finally plunked down the $20 to see Gravity in 3D before it left theaters and was blown away by the spectacle but not by the script which was firmly in the "one damn thing after another" school of plotting.

Monsters was so fucking awful.  The trailer looked great.  Me, my wife and a friend drove 3 hours to see it (there were other reasons, but this was the main one).  Oh god.  The fucking pain and regret.  My friend took 10 grams of shrooms beforehand and told me it was the worst experience of his life because of that damn movie.

Goddamit why didn't they name the Raccoon Rocky?

ROCKY RACCOON

WENT INTO HIS ROOM

Not sure if serious but, his full name IS Rocket "Rocky" Raccoon and he IS seeking Gideon's Bible.

The Brothers Bloom
Rian Johnson made a big first impression on me with Brick, and reinforced it with Loopers. I dig his style and technique. I'd seen mixed reviews on The Brothers Bloom, but there are a lot of great movies out there with mixed reviews. From the opening of the movie, I was hooked and laughing aloud repeatedly. How could this movie get mixed reviews? It is charming, smart, hilarious, and has an interesting world not too far off from our own, believable by its own rules.

Then the last 20 minutes or so seems to abandon that for red herrings, darkness, and some truly nonsensical forced plot elements which make the whole thing untenable. I don't mind tragedy, and I don't begrudge happy endings, but this felt like it tried to tread a fine line and ended up just straddling it.

The Brothers Bloom was up and down and ultimately felt like it wasn't really about anything significant, but I still enjoyed its energy. Looper is definitely Rian Johnson firing on all cylinders, though, and hopefully a taste of what his career is going to be going forward.

I like that phrase. Both Looper and Brick are Rian on all cylinders. I think that's where he is going, but MAN, TBB was a lot of fun during the first two acts. Exciting, intriguing, you can see Rian playing with audience expectations and subverting them... and then he just kinda drops it. I suspect there was an original ending which was replaced with this one. “there’s no such thing as an unwritten life. There are only poorly written ones.” - Does this apply, even if it's only the ending?

I liked his segment in VHS1 but pretty much everyone else I know hated it.

House of the Devil was pretty good.

Innkeepers was boring, bordering on pretentious. Ending was stupid too.

He's got potential but his name alone isn't enough to hype me for something. Way too uneven.

Innkeepers was very watchable for most of its runtime since Sara Paxton is nearly a perfect intersection of cute and hot, but yeah, the movie amounts to practically nothing in the end. I think Ti West could have a bright future ahead of him, but he's still got a ways to go.

John Dies at the End

So this was an internet thing that certain groups of internet people are like "how could you not have heard of this???" like when magus says he tired of seeing pokemon memes everywhere and the rest of us have no idea what he's talking about.  I never looked into it, or read it, but I did remember seeing the title of this book turned movie here and there in internet threads over the years, so curiosity got to me and I watched the movie on netflix.  Was entertaining as a B-movie Hunter S. Thompson meets Twilight Zone.  Read up on the book differences afterwards and all the book fans proclaiming the film burns their eyes and is the worst adaption ever and so on, but didn't seem all that different.

Enjoyed it enough that I'm thinking about picking up the sequel book and giving that a read sometime.  Movie was worth a watch if you haven't read the book and like over the top sci-fi.

The Fountain: Beautiful, from start to finish. Cinematography, analog special effects, perfect performances, and a message which feels genuine and moving. A surprisingly concise movie, considering its subject matter. Why the hell did I not see this sooner?

I can usually tell how I'll get along with someone by how much they like or hate this movie (there is no middle ground.)

The Haunting of Julia - Ghost story featuring Mia Farrow.  What could go wrong?  Damn. Near. Everything.  Flat and boring which shouldn't be a surprise from the director of such great films as Firewall and Wimbledon.  I had to go on Wikipedia to even figure out what the hell was going on in the ending as it cuts from the main character holding a wind up toy to her with her throat slit and no indication that it was the Toy which slit her throat.  Also the soundtrack is godawfully 80s. All over the top synth sounds.

Thor 2, eh.

all these Marvel movies are ending up kinda samey.  I have hopes for GOTG because James Gunn should be incapable of making a flavorless movie, but I just don't know.

I know a film version is being planned off The Disaster Artist, the book about the making of The Room.  I am now convinced that Tom Hiddleston is the ideal choice to play Tommy Wiseau.  Give him some makeup to make him look a bit weirder, a vocal coach for the accent, and he could pull it off.  Either that or get Nicolas Cage some high grade peyote and let him do it, your choice Hollywood.

Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, the movie of his concert performance at Madison Square Garden, was a movie-of-the-week rental, so I watched it. I have liked Hart on every TV appearance I've seen him on, but this was not as good as I'd hoped it would be. The first fifteen minutes show how Hart has played all over the world, and is beloved by his fans all over the place -- fifteen fucking minutes in a stand-up comedy movie, one sixth of its entire length, with NO COMEDY BITS. In the end, I laughed more times, and for more total time, at the much shorter CONAN bit where they rented a Lyft Car with Ice Cube. So here's that again, so you can save an hour and a half, and have just as many laffs:

Yeah, I've grown bored of the Marvel movies.  Gonna catch them all on video now.  Maybe see The Avenger's 2 and Ant Man in the theater bit otherwise these PG-13 safe as it goes Marvel movies are rentals at best.  Still haven't seen Thor 2, will watch it one of these days and gonna pass on Captain America 2 until it's streaming.

I think they're getting better in some ways.  Iron Man 3 was a fun comedy/buddy cop movie.  Guardians of the Galaxy is a space adventure movie.  Ant Man is a heist comedy with edgar wright and paul rudd.  and captain america 2 is supposedly like a bond or bourne movie or something.  doesn't seem like they're as beholden to the typical comic book movie formula.

TBH, I wouldn't have watched Thor 2 if it wasn't for The Avengers, but now it's like "Well, I guess I kinda gotta see it" even though I know there's no real connection to rest of the Marvelverse other than the post-credits scene and a few dropped references. It wasn't terrible, just kinda meh.

Yeah, forgot about Guardians of the Galaxy, I think that's the only Marvel movie that I'm actually excited about because it feels different and has fun characters like Rocket Racoon and Chris Pratt.  Ant-Man I'm down for because of Edgar Wright.  Otherwise the rest just seem kind of same-y.  I think part of it is that their villains tend to suck.  Aren't they fighting like Orcs or Dark Elves or something in both Thor 2 and Captain America 2?
