Wolf of Wall Street

Fucking great!  I mean, I don't think there's ever been a "bad" Scorsese movie (even Gangs of NY being his weakest in the last couple of decade; it was still a good watch), or even one that wasn't ridiculously entertaining.  Very well directed, incredible performances.  Like wowwww, DiCaprio even outdid his Howard Hughes role in Scorsese's The Aviator.  If it wasn't for those 12 Years a Slave performances (which were damn good), he'd be winning best actor for sure this year.  Still could!  Even Jonah Hill was great, as were all the supporting actors/actresses.  The script was REALLY GOOD.  Very funny and entertaining while also telling a good story.  Maybe best film I've seen this year.  I liked 12 Years a Slave a lot, but it was more for the powerhouse performances from everyone and less from the film as a whole itself (which was good, just didn't think it amazing).  Going to see Inside Illeywn Davis tonight (most hyped film for me this year as Coen Brothers are my favorite directors), then will check out Her down the line and see where Wolf stands, but yeah, absolutely worth the ticket price.

I was surprised at the low RT score (77% or something) for a Scorsese film, but then reading the reviews it's kind of lame.  Basically the movie is about greed and excess and so there is a HUGE excess amount of full-frontal naked models everywhere, lots of sex and lots of cursing to emphasize the vulgarity of it all.  Apparently this upsets a lot of people and at least half of the negative reviews are by conservative people getting offended that the movie wasn't NC-17 (which I agree, Scorsese totally got a pass by the MPAA because it's Scorsese.  No one else would've gotten this cut through without an NC-17).  Lame.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Man, and here I thought A Serious Man was gonna go down as the Coen Brother's most minimalist, bleak and obscure film.  I liked ILD a lot, and there's a lot of depth to it.  Does a good job with the main guy's tale and does a really GREAT job portraying Greenwhich Village Folk Scene right before the Folk Scene hit it big.  Really authentic poor starving artists background to the tale.  The music was really nice and the cinematography has this fairy tale like soft look that works considering it's christmas and NYC in the snow and the story even has a hint of Mr. Grinch in it.  Some good performances too.  Carey Mulligan chews scenery in her brief screen time.  She spits anger like only a damn fine actress can.  Oscar Isaac is great too and this is definitely his breakout role (and his hair looks SO MUCH BETTER in the movie than he looks in real life where he just looks like a generic fit dude  [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1209966/?ref_=nmmd_md_nm]).

It's not really a movie that instantly hits you as fantastic, like Wolf of Wall Street, but the more you think about it the better it gets.  Really liked it, but I love like every Coen Brothers' film, so I'm a bit biased.  Been a good week seeing two of my favorite directors (Scorsese & Coen) films back to back.  If only my other favorite director's film was opening now, instead of in April (Wes Anderson - The Grand Budapest Hotel).

Saw 7 Psychopaths, then went and watched In Bruges. I enjoyed both of them, but preferred the quieter weirdness of In Bruges. I hope Colin Farrell continues this path of wanting to act again, as he was quite good in both. Ralph Fiennes' In Bruges character was tripping me out :lol

It's good but not amazing. The first 30 minutes are kind of a clusterfuck of broadway songs.

Bro its supposed to be funny.

but I agree on a lot of things. Its really uneven but I still enjoyed it. It feels like a cheap imitation of a Scorsese movie. This was made even more apparent when I went to go see Wolf of Wall Street afterwards which was absolutely incredible.

I thought SLP and The Fighter were both great but they were a lot smaller than this film in scope and it really feels like it was out of each as far as talent went. It could have been great. But I still enjoyed it.

hell yeah it's shitty movie day!

The Boys All Love Mandy Lane - Slasher film which kind of toys with the genre a bit.  You'll see the "twist" coming from a mile away.  Good characters mixed in with some really obnoxious ones makes this kind of difficult watching, but I do like that they spent a good deal of time with the characters before killing them off.  Final segment doesn't make much sense.  Not really suggested for casual fans of the genre as it's not the platonic ideal of the slasher genre and people who are hardcore fans of slashers may get bored long before any blood makes its way to the screen.

The Devil's Pass - Bunch of college kids go investigating a real life mystery and find all kinds of wonderful weirdness.  It's a found footage film but it doesn't devolve into horrible shakeycam until the end.  Not horrible but not great either.  The ultimate reveal is pretty cool, even if the associated creatures are kind of eh.  Not really a monster movie per se so much as it is a Sci-Fi "Bad Place" tale.

