Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch look pretty good. I think they'll just end up calling them "Unregistered Gifteds", that's what they've been doing on Agents of Shield.

That is animated perfectly.

I have faith in it especially after the recent movie special. They did Peanuts justice.

That doesn't look weird at all. It's pretty 60's era Peanuts cartoons animated in a more lively 3d manner. It even has the squiggliness that was created from the limited animation seen in the older cartoons except in a fluid manner.

See:

The fact they were able to recreate it is masterful.

They even nailed the subtleties in how Charlie Brown blinks.

I think The Simpsons Movie would have worked better if they had taken on a better scope, it was really just like a dragged out two-parter episode. They had done larger scale single episodes in prior seasons.

I seem to recall it being pretty highly praised at the time, remember getting some pretty angry pushback from forum goers after suggesting that I could count the number of laughs with my thumbs. And that "Spider-Pig" was definitely not one of them.

The Giver trailer:

:kobeyuck :larry :comeon :goty2

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Giver has never needed nor deserved a movie (and I mean deserved as in, it doesn't deserve such a punishment.) The trailer makes it look like generic action-scifi slosh. Ugh. Also Jonah is too old.

Good parts:

- Jeff Bridges is an amazing choice for the Giver. Wow. That's kind of perfect.
- The dining room setup actually looks 95% close to what I pictured in my head.

Bad parts:

- I really hope they make it so the opening scenes are in black and white. That's pretty crucial to the story. Hopefully they kept it out of the trailer because "OMG normies are afraid of black and white!!"

The more I think about The Dark Knight, the more I realize that it was extremely flawed. Stuff like "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" is ultimately pretty meaningless. It smacks of someone wanting to write very deep and serious dialogue, but not really having anything insightful to say.

The worst line is "Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs."  :ohhh

Absentia - I watched this horror movie because it was a kickstarter project and made for $70,000 and garned ok reviews so I wanted to see what they could do with no budget.  Apparently very little!  It's ok and does a decent job on scares at a few parts, and the acting is totally alright, but there's not story and the horror fun stuff is pretty lacking because they didn't have the budget to do much with it.  Eh, wasn't bad but wouldn't recommend spending 90 mins on it.

Bethlehem is a pretty dang good Israeli crime/espionage/terrorist drama.  A very solid no frills look at the security apparatus of Israel, and what its like to live/work/be exploited in it.  Despite being an Israeli film, its admirably evenhanded in its depiction of its strident (necessarily so) Palestinian characters.  It also keeps its very dense plot and constantly shifting motivations very clear, and for a movie with so much plot, it also features some nice, subtle character work.  Its not so dissimilar from a Paul Greengrass film, only, you know, better camerawork.  Recommended.

and Jean Claude Van Damme continues his streak of appearing in worthwhile movies directed by dudes with the last name of Hyams (six so far) with Enemies Closer.  Which takes a bog standard action movie trope (these guys will survive the night, if they don't kill each other first) and has fun with it, mostly by being an unabashed film about dudes punching each other, and by having the most delightfully cracked villain in recent memory.  JCVD gets a ridiculous haircut and was obviously paid by the weirdness quotient for his performance as the antagonist here.  The rest of the movie is merely competent, but Van Damme is an awful lot of fun to watch as the militant environmentalist killer.  And as mentioned, there's lots of fair-to-decent fist fightin'.

Grand Budapest Hotel

Holy shit, so good. Definitely the funniest movie Wes Anderson has done and maybe my new favourite. The set designs and costumes are insane as per usual, and it has basically everyone he's ever worked with in it just killing it. Adrian Brody calls people "candy ass" a bunch. I mean, come on.

George Washington Slept Here - never heard of it, but it's a 1942 comedy dealing with NYC's housing crisis.  A man's wife buys a 200 year old fixer upper because Washington Slept There (ah HA!) but the film turns into a really crappy version of Mr Blandings Builds His Dream Home. It's the kind of film where every character exists to affirm the superiority of the male lead (which is weird because he's so fucking incompetent at everything) Bonus appearance by Hattie McDaniel but she's unfortunately playing a hooooooooooooribly racist character (quelle surprise, right?)

