Toward the very end, I kinda liked it, but in the middle I was ready for it to get on about its business. Also, repetition of the "I am her... SPIRIT" monologue was overdone. I think it ran three times, total.

Still, Eva Mendez. Va va voom!
I can totally agree with the bolded

Robot JOX 2!

I have a feeling Pacific Rim is headed for Bomba.  No one I've shown the trailer to who isn't a nerd gets it at all.

Because if I said "Transformers" before the movie came out my wife, mom, dad, sister, brother all knew what I was talking about.  Plus Michael Bay makes movies people see.

Yeah I bet Pacific Rim is going to bomb. Even my nerd friends think it looks stupid because "giant robots are dumb".

But man does it look like the best movie of the summer!

Hard to call

I don't have any illusions that giant anime robots have any appeal to the general public, but that doesn't mean it can't work as a summer popcorn flick.

Hey man, don't look at me, but in my experience that seems to the prevailing idea here. I tried so many times to get friends into anime and they never did enjoy the robot stuff and the reason was "because robots are dumb". About the only one people seemed to be ok with was Eva. Even people I know who seemed to like anime had the idea that they wouldn't watch an anime if it was about giant robots. Stuff like Code Geass and Eva got a pass because those shows I guess have other things going on. Though I mean if you ask me, if you like some of the themes in Eva the freaking giant robot genre is for you.

And besides I never got how giant robots are dumb, but not dudes firing energy lasers at each other aren't.

And that kind of seems to be the general view of the western anime community anyway. Are giant robot shows that popular?

It's pretty expensive too so yea, very high bomba possibility. There's been a lot of talk about nerds dominating the box office but I'm not sure that's accurate. So far most of the recent, successful comic films attract pretty large female audiences alongside the male demographics; Christian Bale, the Thor guy, etc all generate female interest plus all those films have pretty big romantic arcs. Pacific Rim seems like a pure dudebro cumshot. Sure Idris Elba is in the film, and he's arguably the most handsome man since 2pac, but I'm not sure he's going to get women into the theater. Plus this isn't an established IP/series/sequel/adaption/etc.

Also the lead actor is kind of forgettable, making the film even tougher to sell. Who knows, maybe we'll be wrong. Personally I'm not a "big robot action" guy either, but I like Del Toro and love Elba so I'll be there.

I dunno about all that... given that they aren't actually mecha at all, given that the whole show just turns into mindfuck psychological deconstruction, the first, maybe, half?  Half of the show?  Might be a good indicator you dig on mecha anime... Gurren Lagann seems to be more of a standard bearer for a good modern mecha anime.

Oh right... movie thread.  Pacific Rim?   Hell yes.  Must see.  Looks awesome.
I never really got the argument that the Eva's aren't mechs just because the show reveals where the mechs actually come from. It's like everything else in the show resembles a mech show, but because they get revealed to be a bit more organic it's not a mech show? I don't agree.

I mean are the mechs in Gasarki not mechs because the show reveals them to be of spiritual origin?

But it's not even that. Father son dynamics, growing up, identity issues. All themes Eva explores. All things a lot of mech shows explore regardless that their tone may be different than Eva. It's pretty much why I like mech shows. Sure the mech action is cool, but a lot of them deal with stories that I like. I mean Giant Robo is possibly one the best anime I've seen story wise.

This dude transports from San Fransisco to the Klingon home world using a Dyson vacuum in about three seconds.

A damage Enterprise travels from the Klingon home world to Earth in four seconds before it's knocked out of warp by the biggerer and fasterer ship...wait, they arrived at Earth perfectly anyway.  wait, were they trying to go through Earth? wait, why is no one guarding Earth at all? wait, why wasn't anyone guardian that San Fransico meeting involving the top brass of starfleet.  wait, the Enterprise and supership just happen to crash land over San Fransico, where the starfleet headquarters are located?

The bigger ship catches up to the Enterprise because it's traveling at "like, faster warp" dammit, use numbers! NOS in the Fast franchise is more specific.

Spock turns to gamefaqs Future Spock™ for information on Khan.  Asks "how do we defeat him" and I'm pretty sure Future Spock wouldn't know.  How about instead of phasers, you shoot bullets into his knee caps, then hold him down and funnel zzzquil into his mouth.

Khan's 300 years old, been sleeping for 200-some, and knows how to make dope weapons and spaceships because he's a savage or something.

I liked the "Chekov, put on a red shirt" line and the look on his face.

I liked that intro bit.  I would've liked more fun space adventures like that.

I liked Khan dominating a dozen klingons and three ships like it was nothing.  I liked Khan just standing around while Kirk's trying to injure him.  Uhura's on the side like "this is embarrassing...can we got now?"

I liked that Nolan North is in the movie long enough to wonder "was that Nolan North?"

I liked Peter Weller having none of his daughter's sass.  I didn't like the lame costumes Peter Weller and crew wore.

All the direct callbacks to Wrath of Khan were pretty lame.

...I think that's everything.

wait, that ring that explodes when dropped in water.  wtf?

best part of the movie was cumberbatch, despite being given a half-assed role.  first half of the movie was quite enjoyable, and then they just resorted to nostalgia to carry them the rest of the way.  despite being handled in a somewhat clever way, I just couldn't help but think that this was some sort of studio intervention at some point to make it a nostalgia circle-jerk.

