The revenge-Western-drama The Salvation is almost delightfully mean spirited towards its characters, but there's nothing cheeky about it. Its a Western in 2015 that doesn't feature a single twinge of irony, it doesn't seem to reference any other Westerns either, it doesn't comment on the genre its in, like the recently posted about Run All Night, its just about taking a classical genre, a familiar plot and resetting the pieces on the board and seeing how the game plays out this time.

Its better then Run All Night, although I don't think I could ever get tired of these sorts of meat-and-potato genre films, films that nail the shit out of the basics and add whatever artistic touches they can on the periphery. The modern Western lends itself to such flourishes, but its technical excellence is almost beside the point, so The Salvation has some great looking cinematography (oh the crags on Mikkelsen's face), a spare, an almost comically taciturn script, and a pleasing efficiency of going about its business. Its sincerity is charming, also its many shootings of people.

fool, the real proof that higher power exists is that Deep Blue Sea was put on Netflix the same day.

do not be tempted by those sweet visions of Sorbo, the real tracendent art is under the "Super-Intelligent Sharks" genre listing.

I just rewatched The Proposition a few weeks ago so I could go for a Mikkelsen/Eva Green austere Western. Looks like good times between this and that new Viggo Mortensen Argentine Western, although superficially that seems to be a lot less meat-and-potatoes and more arthouse in structure.

Horns - The story about Harry Potter with horns is neat and something fun and different in a dark comedy way for the first half, but tonally the movie goes between like 3-4 different genres (mystery, dark comedy, drama, horror) and really falls apart in the last act after the mysteries are revealed.  I put that on the director as it just felt a bit amateurish like he couldn't make it flow into one nice package.  But on the other hand, he has some nice music choices and it's fairly entertaining.  For whatever reason though he seems to get terrible performances from almost everyone even though there are good actors/actresses in it.  Eh, not bad but could've been better, 2.5/4.

Pretty sure the book only got middling reviews as well. Shame, as I like the central conceit a lot.

I never finished the book. Joe Hill is a good writer, but there's really only enough material there for a short story. It starts moving in circles fairly early on.

Charming as fuck.

If you have kids make them watch it. If you are an adult still watch it. It's a classic that is as good as any of the Pixar or other animated stuff that people rave about.

I wouldn't say it's horrible, that's a harsh word.  First half is solid, just directed like a TV movie; second half is a letdown but it's entertaining enough outside the last 20 mins where it drags and the final climax scene which is kind of stupid.

Rushed to the local arthouse and saw It Follows because I gotta see every horror movie that gets over 70-80% RT as a fan of the genre.  It's good and starts off REALLY GREAT, but by the end I think there's a few problems that keep it from being real great overall.  Basically it's a good 1 hour Twilight Zone episode while also being a nice 80s retro throwback (think first Nightmare on Elm Street) and a bit of Stephen King's IT.  The music is SUCH GOOD throwback synth.  The whole setup is a great combination but the characters are REAL DUMB, which is a horror throwback trope, but also pretty frustrating compared to the new take on horror where the lead character isn't dumb as rocks, there's a couple of plot holes:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Stuff like, I get it's the 80s but if kids are ending up in the hospital from GUNSHOT TO THE LEG, people are going to be asking questions and keeping them under supervision and they're not just going to be able to get up and leave like it's nothing.  The hospital trips are all kind of weird.
[close]

And the ending is ok, but also kind of cop-out.

One other stylistic thing:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I really think they shouldn't have ever shown IT.  The opening is AMAZING and so great because you can't see what IT is.  The part in the pool at the end is SO GOOD for a while because you can't see IT.  If the whole movie was just reactions and things like chairs breaking on air and not seeing IT until the pool where they cover IT with the blanket I think stylistically that would have given far more fear and tension because of the age old "What you imagine is far more frightening than anything someone can show".  I'd be ok with like showing the legs or a hazy figure of IT in the distance in the final shot behind them, but until that point I think it'd be a classic film if they never showed IT.

Re-watched 1988's Willow, written by Georgie Lucas, directed by Opie Cunningham, and starring Top Gun's "Ice Man" and several former Ewoks. This movie did not suck nearly as much as I remember it sucking. It's actually a heap of fun. I was surprised to see how many transitional wipes Ron Howard used, as though he were aping Star Wars' own use of serial adventure construction. Or maybe George just wrote those into the script, since he likes them so much. Joanne Whaley is hot. Both witches are still really annoying.

Willow was amazingly cast, but awfully hokey.

It's one of those movies where there is so much good in it, that the bad stuff really sticks out like a sore thumb. So, it becomes a bit frustrating because you see how good it could have been. The other Ron Howard move, Far and Away (Cruise and Kidman) suffered from the same kind of thing.

Yes, hokey. Star Wars is only slightly less hokey, but it worked in 1977, and holds up better than most 1977 films. It’s clear that they were looking to establish a new franchise with Willow. They could have filmed The Two Towers in a Star Wars fashion, no problem. I guess GL wrote the sequel as a novel with comics’ Chris Claremont once the movie had fallen on its face.

Ugh, sidetracking myself: It’s hokey, but there IS so much good stuff in it, the parts which are lame really brought it down when I saw it in the theaters and later on VHS. I remember having such high hopes. I had no such hopes this time, and it was better for it.

the real news here is that Shinji Higuchi is co-directing and handling the special effects.

As a director his record is mediocre (Japan Sinks and Lorelei kinda suck), which honestly doesn't bode well for the Attack on Titan film. But, he's really the best guy in the business for supervising kaiju effects, having worked on the absolute best films the genre had to offer during its last fertile period. Hiring him also pretty much confirms that at least some miniature work will be done.  Anno and Higuchi collaborated on a recent Studio Ghibli (effing awesome) live action short in fact. If Godzilla reaches this level of quality, well, golly. I might never need another movie ever again.

Seriously, a feature length of this makes me weak kneed with excitement.

It's kind of a shame that Mel Gibson has become persona non grata in Hollywood. He would be so perfect as the villain in a Mad Max sequel. He's the right age and the right amount of crazy to create something menacing.

I've been looking forward to this one.  8)
Tripe overrated Nolan bullshit film that tries to steal the best ideas of Kubrick and Malick, but ultimately revels in its own filth by the final third, revealing that despite it's phemenomal cast and influences Nolan's propensity for sentimentality and nonsensical plot devices triumphs over all.
