Rahx nails it except calling Iron Man 3 decent.  It was garbage too.  The Iron Man movies are all very forgettable.  I couldn't remember the plot of Iron Man 2 at all before 3 came out and I had read a synopsis.

I don't agree with Marvel movies being garbage...Like, not at all.  Quality definitely varies, but I really enjoyed Iron Man 1, Captain America 1-3, Avengers, Ant Man, Dr. Strange, and both Guardians Of The Galaxy movies.  Iron Man 2 was 'aight' and Iron Man 3 was kind of blah.  Thor was OK, I guess, and Thor 2 was bad.  I barely remember it...I just remember it being bad.  Avengers Age Of Ultron was also just all right.  Captain America 3 was the real Avengers 2 movie anyway.  Never saw the second Hulk movie.

I think Iron Man 3 is pretty solid.

It's got a good character arc for Tony complete with him doing stuff without the armor.

Is actually pretty well written and funny thanks to Shane Black.

Feels less "epic" then other Super Hero movies.

Has a fun bad guy thanks to Guy Perice.

And the plot feels kind of subversive and tight. Things come together and feel like a script that had an actual focus. Which is not something I could say for Iron Man 2. It also feels less like typical Marvel movie.

I know people don't like the Mandarien stuff, but I thought it was funny.

Hmm yeah I did forget about those two.

Strange was definitely full-on origin and the origin was the weakest part of that movie.

Ant-Man... I guess since there technically already was Pym Ant-Man and he was getting someone else in the suit I didn't think of it, but it's an origin too.

That's probably my bias since I know WW's origin but not Strange or Ant-Man's. :lol

There are plenty of criticisms to be made of the Marvel movies, but they've hit more than they've missed.

Up until WW, the literal best you could objectively say about the DC movies was that Man of Steel was watchable. That's it. Everything else is revisionist history or blind fanboyism. And there's been a loooooot of attempts at both in this thread in the past page or two, holy shit. Some of y'all need Jesus.

Ant-Man is great. If they didn't change anything in the actual movie but Wright had stayed on, everyone would be hailing it as another classic.

It's tough for me to pick the better between Wonder Woman, Ant-Man, Dr Strange. They're all kinda around the same quality for me and each has their standouts.

Wonder Woman - Godot is great and badass. The No Man's Land scene was awesome.
Dr Strange - The CG magic effects were cool and Ejifor was great. The post-credits scene with Thor was perfect.
Ant-Man - All the Peña flashback stories of "and then he said..." were utter genius & hilarious. Uh, that's about all I got.

I think I'm just not a big fan of comic origin stories. I really liked the first Iron Man and Captain America had like half a great campy movie and then was generic second half.

One reason why I like Marvel movies better is that take Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for example: Without the humor, it's just another generic comic movie plot zzz. But it's consistently funny and works as a comedy which elevates the generic plot underneath. Marvel movies typically are trending towards more and more silly and comedic (Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, Guardians 2, upcoming Thor 3) which helps and makes them worth watching because Marvel is too safe and afraid to every take any risks and do anything interesting with the plots underneath.

Otoh, DC movies aren't that silly and just have the occasional joke here and there. So all that's left is the generic comic plot underneath. DC could use a lighter tone imo. WW's best parts were the jokes since they made the characters likeable. I could also do without the DBZ fights at the end of Man of Steel, WW, BvS. It just feels so detached and videogame CG to me. Don't like those fights at all.

A Quiet Passion is an austere, frquently witty and very well performed film. Good thing, because any film about the life of Emily Dickinson has to work extra hard to be appealing to more than just the PBS crowd and English literature nerds. All the period appropriete dialog and dress do much to convey authenticism, as well as portray the stifling burden of being a women who is spectactularily ill suited to the era they live in. It excels in showing the daily grind, as it were, of a housebound, well off women of the mid-1800's. Its dedication to its mundane settings makes its commonplace conversations about faith, filial piety, and one' own social standing (remember, 1800's) as wheighty as they need to be. I can admire a film that is so comitted to telling a moving story without ever once being historonic. If nothing else, it sure is properly titled.

Hey guys, not to jinx things or nothing. But Terry Gilliam just wrapped up shooting The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Now granted, there are still a huge number of things that can derail this train (Gilliam dies, meteor strike, etc...), but ts looking good at this point.

I understand the people who don't like BvS, even if I don't agree, but I'll never get the MoS hate. It's a solid 7.5/10 film.

It's really not. It's more like 6/10. Like I said, it's watchable. "Eminently watchable," even.

It's not good, though.

MoS has some pretty cool scenes and is largely inoffensive, except for the ridiculously awful tornado scene. Like, I don't understand how anybody involved with production thought that was something that should be included in a film released for public consumption.

I don't think people give enough credit to an 'average comic book movie'. The genre (for 40 years now) has been mostly awful movies. It's still a feat to make one that stands on it's own, it's really easy to fuck up.

I watched Krisha since I'm pretty excited about It Comes At Night this weekend. Man, that is some heavy shit. I really like the family drama done with horror stylings. The music was strange but very well done and the content hit a little too close to home and reminded me of some holiday get together that escalated and ended similarly.

