dat 2001 4k restoration :whew

it elevated the films to heights it possibly hasn't seen since its initial run. fucking shit, this is the new defacto when it comes to restorations, robert harris's lawrence of arabia be damned. i pity any fool that buys into that 70mm nolan garbage nonsense. that 1990 print it's based off of is notoriously known for being shit and it even made doubt whether i still had any attachment towards the film. luckily it's now back near the top. what an incredible experience

oh yea, and dat imax sound  :lawd

There were two Conan movies! One of them had Grace Jones! Excalibur! Legend!

Conan the Destroyer gets shit on a lot but despite its flaws (it's lazy, the violence is sanitized, some of the effects are garbo, it's very weak for a Fleischer direction, etc...) I think it's mildly enjoyable.

I think Conan the Destroyer is a smidge better, but Red Sonja falls into the same category for me. Ladyhawke too, although I haven’t seen it in forever. I dug it as a kid.

I’m guessing Neverending Story and Princess Bride are excluded for being kid/family movies? I’d at least include Princess Bride.

I think we should count Clash of the Titans, too.

That's not even counting all the low-rent productions Roger Corman knocked out down in Argentina: Warrior and the Sorceress, Deathstalker 1 - 4, Barbarian Queen 1 & 2, Amazons, Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 1 & 2, and Sorceress.

Of course, no one would confuse them with a good movie.

Gone deep into the rabbit hole of Japanese New Wave. Maybe some reviews later.

This video alongside Teepo and Vom's posts was great for a basic primer on where to start. Glad I wasn't the only one who overlooked Japanese New Wave. Apparently it's fairly common to do so.

Who makes these decisions  :doge

The entire point of the Moon missions was to beat the Russian to space and show that the capitalist system was better than the communist system without having to nuke each other.
It was an idea purely born from a sense of exceptionalism and raw nationalism as the leader literally asked the people what they could do for 'their country'.

Hollywood is a global entity now. It doesn't care about your jingoism.

So, it seems kind of silly to say that is a slap in the face of capitalism when it's the nature of capitalism that drove  them to make such a decision.

I watched Costner do his most restrained work to-date, as Kenneth Branagh did some of his least restrained, and Keira Knightley tried to steal the spotlight from Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. I'm not sure how to phrase it; Keira seemed to think she is in a drama, while Pine was performing well as a somewhat understated and reluctant action hero who has a helluva rough path to success. It was better than I expected it to be, all told. Closer in line with LeCarré than I expected from a Tom Clancy work.

I just watched 10 minutes of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because it was on Prime and it was the most depressing 10 minutes of my life. It was probably the worst thing I’ve seen since Yoga Hosers, which I truly believe is amongst the worst movies of all time.

Amazon put Blow Out Prime streaming a few weeks ago. It's legitimately a pretty good thriller that doesn't relish in too much schlockiness like a lot of De Palma.
Hmm, I kind of want to go back to this as I went back and watched Red October/Clear and Present Danger/Patriot Games in the last month and I quite liked Branagh's Orient Express but I've pretty much never heard anyone talk about it aside from "it's not as bad as the Ben Affleck one" when it came out and I don't think it's streaming anywhere.

Your point about people acting like they're in different movies reminds me of Mark Wahlberg in All the Money in the World(the Ridley Scott movie from last year that they had to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer.)

Plummer and Michelle Williams are really good in that one but it's like Wahlberg's doing his straight-man thing from The Other Guys which is bizarre when everyone else is in a deadly serious Ridley Scott movie. Other than that I thought it was a surprisingly entertaining "dad movie" but I was most of the way there with "Ridley Scott's doing a crime procedural set in 1970s Italy/Egypt." It's similar to how I feel about Black Rain(I don't recall the plot aside from there being a wild decapitation but I liked the way Japan and NYC were presented.)

Just finished this. What a ride. I'm still reeling over the last 15 minutes and feel the need to decompress. How Ingmar was able to capture such beauty and still provide a film that bites is astounding to me. From the psychoanalytical aspect, hard to face personal truths of these two women along with the imagery which further amplifies the scenario, and dialog. Its perfect and strange.

I was gobsmacked by the cinematography. The intent is so strong. The way Elisabeth and Alma are composed and framed at times, they almost meld into one being. And its done in such a way that its elegant, using the lines of the nape of their necks to draw you in to "their" center. Along with the use of light the film is also a masterclass of tonal contrast and how to use it to wonderous effect.

One of my favorite scenes I think of all time at this point is Elisabeth looking up past the camera while in bed as the light slowly fades. She doesn't blink and the light continues to dim until all you see is two specks of reflected light in her eyes which eventually extinguish. You can sense her inner turmoil and the slowly fading light adds so much to the scene.