Ninja 2 - fuck yeah.  lots of good   fights with extended middle-distance takes and a minimum of horrific quick cuts to hide the fighter's inability to fight.  GREAT final fight scene.  Lots of great varied fight sequences.  Definitely worth a watch if you don't mind low-budge fight films.  As many of you fetishize horrible 80s action films, you should like this.

Currently watching Grabbers which is the Irish Tremors.

update Grabbers was funny in parts.  pretty good comedic creature film which sadly isn't as good as Tremors. ah well

also watched People Under The Stairs which I liked and was amazed that I hadn't seen before.

Saw The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug last night...

I'm so fucking torn.  It was a good movie in its own right.  But you can really see in this one where they're stretching themselves thin for 3 movies.  Though I honestly believe if you're not familiar with the book it won't bother you or you won't care.  But so much of it is so unnecessary and they skip over things in the book that they actually could have expanded upon for just completely made up portions of the story.  It got a great reaction from the crowd though.  Smaug was really, really well done.  His voice, the animation, his design.  Incredible.  They brought him to life better than I could have imagined.  The pacing is uneven.  But it's PJ so is anyone surprised?  But even with that everything is extremely well done and interesting.  If you liked the first Hobbit you'll like this one.  Oh and the ending is a cliff hanger cock tease of epic fucking proportions.  If I didn't know what happened in the book I'd be fucking pissed.  I couldn't believe where they ended the movie.  No resolution whatsoever for any of the story arcs.

So in short:

+Gorgeous movie
+Smaug is fucking incredible
+Nerd porn through and through
+Fun adventure
+Bombur is more than a joke in this one and redeems himself

-Uneven pacing
-Cliff hanger/awkward ending
-Rapes the fuck out of the book

Since I'm sure someone will ask. Here are some spoilers...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
They go through so much effort to shoehorn in a really unnecessary love story.  That's probably the most offensive part of all the added shit.  And they end the movie with Smaug flying to Lake Town.  But this is after a thirty minute chase through Erebor where they run in circles and eventually cover Smaug with melted gold and really do nothing.  It's a pointless chase, but it's pretty to look at.
[close]

i actually thought the first one was visually more appealing.

very enjoyable film, though.

The Last Will And Testament of Rosalind Leigh - great little film about a man who must contend with the death of his mom.  it's a film about loneliness and faith and the inability to reconcile with your folks.  Not really scary, more a depressing drama but it's quite good.

A Lonely Place to Die - Hikers come across a girl who'd been kidnapped and then must contend with her kidnappers.  Very grim, very violent, very cool.

A Cat In Paris - The art reminds me of Richard Sala but this is a cute little noir for kids with some lovely animation

Ghostbusters - still rulez.

Red State - surprisingly not horrible.  I don't know if I'd call it a horror film though.  I really liked John Goodman's character and the various Smithisms were far less annoying in the mouths of actually talented actors.  Also pleasant to see the folks from Breaking Bad in this.

I don't even think I'd call it a horror film really.  It's a film with some horrific moments, but they're few and far between.  I'd say it's more of a thriller.

I just finished The Objective which was directed by one of the Blair Witch Project directors.  I like it.  It reminds me of a Call of Cthulhu scenario.  Group of soldiers are sent to go investigate something for which they're wildly unprepared and it just destroys them as a team.  Not a great film by any means but it does a very nice series of reveals to build up tension as they wander further and further into this place which they should have avoided altogether.

Just watched Lars von Trier Nymph()maniac

Like Dogville and Melancolia I´ve watched it almost completely blind ( my GF just told me it was a LVT movie and had nudity).
That being said I could predict most of the scenes.

The setup is really bizarre, as usual with him,  but kinda self aware of how crazy the events happens, which leads to a lot of funny scenes.
Nudity is an understatement, sometimes its basically a porn without the cumshot.

Stellan Skarsgard is great as usual.

watch if you like LVT previous work.

Warning BTW be ready to see a lot of flabby cocks. I am a doctor and I saw more in this movie than in my profession.

I must have missed the boat on Wolf or something.

I just came back from seeing it.  And sure, I was entertained.  I laughed my ass off more than probably anyone else in the theatre at some of the hijinks.  Some of the writing was great, and the performances were certainly amazing, but as a whole, I dunno, the whole thing came across as a bit of a mess to me.  And definitely too long.

also, yeah, probably the most nudity I've ever seen in a mainstream flick.

Watched StarShip Troopers which I hadn't seen since it originally came out. I didn't especially like it back then and its only aged badly since then imo.

The Verhoeven charm isn't enough to lift the flick. And the cast is absolutely awful but not in a great awful way like Total Recall.