I love the book, as-is. I love the movie as well, because of its diametrically opposed take on the book's philosophy.

However, that's possibly the most boring trailer I've ever seen, especially for an action or suspense movie.

The CGI movie(s) ignore the sequels and drop the satire and go for a late 80s early 90s action movie thing, it's different, but then all the movies, the anime, the book are all pretty much in different genres. Works if you want to watch something not too challenging in a light sci fi action adventure setting.

Wise Blood

When it comes to John Huston, I've seen mostly the movies everybody knows him for. He's an excellent director, but aside from his work with my man Bogart I can't say I've seen much. Watched some Amoeba video where King Buzzo sang it praises, and the concept of a guy wanting to start a church without christ and his issues trying to do that sounded like a cool concept.

Man, I did not expect this. I never read the book so wasn't sure exactly where it'd go. As far as I'm concerned it's a masterpiece. Brad Dourif gives the performance of a lifetime. How the hell did this guy spend most of his time playing Chucky of all slasher monsters is beyond me.

If I have any issue with it, it's that I found the score to be a mixed bag and sometimes intrusive. Otherwise, I recommend it if you haven't watched it.

1m20s+ they talk about his work ethic and how accurate his accent was. Dourif is an underappreciated treasure.

Dourif has literally not put in a bad performance in his life. Even when he pops up in a TV show he still kills it. Trash horror movie? Kills it. He's in that small group of actors that just deserved a better world than the one they got stuck with.

He's in one of my favorite 90s b flicks that no one remembers Death Machine. It's directed by the same dude who did the first blade (and later league of extraordinary gentlemen....). It's from 94. It's got this weird cyberpunk meets 80s slasher vibe. Brad Dourif is essentially playing a sad cybergoth loser with faux dreads it rules:

and like all the best trash, theres like four different cuts but i think the only one Norrington likes/approved is the 120 minute cut that for a long time was exclusive to japanese laserdisc? I think they finally released it on bluray....in austria a year or two ago  :lol

I saw It Comes At Night last night and man the marketing on that is even more deceptive than it was for The Witch.  And just like The Witch it's a fantastic movie that will likely suffer blowback from it.  I'd hesitate to really even call it a horror movie.  Similarly to Krisha it's a very slow burn of tension and mystery that just explodes in the final act.  The actors are all pretty great especially in the final scenes where they all put in some really strong performances.

Side note: A guy on the way out of the show last night said "it reminds me of Hairspray.  It's pretty good but I should have just rented it!"  ???

Things Brad Dourif was awesome in:

The X-Files
Alien: Resurrection
Miami Vice
Murder, She Wrote
The Exorcist III
Tales From The Crypt
Millennium
Rob Zombie Halloween movies
Psych
Law and Order
Agents of SHIELD

Also everything else he's been in
He was so dominant in Star Trek Voyager they had to ditch the rest of the crew on a prehistoric planet so it'd be just him and the Doctor onboard.

Hmmm, I know absolutely nothing about this movie other than it's an indie horror flick with good buzz. Planning on seeing it this weekend and hope it's good. I like slow burn stuff like House of the Devil, but I thought the Witch was kinda boring for a lot of it. The Invitation was somewhere in the middle.

Watched Mean Streets by Scorsese. Loved that the movie starts in media res and ends somewhat inconclusively. It's also less on the "epic" side than Goodfellas and Casino (it's about mafiosos proud they stiffed hippies for 20$) and I liked that too. Richard Romanus looks like an italian Tony Curtis.

I watched The Magnificent Seven remake by Antoine Fuqua, which I was honestly prepared to hate. It was a 99¢ rental on iTunes, and had a 63% Rotten Tomatoes rating, giving it a "barely fresh" or nearly-rotten estimation.

Instead, there are some fantastic character bits in it, with some snappy dialog which I assume is partly from Nic Pizzolato's contribution to the script. No joke, this is also the first time I have ever enjoyed Ethan Hawke in ANYTHING.

It's a good ride, with a bit of an overlong final battle, and a couple of unforgivable tactical idiocy moves, involving a sharpshooter and/or a gatling gun. But, hey, it was a fun ride.

I liked it and was surprised because I really didn't want another one after the first. It was such a fun movie, that I thought they wouldn't be able to capture the charm again. They did.

Oddly enough, I re-watched the first one the other night. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did on the second go, and was convinced my wife would ask me to turn it off with all the splashy blood from the shootouts. Seems like she was into it, and I asked her what she thought about it. "It was a sad movie." I think it was that a puppy was killed. Anyway, she's a keeper.

Gonna line the 2nd one up for sometime after I've seen Logan.

Rewatched Rolling Thunder, and it's still the shit
yeah, yeah, yeah, King of Comedy is pretty good and such (Marty shoulda make more cringe comedy, he's great at it). But man, Rolling Thunder...

That movie has, pardon my French, some major cojenes. It also confirmed to me that Tommy Lee Jones has always, even probable on the day he was born, looked haggard.

King of comedy is kinda average. I like the argument and what the film tries to tell, De Niro is great but overall it's a tad boring. All relative to Scorsese talent of course. But I'd rather watch some of his recent films than this one.