I have no connection to Star Trek (have never seen any of the movies prior to 09 Star Trek, have only seen a small bit of TNG and TOS, and nothing else) so the only feels I have to the nostalgia call-backs are strictly from cultural osmosis.

That said, I thought Into Darkness was pretty cool. Fun action and setpieces, pretty well told story with plot holes that didnt directly detract from my enjoyment of it. Clever twist of scenarios and usage of characters. It's funny in spots. etc etc. it's a good flick.

There's some stuff I could rail against it. Mostly the fact that I had a hard time caring about the characters enough to get attached to the action and plot. Thankfully the action and plot is fun enough to hold my attention. Also the first act is really messy and it struggles to get proper footing. It stumbles forward with all these plot points just.... barely.... holding... then things start getting going and it hits it's strides.

And now that I think about it, I get an overall feeling this movie was just a mess in development. The entire thing reminds me of a stop-gap until that actual Star Trek stuff starts.

Whatevs. It was fun. I enjoyed it.

But I liked Iron Man 3 more.

Klingons are really very stupid.  Might be confusing if you've never seen any other star trek.  And the klingons are even dumber in this universe.; three ships and a dozen foot soldiers couldn't hit a single stationary target.

They're only the 'greatest threat' because humanity can't defend itself for shit and the rest of the universe is made up of green and cat ladies for Kirk to sleep with.

http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/star-trek-into-darkness-3d-opens-to-2m-late-night-and-imax/

Quote
One thing I can say for sure: despite the passage of 4 years and the addition of 3D and IMAX for ticket premiums, Star Trek Into Darkness even though its release began Wednesday night will not beat 2009′s Star Trek opening 3-day weekend. The new film’s 4 1/2 day number may not even gross bigger than 2009′s $75.2M. Paramount obviously wants to put the best face on an underperforming situation and is still telling me that “when opening day isn’t Friday you get a higher multiple vs Friday”. But the numbers are the numbers, and rival studios have estimates for STID that are dramatically lower.

Even with 3D and IMAX surcharges the movie is making less in 4 days than the last one did in 3.

With Hangover III and Fast 6 next weekend, it's DOA.

$190 million budget. About $75 million in the US over the first four days. Fast 6 and Hangover are a lock for the top two box office slots next weekend.

I thought this movie was pretty enjoyable.  I've seen a lot of documentaries or interviews where some shitty artist pretends to be all deep and intellectual in spite of putting out nothing but shit (aka Madonna; this would be "The GAF Effect" if we're talking about forums) and I think this movie skewers these clowns pretty well.  Lots of cocks flopping around and a set of saggy tits :yuck  Worth a watch if you ever get bored.

Traffic

Ensemble casts seem to be more miss than hit these days but this one is a pretty nice hit.  Seeing that BBC tear into that rich white girl pussy :whew  The movie also skewers the drug addled pseudointellectual bullshit you hear every now and then.  They found the perfect actor in Topher Grace for that.  Benicio Del Toro and Michael Douglas are the strongest points by far.  Go watch it.

$190 million budget. About $75 million in the US over the first four days. Fast 6 and Hangover are a lock for the top two box office slots next weekend.

$84 million through Sunday.

$70 million three day. And $84 million is still less than the first one made in three days. It's a bomb, and dead next weekend when the movie of the summer releases.

I really enjoyed Dark Circles, the director has some excellent ideas, and unlike Sinister, doesn't turn to shit with dancing ghost children.

I saw that Star Trek movie.  I liked it more than Wrath of Kahn or whatever.  Suck it, nerds.

This is the same as saying 28 Days Later isn't a zombie movie.

Saw Star Trek, kind of meh after all the hype that it'd be awesome.  It's basically:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
75% a mehtastic uninteresting FEDERATION IS EVIL conspiracy mystery (that's been done to death a million times and EVIL ADMIRAL is zzzz antagonist) and then 25% an enjoyable big blockbuster Star Trek VS. KHAN movie with an interesting antagonist, great action scenes, and some actual human connection.  It's not a bad movie but it just feels like they wasted 3/4ths of the script on rushed shallow plotting with no character development instead of making an awesome Star Trek movie.

First Iron Man 3 is entertaining, but shallow, summer flick:

HE-MANdarin lolz

Now Star Trek is too.  Gatsby apparently sucked.  Where is the summer movie to save us?  The one that is big blockbuster but actually has some depth to the script?  PACIFIC RIM PLZ SAVE US

I like J.J. Abrams a lot, but I'd put Star Trek 2 around Super 8 in the eh, it's alright I guess category, below Star Trek 1, Mission Impossible 3 and Cloverfield even though he didn't direct that.

Everyone I've shown the Pacific Rim trailer to has said "holy shit that looks awesome".  I think it will play a lot better than most people think.

Is this a thing now?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/8698783/Trek-sorry-for-gratuitous-bra-scene

I thought this scene AND the whole Pepper in her non-flammable sports bra were silly as fuck and unnecessary. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Thankfully they included the screencap so the article wasn't a complete waste of time.

I'm happy that Man of Steel has a regular IMAX option.  It's only during matinee and cost the same, but at least there's the option.
