron). Most of these guys made far more epic films with far smaller budgets in the 80s and 90s. Why waste your budget securing big casts or going crazy with CGI - which wasn't particularly impressive in Prometheus to me. I'd rather see prosthetic and physical model effects advanced instead of the same cgi in every big movie.

Resident Evil Damnation : Well was a fun action film, no idea wtf was going on with the plot though.

@GR Is that 50 mins of footage actually part of the movie or just put on the disc as leftovers? I want a real directors cut with the film as intended by Scott.

Some of it will be accessed through the menu, but Scott said that the home release might be as much as 20 minutes longer than what was in theaters.

I wish at this time to endorse the opinion of BT and confirm that Dredd is indeed pretty damned great.  Good, non-obnoxious 3D too.

Basically, its like somebody timewarped late 80's John Carpenter (the second best John Carpenter) into today's film market and gave him medium sized budget.   So yeah, its good.

Finally saw The Master. Great, great movie. Joaquin Phoenix and PSH were absolutely fantastic (and the movie wouldn't have worked otherwise since it's mostly focused on their relationship). There is a scene between the two of them early on that is one of the most gripping and intense things I've seen in a while. I also really liked the scientology/cult aspect - meetings, the "conditioning", PSH's speeches and the parts of his writing that we heard, I found it all compelling and enjoyed the look into their society. I have no idea where it'll end up in the grand scheme of PTA films but I definitely found it a worthy addition to his excellent filmography.

I am watching Bed Sitting Room which is a film that is apparently fondly remembered by people who haven't actually had to sit through it since the 60s.  It is god awful.  A bunch of English stereotypes living in post apocalyptic England trying to keep their lives going as best they can.  It's a comedy.  without any actual humor.  Sadly.

Quote
The film is set in London on the third or fourth anniversary of a nuclear war which lasted two minutes and twenty-eight seconds, including signing the peace treaty. Three (or possibly four) years after the nuclear holocaust, the survivors wander amidst the debris. Penelope is 17 months pregnant and lives with her lover, Alan, and her parents in a tube train on the (still functioning) Circle Line.

Other survivors include Captain Bules Martin, who holds a "Defeat of England" medal, as he was unable to save Buckingham Palace from disintegration during the war. Lord Fortnum (Richardson) is fearful that he will mutate into the "bed sitting room" of the title. Mate is a fireguard, except that there is nothing left to burn. Shelter Man is a Regional Seat of Government who survived the war in a fallout shelter and spends his days looking at old films (without a projector) and reminiscing about the time he shot his wife and his mother as they pleaded with him to let them in his shelter. Similarly, the "National Health Service" is the name of a male nurse, although overwhelmed by the extent of the war. Finally, there are two policemen, who hover overhead in the shell of a Morris Minor Panda car that has been made into a makeshift balloon, and shout "keep moving" at any survivors they see to offset the 'danger' of them becoming a 'target' in the unlikely event of another outbreak of hostilities.

Lord Fortnum travels to 29 Cul de Sac Place and actually does become a bed sitting room. Penelope's mother is provided with a death certificate, after which she turns into a wardrobe. Penelope is forced to marry Martin because of his "bright future", despite her love for Alan. Her father is initially selected to become Prime Minister due to "his inseam measurements," but unfortunately, he mutates into a parrot and is eaten due to the starvation conditions that prevail.

Penelope finally gives birth, but her monstrous mutant progeny dies. It emerges that Martin is impotent, so he yields marriage consummation to Alan. Penelope has a second child, which is normal, and there is an indication of hope for the future of the country amidst the devastation when it transpires that a team of surgeons have developed a cure for the mutations involving full-body transplant. Finally, a military band pays homage to Mrs. Ethel Shroake of 393A High Street, Leytonstone, the late Queen's former charwoman, and closest in succession to the throne.

why?  because drugs.

Watched The Last Exorcism on Netflix this morning, because you know, Sunday. There's nothing here you haven't already seen, but it does that really well. It's about a self-confessed fraudulent preacher who is making a documentary to expose all the tricks fake exorcists use. He gets a letter from a rural Louisiana farmer begging him to come "cure" his daughter, and takes his two-man crew there to film his exposé. Given the scads of similar films, a movie like this really hinges on the acting, and the entire cast is very good, particularly Patrick Fabian as main character Reverend Cotton Marcus. He's the right blend of cocky-charming and sincere, fun to watch when he turns on his preacher act. It's filmed like a straight doc, only falling into shaky-cam "found footage" towards the very end. Gets kinda gimmicky (and a bit silly) in the last 10 minutes or so, but it's pretty crackerjack up until then. B+

Dredd freaking rocked. Much better than I was anticipating. It's definitely got an old school, bloody, gritty 80's vibe to it, even down to the score which had a very Carpenter sound.  The slo-mo scenes weren't overdone but when they're used it was very effective.

My only little gripe

spoiler (click to show/hide)
was that the team of Judges that showed up at the end felt a little underused.

But yeah, there's definitely a lot of comparisons that can be made to The Raid and not just the setting. Shame that this had to come out after it.

Saw these on Netflix as I was randomly scrolling through lists:

Anvil!  The Story of Anvil - I thought this was a pretty good documentary.  It is about 50 year old men still playing in a heavy metal band against the odds.  Their story is pretty sympathetic as it appears that they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.  From incompetent managers to poorly promoted events to band members being homeless, their story becomes too sad to be pathetic, even having to borrow money from family to fund production of a new album.  On the upside, since they're Canadian, you hear quite a few "aboots," which are hilarious to hear when you come across them.  From what I understand, they got a little boost in popularity from this documentary.  I'd recommend this even if you're not a fan of metal or rock at all.

Coming to America - I saw bits and pieces of the edited version.  The upside is that you get to see titties almost right away, which I never saw of course on the edited versions.  I thought this movie was decent and got a few laughs out of me.  Worth watching (again) on a boring Sunday afternoon.

Wanderlust was great! In a lot of ways it felt like the perfect balance of the humor of Wet Hot American Summer and the marketability and accessibility of something like Role Models. The writing was on point and it was loaded with excellent references to The State.

Re-watching Iron Man 2, having only seen it on an airplane. Oddly, I liked it more on the airplane showing; it's not very well-paced and the characters are annoying cartoons compared to the first movie.

I called a movie night at work. Three 50" screens running Ronin on Blu-Ray, with pizza and a keg of Sierra Nevada. WHAT A FUCK-AWESOME NIGHT.
