It looks like its definitely going to be something made by Zack Snyder. Personally I love his visuals, he's like a lowbrow version of that guy who directed The Fall and The Cell.

Star Trek was a totally nice summer movie.  Maybe it's lame to praise a movie for pacing, but after all this Nolan/Snyder/Verbinski/Lucas/Jackson stuff (some of which I liked very much) it's nice to have a well-executed action flick that zips along without ever dragging or feeling aimless.

Hangover 3

Didn't really want to see it, but was heavily outvoted by my friends.

It was an alright ending to these movies, but never had a shot at being as good as the 1st. More coherent than the 2nd, but extremely predictable. None of the dialog was very funny and all of the best parts were in the previews. Probably "better" than 2, but 2 was at least funny in some parts.

It has the same vibe as that Jonny Depp campire one he also did, and that also has a seriously horror vibe ending.

Holy shit! A seriously cool werewolf scene, I personally think that Burton and Raimi have a rivalry.

I liked Oz the Great & Powerful but

At the end when Glenda told him he was good and the obvious look of disappointment on his face. I think it was odd to end it on that note with them. Really was expecting another scene to follow up on it.

I thought Oz The great etc was a massive disappointment, the beginning bit was probably the best part.

VHS 2 is out next week I think. The Gareth Evans section sounds amazing.

The Dying Rooms (1995)

A documentary about China's state-run orphanages and how the babies (always girls or the disabled) are often left to die from neglect in specific rooms/buildings simply due to lack of staff/funds. It's about 40 minutes long and available on YouTube but it is very hard to watch as it includes footage of babies/toddlers dying of thirst while tied to chairs and benches. It does include a short bit about the private orphanages supported by charitable donations and those kids seemed to be very well-taken care of.

Part 1of 4:

Recent stuff

Star Trek-It's pretty, the characters are if not simple exaggerations, and some of the action is cool. The plot is dumb and has almost the same character arcs from the last movie. Khan was pretty pointless ,but effectively menacing. It was just kind of ok.

Oblivion-I like the little plot point that basically the world was invaded by Tom Cruise Death Squads, but I don't know. Obviously, the movie is visually cool, but I say that because it tires really hard, but yet in the end the movie looked kind of boring. Kind of a cool twist, but I don't know, I just did't feel anything. It's like the movie wanted to be this smart thinking sci-fi movie without the thinking.

Fast and Furious 6-Just stupid fun. The cast is great. The action is great. It's just a well made action movie that really knows how to use it's cast.

Pain and Gain-I don't know what to feel. It's like a bro black comedy without all the subtle darkness from a black comedy. Look at all these terrible things that these dumb bros are doing! That's the movie. I mean the Rock is as entertaining as ever and it's not a boring movie, but it's not good thats for sure.

I just watched Confessions, that Japanese one from a few years back. It was alright, but soundtrack was a little jarring (Western rock/pop songs that weren't always suited to the scenes they were used for) and the ending was waaaay overcooked. The opening half hour is brilliant though.

The ABCs of Death

Ummm

........................................

Yeaaaaaah

26 short films by 26 directors.  Maybe 1/3rd have legitamite value and even then it's mostly cinematography/visual value as in terms of interesting horror stories there's maybe like 2 out of 26.  There's some creative stuff, 2d animation, claymation, 4th wall breaking, lots of twilight zone stuff.  The couple of serious torture porn pieces feel totally out of place with how silly the set is as a whole (though the Libido one is pretty well done for the fucked up thing it is).  Apparently the main takeaway is that Japanese horror directors are fucking insane.  The last piece especially was just WTF; though I like the Jidai-geki one, it's sort of works.  The Nuptials one was probably my favorite with Dogfight & Orgasm having GREAT GREAT GREAT cinematography.  Gravity gets an award kinda for leaving the most to imagination.  uhhh, yeah there was a lot of shitty ones in this and I'm pretty forgiving about horror.  The Japanese FARTING combined with the last Japanese one...smh :\

If someone did a recut of this with only the ones of some value it'd be worth a watch for horror/twilight zone lovers and would only be an hour long.  At two hours with all the stuff in there it's definitely a tough recommendation.  I think what it actually does the most is make me want to make my own 4 min horror film because I'm pretty sure I could do better than some of these.  So gj film for the creative boost.  Will start on the script tomorrow.

Also between VHS and here, it's kind of strange but I don't like Ti West's shorts at all even though I am a huge fan of all his feature films.  Ti West's strengths are building and keeping tension and creating creepy creepy atmosphere through it.  In like 5 mins he can't do that so his stuff kind of sucks.  Although the VHS one wasn't 'bad' and did a good job at creating tense atmosphere for the 15 mins, but it definitely needed more time and comes off as a half-finished concept.

Super cheesy, but good ole fun. Every scene just goes a bit over the top to be a serious movie.

Sean Penn is good in this.

I remember when Superman Returns came out and there was all this talk about how we could FINALLY do a Superman movie right due to technical advances, CG, etc. And instead we got 4 minutes of Superman carrying a space shuttle around and an hour and a half of bad real estate schemes