And some.more Gifs

Check out Winter Light.

I think you're the only other guy who gave a shit about First Reformed instead of slinging shit over Star Wars or cape movies. It's short and it's on YouTube. I think Criterion put it out on DVD but not Bluray yet. It's pretty slow but at the very least you should find it interesting to see how much Schrader was...influenced...by it.

Apparently its on Filmstruck. Will definitely check it out.

I think thats why I appreciate Ingmar too. The runtime on his films are lean when compared to modern films.

As to the influence of it, I can now understand where that mystical scene is coming from. The break into surrealism makes sense now.

Fanny and Alexander tho.

Yeah, as I've gotten older I've definitely come to appreciate leaner films more. I used to love when I got to movies that ran over 2 and half hours like Deer Hunter or Once Upon a Time in America but it's a bummer now that it's harder to find an uninterrupted block or 3+ hours.

Oh man, went to my first film festival and it was intense. Was there 14 hours and saw 4 full length films and 2 hours of shorts. Was a horror film festival. One nice thing was a lot of the directors/writers/casts were there to do 15 min Q&As after each film.

Out of the short film block, Cerulia was an amazing macabre stop-motion animation short. Reminded me A LOT of the videogame Fran Bow in aesthetic.

Deseo Deseo - was the spanish-language Truth or Dare and a bit better and darker. Was ok, but didn't do a lot with its potential in the end.

Bong of the Living Dead - was fucking terrible despite a great name and premise of self-aware stoner nerds who've been planning for the zombie apocalypse their whole life actually running into the zombie apocalypse. The movie doesn't know what it wants to be and switches between silly and SERIOUS CHARACTER MOMENTS (with bad acting/writing) frequently. The most clever part of the whole film is one bit where all the stoners make their weapons and their attack plan to counter-attack the zombies outside their home at 6am the next morning, but being stoners they all oversleep and by the time they get outside the zombie apocalypse is over because everyone else in the neighborhood took down the zombies as well and they're like "fuck, we should've got up earlier". Then there's like a 20 min segment of living after the zombie apocalypse which is kinda original, but then the zombies come back and it just becomes generic bad zombie flick and tries to be s e r i o u s to its fail.

The Ranger - Was a pretty darn solid movie of a psycho slasher Rangers v punks in a forest. It's well directed, has some good action/gore, and manages to cycle the campy and serious well unlike the previous film. This was a good movie even if it's a bad representation of punk people (they're all shitty annoying stereotypes that like cops would think of when they think of BAD PUNK KIDS).

Schneeflocken (Snowflake) - Feels like what would happen if when Quentin Tarantino directed a Charlie Kaufman (in his heyday) script. This movie is nuts and weird and fucking awesome. Dunno what its availability is online, but would highly recommend tracking it down. It's a really good weird stylish criminal (and superhero?) film. The only bit I didn't like was it felt a bit too long but I was also tired af after 12+ hours of movie watching, so that might've just been me. But find this and check it out. It's a great watch.

There was a midnight showing of Zombie 3 afterwards, but me and my friends were falling asleep at that point so we had bail. Was a lot of fun though and definitely want to do more film festivals in the future.

I also watched Le Samouraï before Persona. I really liked the Jef character. Loner, stoic, and a man with a code. Makes me wish we'd see more films with such a central character.

Jean-Pierre Melville's direction was also just as meticulous as Jef himself. Wonderful scenes where a moment is held or a characters methods are shown fully instead of cutting away.

Probably when Jef is in the lineup.

He was meticulous about setting up his alibi but he still felt extremely exposed and yet still very confident in his work. It conveyed all this very well in that shot alone.

Nice write up Stro.

Prometheus will always be my most disappointing movie ever. I can't imagine a movie will ever top it. The fact that there is so much excellence in the film (set design, world building, acting, special effects) makes all the flaws seem even more glaring.

It still blows my mind that you tell a story where the protagonist doesn't have an arc. Where the antagonist is never fully revealed or explained!  How does that just get pushed to side in a major movie? Even the worst B-movies I've seen adhere to those story telling basics.

With all that said, the film could've been redeemed (for me) if Shaw had just crushed David's head at the end. It would've been a proper ending, it would've given Shaw some semblance of an arc.

Bohemian Rhapsody is PG-13 :zzz

Like I been saying since Cohen was fired, this has Disneyfied pap written all over it. :trumps

Shame because Malek is an inspired choice too.

You ever watch the masters of horror series tasty? It's like 98% trash but theres a couple episodes that stay with you. The first Tobe Hooper one and the Carpenter one are two that I still think about.

Nope! What's the good stuff?

When I get off work I’ll write you a list of what I remember.
