to me Magnolia is the only one that feels "full of itself" or overtly self-conscious. and even then not drastically, the performances are great enough to keep it buoyant through a singalong and frog rain (save maybe Julianne Moore who gets p. cringe worthy). Manabyte may be right about an inflated ego after Boogie Nights, PTA seemed pretty high in the production videos for Magnolia but I feel that for it to allow this new minimal and studied style is justification enough of it's existence.
i am still super excited to see The Master and surprised to see a negative reaction here. i've largely avoided the critical reception and had just assumed it was superlative.

The Master

So it was good and I found the concept intriguing, but my God, I really miss the old PTA who made Altman-esque ensemble films.

I think you're at this breaking point because The Master wasn't good. Punch Drunk and There Will Be Blood was great.

I felt the same way.

wait, which way

The Master isn't very good, but it is gorgeous.  Prometheus is a really dumb movie.  Under Siege 2 is better than both of them.

Yeah, The Master was fanwankery.

Just saw Argo tonight and it was totally great.  Love Affleck's range between GBG, The Town and Argo.

Bootleg of the new Evil Dead trailer here:

http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=26405

Big fan of the trilogy, especially the first one. I was worried as hell for this one but this trailer has got me fuck all excited. So many of those shots just hit home and glad the gore appears to be all nice n' splattery and non CG. Can't wait to take another twisted trip to that old cabin again.

I just don't see it... I love the evildead movies and I don't get this remake at all. I see the same story elements but the tone and visuals are just off. It looks more like a torture porn film than a evildead movie. There looks to be no comedy or campiness that the original was oozing with.

Thankfully neither Marucs Nispel nor any on the Platinum Dunes or Saw guys are behind this. Seems like Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell have been very picky about how they wanted to handle this new one. I'm kinda glad Raimi and company is letting a first time director helm this. From what I've read in interviews he seems like he gets what made the original Evil Dead. So I'll give him a shot. The restraint of CGI in the trailer is a good sign.

As for the look, other than some tinted shots in the bathroom or cellar it looks like Evil Dead to me, only with more of a budget and better film stock.  Unlike Platinum Dunes' soulless remakes, here it looks like they're keeping the same setting (the cabin and the woods look very to the first film), and still has the basic concept of the book of the dead and tormenting demons intact. From what I've been reading, the humor is closer to the more serious first film in that it comes from a series a fucked up moments.

It could very well suck, who knows, but this looks more promising to me than the countless shitty horror remakes that have been coming out the past decade.

Here's a link to the NYCC panel where Campbell, Levy, and the director, Alvarez, discuss the new Evil Dead:

Yeah, I don't really see it either. Just looks like another generic gore movie, but maybe they just decided not to show any of the campiness.

recent viewing

Small Soliders - I never realised this film was by Joe Dante. Pretty good but not as good as Gremlins 2 and Loony Tunes Back In Action.

Goofy Movie - pretty fucking intense, Disney's sexualisation of female anthropomorphic animals is pretty weird. Good songs though!

Aguirre: Wrath of God - total boss level masterpiece. Beautiful and amazing

That movie was very polarizing for me. I thought some of it was absolutely brilliant while others were just trying too hard in ways. Dude's definitely a good director though, he just needs goof direction.

I'm of two minds about it, myself. As a surreal audio/visual experience, I found it to be very compelling. I had originally intended only to watch part of it last night, but instead I ended up watching the whole thing. As a movie, however, it's maddeningly vague and dreamlike, ultimately never developing the themes and ideas hinted at early on.

WTF!  How is this getting more positive-than-not reviews at RT?  It was pretty damn weak for a horror film.  Not scary, felt like 3 hours in 100 mins, had lots of plot points that went nowhere, and in the end you're like "why did I bother watching this".  Plus points for Ethan Hawke because Ethan Hawke is the man, but otherwise it was a let down of a film from a horror watcher like myself.  Can't really recommend at all.

the Lost writer wasn't given the chance to fully work his magic into the Prometheus script.  Recently there's been more about the original script and it sounds like his greatest contribution was

replacing all the direct Alien references with black goo.  It's why black goo is as versatile as oxyclean.

In the original script, the David attaches a facehugger to Dodson, and later when Dodson is sleeping with Shawna, it bursts out of him during.  That's also how Shawna knew what would happen to her and went for a c-section.

excision means "to cut away"
at 120 minutes it's still too long by about 30 minutes
as this started off as a short film that's been expanded to "feature length" and even then it's way too repetitive

Some Guy Who Kills People - Not.....horrible which I guess is the new good for indie horror comedies.  This is a bit quirky and a bit too sun shiny in production staging for my tastes and it's more like a "little miss sunshine meets revenge slasher" than anything else.  It has some pretty good performances by the bit players and people really do give it their all but it's not a great film.  I wish I could recall where I read the recommendation for this to see what they saw in it.

I'm really 0 for 3 with horror films right now and it's kind of killing me.

I watched this over the weekend.  I'm a sucker for intense, minimalist visual aesthetic (owing a lot to Solaris in this case, among others) and the sort of atmospheric dread that this flick trades on, though I think it would've been beneficial to let up now and again as it starts to become a monotonous slog after an hour or so.

Saw this a couple of weeks back too. I thought visually and aurally the film nails what it was trying to do. The last 40 minutes or so was a feast of 80s retro scifi weirdness.

I do think the film suffers from an incredibly slow moving first 1/3rd where the plot moves at snail's pace. I can normally stomach slower paced moves, but other than establishing the setting and story the plot barely moves forward. They could easily have shaved off about 20 - 30 minutes of the first 50 minutes without losing anything. Other than that it's still an interesting watch for sure.

Rewatched PROMETHEUS. I didn't hate it nearly as much as I did in the theater. There is still a mess of stuff which doesn't make a lick of sense, but it was less overt than I recalled it being.

Someone said the trinity of pilots went cruciform before sacrificing themselves. They don't. They just raise their arms, though it doesn't make much sense. "Banzai!" I guess.

Additional footage of the Engineer stalking through the lifeboat was more reminiscent of the ending sequence in Alien, on board the Narcissus. Very evocative of Ripley's final escape.

Still want to know how the geologist managed to be entirely lost despite all his mapping goods. Still want to know why the biologist thought the cobra-like pose of the albino alien snake was an approachable body language. Still want some resolution about "Every King has his reign, and then he dies..." but the Engineers are not interested in passing on their reign either, much like Weyland.

Also, look up The Raid: Redemption, if you haven't seen it already.

Grave Encounters, although made in that quaint little country Canada is well worth a watch, it's better than VHS. Also Abraham Lincoln VH is not really horror, but is a fuck ton better than it deserves to be.
