Man, I wish they'd change comic characters race/gender more often. They're glorified mythology characters anyways.

Fuck that, I rather they include more black/latino/asian superheroes instead of changing the race to fill their minority quota and generate news.

THey won't be creating too many heroes for superhero movies. You need to talk to comic book industry writers about that one.

FF is a garbage tier comic book anyways. The archetypes of the characters are all cut from that 1950's cloth, which is boring to watch in a movie (ala Superman). The property has only been propped up because it had two of the best villains ever.

I don't think comic book fans have any aversion to interracial couples. Most have been clamoring for a Cloak and Dagger movie for years. I think they have more of a aversion of messing with what they see as 'canon'. Also, switching the racial identities of established characters has been done enough that it seems hacky now.

PD, half the comic book fans out there right now are losing their shit because Torch is black.  You really think that kind of person isn't gonna bitch about an interracial relationship?

Reed shouldn't really be goofy, either.  He's more of an oblivious asshole than a goof.  Aside from the previous Fox movies, anyway.

I wasn't under the impression comic fans represent most people.

White man/black woman relationships have been on television and film for decades, including on one of the most popular shows on television right now. I think the issue here is more about source material fans throwing fits over "drastic" adaption changes. The last recent example I can think of was with Game Of Thrones last year, when Pedro Pascal was cast as Oberyn Martell; fanboys screamed he was "too white" and it caused a stir.

And then there's the little chick in Hunger Games who people were upset is black; yet no one complains about Jennifer Lawrence being too white.

TLDR: Nerds gonna be nerds. Johnny Storm is white, sure...but being white doesn't really matter to his "character." It's not like say...making the Black Panther white.

Johnny is pretty much the only one cast that I'm okay with.  Sue should be black and older, Reed should be older and showing people he's down with the swirl, and Ben needs to be a lot older, too.

The casting seems cowardly and cheap on the whole.  Looking at it cynically, I think they want a black Torch for diversity, demographics, and a small bit of controversy, but they're avoiding black Sue cuz they're uncomfortable with a black female main character/a white male-black female relationship/having half the team be non-white.

I'm an FF fan and I don't really want to see this already.  Ultimate FF :yuck

That's not controversial in casting films, and especially television (see: Scandal). The reverse, black man-white woman, is rarely done because it can be controversial. IIRC Will Smith doesn't kiss his white wife in Hitchcock.

I haven't even noticed they still pulled that kind of shit.  I thought that kind of thing was done with after Sidney Poitier slapped a cracker.

Many do, it's just that most of the iconic characters were created during the Jim Crow days.

Bill Mantlo is in hospice care and his family approaches destitution due in part to the flamboyant failures of the American health care system, but frankly, the fact that he doesn’t see much in the way of royalties for his work cannot possibly be helping. Marvel is about to release a movie that will probably pull in half a billion dollars at the minimum, and Mantlo’s family won’t see anything from it.

If comics taught me anything, it taught me that that isn’t right.

Wasn't there a story recently about a famed comic book creator who got really sick, racked up tons of medical bills, and then died penniless because he didn't see a dime in royalties? I'm trying to remember the guy's name, but nothing's coming to mind.

You have more faith in Fox (and your fellow man) than I do, I guess.

Well then, I'm all ears: why do you think we have racially mismatched siblings in this movie?  What do you think is the reason Sue isn't being played by a black actress?

I haven't read anything, but I'm going to assume Johnny is her adopted brother, which is an interesting way to be diverse without being too diverse. I remember a GAF thread about the casting call not having race restrictions, and people were suggesting Jordan as well as Donald Glover.

A better question, to me, is: if someone like Zoe Saldana had auditioned for the role, would Fox have rejected her on the basis of race? Honestly I doubt that, especially for Zoe, given her previous work with Fox and the fact that she's somewhat of a reliable face for these types of films. Whereas Kate Mara isn't necessarily some big box office name/draw.

Honestly, the only notable actor in the main cast is Jordan. I think the film is going to bomb because it doesn't have a reliable attractive white male lead. Mr. Fantastic isn't really a "hot" character, but given Marvel's previous success at casting male leads I still find the choice puzzling - the actor doesn't have a chin for christs sake. Same with Grimm; he'll likely be CGI for much of the film, but you would think Marvel would cast a heartthrob to put women in the seats.

Yeah, Marvel's got little to do with this one.  This is Fox forcing out a movie because they inexplicably want to sit on the movie rights of characters that have proven only marginally more valuable than Daredevil did for them.

I'm pretty confident Marvel would actually do a Fantastic Four movie properly.

ahh forgot about that, you're right. Did Marvel have influence on the first X-Men? It had pretty good casting.

I'm fine with aging down the characters, but you have to do it right. And this definitely seems like a huge dropping of the ball.

Gross. I used to be an FF collector as a kid, but bailed on the comic when they made She-Hulk a member.

My favorite storyline arc was when Johnny was dating Frankie Raye (a woman with similar powers as him). Terax the Tamer (a herald of Galactus) comes to earth and starts wreaking shit with plans on universal domination. Galactus shows up to put him in his place (and does) and then needs a new herald. Frankie Raye steps forward and becomes Nova. Pretty great swerve.

Yeah, I think this is it rather than the specific fear of an interracial relationship.  No way were they making half the team nonwhite.  So black Sue would have been a possibility, but then we'd have a white Johnny.

Watched the European cut of Possession.  I cannot recommend this film enough.  Portrait of a failing marriage which explodes into violence and surreal horror.  Absolutely beautiful film.

Also if anyone is into podcasts, Faculty of Horror is two women discussing horror and horror theory from sociological perspectives.  Very good stuff.  Sadly they only do one episode a month but they may have convinced me to watch Jennifer's Body....

The better GoT comparison is the spergfit that Oberyn Martell's casting caused. A lot of fans seemed to think he was darker in complexion, whereas the books specifically say the Martells are fairer than most of the noble families in the area. It's interesting, even the South American fans were upset; in general, they tend to be the biggest fans of Dorne, at least from what I've seen.

Looks fine to me. I visualized the Martells being rather Spanish looking, and this dude fits the bill.

Crawlspace - pretty good Aliens riff from Australia.  Bunch of colonial marines have to infiltrate a government facility after it goes off line.  Pretty neat central concept involving secret experiments.  At points it low budget bona fides shine through, but there are certainly worse ways to spend an hour and a half.  You'll feel like you've seen this before but it's still pretty fun.

Watched that recent Hobbit movie last night. I can't tell which one of these is the largest factor but

A.) These movies seem less good and less well made than the Lord of the Rings movie.
B.) I'm getting bored of these characters and of this universe.
C.) These movies are too fucking long and too padded.

All that being said its an okay movie. And certainly over the first half of it, I was mostly enjoying myself but the longer it went on, the more I lost patience and was like get on with it. It's obvious where things are going but this movie delights in dragging its feet. I was so annoyed and curious that I bothered to look if some of this stuff was in the original book (I've never read any Tolkien) and was doubly annoyed to find how much of it was made up.

I just think the charm of the universe and these movies is wearing thin for me. The first time I saw Legolas fighting in the Lord of the Rings movies, I thought badass. This time I was bored out of my mind every time he fought. Stolen from Red Letter Media but it really did feel like I was watching an overly long director's cut of movie. Trim out like 45 minutes and you'd probably have a better film.

A little of A, but probably mostly B and C.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
And the fact that with LotR they were mostly trying to figure out which minor plot threads could be cut out to keep the movies from being even longer than they already were, compared to the Hobbit movies where they actively inventing new plot because there wasn't enough material in the book for 9 hours of cinema.
