So, VHS2

Overall? Better than the first. Very entertaining.

Per segment thoughts:

First: thought it was awful. really dumb premise and clumsy execution.

Second: Great! Really fun premise with great execution! It's one of those things where you think, "how hasnt anyone thought of this yet?"

Third: OH BOY. The absolute best of the bunch.

Fourth: Another well executed premise. Good sound design and usage of lighting. Effective.

So yeah, two fairly good segments and one fucking awesome segment. Pretty fun to watch and worth the time.

Errr I wanna get a little spoilery regarding the movie now:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
First: The cyborg eye camera gimmick? Come on. And then they try to tie it with "seeing ghosts"? What a weak fucking premise. It's completely half-baked and executed terribly. The chick shows up and is almost immediately killed. This is the kind of story meant for a longer story to flesh things out. Or not at all because it's a dumb story.

Second: This started really bad. The dialogue between the dude and hid gf made me cringe a ton. Then I had to watch this dude with a go-pro strapped to his head go biking? what? Then shit started to happen and i didnt immediately realize what was going on. Then i was a little let down because "zombies? really?" then the dude gets bite...then i realized why the camera on his head was relevant. from there it's great. i don't think i've ever seen a zombie story from the perspective of a legit zombie. awesome stuff

Third: THIS ONE JUST fuckin GOES FOR IT. It starts out simple, a docu crew wants to film at a weird religious convent. You know something is up but you think "oh they're just gonna like... kill them, right?" then they bring up some bullshit about a dudes gf being preggers and is cheating on him, whatevs. THEN SHIT GOES DOWN. We got mass suicide, occultist carvings, an almost nude asian dude running around humming songs, then suddenly something explodes... THEN FUCKING SATAN CLIMBS OUT OF A FEMALE ON A TABLE and it's an awesomely cheesey dude in a goat helmet. it's stomping around chasing someone and then CREEPY ASIAN ZOMBIES OR SOMETHING. my god. it's literal escalation every minute. i couldnt believe it. so great.

Fourth: We round it all out with a kid and his friends playing pranks on his sister. THEN ALIENS INVADE EARTH. I dont feel like typing anymore but I really liked the way this was portrayed.

They made a VHS sequel?  My friends did the "Amateur Night" segment for the original.  I can go ahead and tell you that the reason the second looks better than the first is that the second one had a shitty budget, and the first had NO budget.

$190 million budget. About $75 million in the US over the first four days. Fast 6 and Hangover are a lock for the top two box office slots next weekend.

$84 million through Sunday.

$70 million three day. And $84 million is still less than the first one made in three days. It's a bomb, and dead next weekend when the movie of the summer releases.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2013&wknd=20&p=.htm

As of today, both Star Trek movies have grossed roughly the same in total overseas numbers and Star Trek Into Darkness is above $200 million [and still roughly in line with the charting of the first].

It's far from a bust, although we don't know what the marketing budget was. Pretty impressive haul despite massive competition and very little "buzz"

I will say this: I doubt the next Star Trek movie will have a 190m budget

Really? That was my favorite segment. Really good imagery. Specifically with the usage of silhouettes and such.

Escape from LA

Basically John Carpenter's Spiderman 3. Was totally on board with it until the basketball... then it went full-distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. I get that he was misguidedly trying to satirize the LA lifestyle, but why he chose extreme camp instead of the grittiness of the first movie I don't understand.

Hangover 3

Didn't really want to see it, but was heavily outvoted by my friends.

It was an alright ending to these movies, but never had a shot at being as good as the 1st. More coherent than the 2nd, but extremely predictable. None of the dialog was very funny and all of the best parts were in the previews. Probably "better" than 2, but 2 was at least funny in some parts.
You need new friends.

you need one new single friend who shares your extremely particular tastes and spergy theatre preferences. preferable a girl who then decides to live with you for the rest of your life.

The cast of Superman Returns had no problems. Frank Langella was a great Perry White, Lois was just fine, Cyclops was good as her husband... and Routh did a fine job as Christopher Reeves as Superman. I think Routh did an even better Superman in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, as that's the kind of casually arrogant character I picture Superman could actually be. My point is, it wasn't a problem with the cast, it was the director trying to remake a 1980s Donner film.

Quote from: AVClub
There, tough-guy scientist Jor-El, played by Russell Crowe, pleads with the planet’s government to take action against a coming environmental cataclysm. (This is the first of the movie’s many half-hearted attempts at political relevance, which culminate in Superman punching out a Predator drone.)

*End credits scene*

Kal-El sits in the Fortress of Solitude viewing pictures of his parents and lost home planet. Suddenly he hears a cup being placed on a glass table, and quickly turns around to see Nick Fury on the couch.

Kal-El: How did you penetrate the defenses?
Nick Fury: Bruce gave me the key
Kal-El: But The Batman does not have a key to the Fortress of Solitude
Nick Fury: It's an expression. I figured you would have smelled me a mile away
Kal-El: You must have come down wind
*Fury lights his cigar and says "you're god damn right"*
Nick Fury: I'm forming a new team, but I need your help. We're going to need some intel on a few -
Superman: Sorry, I don't spy on Americans
*Fury blows smoke circles*
Nick Fury: Protecting Americans is my job
Superman: Protecting their civil liberties is mine

he'll be back in a few days and casually toss out a catch-all theory as to why the critics didn't love it, something like "liberal media critics saw Superman destroying Obama's Drones so they had no choice but to attack the film" and that will be that.  Nothing could ever stand in the way of his pre-determined opinion of a movie he hasn't seen.  Nothing!

Makes Superman Returns look like Superman: The Movie. Makes Superman: Grounded look like All-Star Superman. Makes Identity Crisis look like Crisis on Infinite Earths. Make Death of the New Gods look like Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Makes JSA look like JLA. Makes that argument you had with your friends about how Batman could beat Superman with kryptonite look like The Death of Superman.