Violent City - 1970 italian crime film starring Charles Bronson.  I stopped watching when our lead was going to rape the lead female character at some warehouse but was stopped because a group of people decide to beat up some other dude.  The female character says "why is it that violence surrounds you?"  to which he responds "baby, this whole town is violent, but you just never see it."  dames can be pretty philosophical after you try to give them what for

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Dear White People, which was an absolutely hilarious and quite nuanced.  White people do get the short shift in this film a bit (cue whining) as they are exaggerated to prove a point, but the film isn't really about them (cue whining) but is rather about the reactions of blacks to those very real situations.

the film got picked up by Lionsgate / Village Roadshow for distribution in the fall and I really can't recommend it enough.  Very, very, very funny.

The film style is Wes Anderson meets Spike Lee meets Robert Altman (the director last night said he was trying to make a Black Nashville)

Watched American Hustle last night.

It's one of those rare movies where I can't really pick out a flaw with it, yet it felt like an empty experience overall. Excellent aesthetics, very good acting and the movie had a nice pace to it with a coherent story.

Nothing felt hacky or forced (like in Argo), but nothing really connects you to the people on the screen (like The Departed).

El Callajon/Blind Alley/サイレントウエイ
A slew of new movies at the video store, and the cover art and back-of-box text for this one looked intriguing. Empty alleyway, woman making her way out of the darkness; something about being trapped in a laundromat.

Aside from a brief establishing sequence at the hotel where the heroine, Rosa, works as a maid, the whole movie is shot on a smallish set, comprising the launderette and the dead-end alley in which it sits. This movie could work pretty well as a stage play. The movie does an excellent job of conveying the importance of relevant distances. Rosa is nearly home when she receives a call that she'll need to wash and return her uniform. With a longing look at the foyer door she'd already opened, and a glance down the alley at the launderette, we're off on a tour of just how little distance can become critical.

The first half of the film is a cute romantic drama between Rosa and Gabrielle, a handsome and charismatic man who also needs to do his laundry at 3AM. He and Rosa seem to be hitting it off, until he runs off to use the toilet, and Rosa accidentally finds that Gabrielle was washing a bunch of bloodied women's clothing. Rosa realizes Gabrielle might not be a nice guy, and a cat-and-mouse game begins between them.

Ana de Armas (Rosa) is a talented young actress; she's probably more lovely than talented, but she's -so- lovely (.gif) that it'd be hard to be -that- talented. Seriously, is this what Cuba is exporting these days? Wow. There is, however, no gratuitous sex or nudity in the film.

There are several red herrings thrown in for good measure, as well as a few "see how clever I am!" writer moments which are pretty good. The lighting is good, camera work is competent, but the whole piece would have benefited from more consistent and interesting sound design. There are a couple of CG sequences which are only mildly out of place; it is difficult to believe that this production had budget to burn on them, and the overall story doesn't particularly benefit from them. There are a few spots where physical effects are used, and they are much more welcome than the digital ones.

They should have thrown "PRODUCER OF X-MEN: FIRST CLASS" just to hammer it home he's the only reason the series was good.

would kind of go against the spirit of this film, no?

maybe next time.

Seeing how it all ends up is what I'm finding interesting.  I think I read that a third wolverine movie is coming is 2017 or 18.  Don't know if jackman is in for it or the next xmen.  If he's in both that'll be his 8th or 9th time as wolverine.  So I'm assuming wolverine 3 is present and the next xmen is past.  Or xmen is present with a new cast, like a soft reboot explained by time travel.

Plus there's fantastic four that might be wrapped up in all this.

Or jackman stays on long enough to do old man logan.

I can't think of a single metric by which Superman Returns was as good as Man of Steel, let alone superior.

Watchmen was so bad, it proactively made Man of Steel a worse movie than if someone else had directed it.
