Oh man, went to my first film festival and it was intense. Was there 14 hours and saw 4 full length films and 2 hours of shorts. Was a horror film festival. One nice thing was a lot of the directors/writers/casts were there to do 15 min Q&As after each film.
Out of the short film block, Cerulia was an amazing macabre stop-motion animation short. Reminded me A LOT of the videogame Fran Bow in aesthetic.
Deseo Deseo - was the spanish-language Truth or Dare and a bit better and darker. Was ok, but didn't do a lot with its potential in the end.
Bong of the Living Dead - was fucking terrible despite a great name and premise of self-aware stoner nerds who've been planning for the zombie apocalypse their whole life actually running into the zombie apocalypse. The movie doesn't know what it wants to be and switches between silly and SERIOUS CHARACTER MOMENTS (with bad acting/writing) frequently. The most clever part of the whole film is one bit where all the stoners make their weapons and their attack plan to counter-attack the zombies outside their home at 6am the next morning, but being stoners they all oversleep and by the time they get outside the zombie apocalypse is over because everyone else in the neighborhood took down the zombies as well and they're like "fuck, we should've got up earlier". Then there's like a 20 min segment of living after the zombie apocalypse which is kinda original, but then the zombies come back and it just becomes generic bad zombie flick and tries to be s e r i o u s to its fail.
The Ranger - Was a pretty darn solid movie of a psycho slasher Rangers v punks in a forest. It's well directed, has some good action/gore, and manages to cycle the campy and serious well unlike the previous film. This was a good movie even if it's a bad representation of punk people (they're all shitty annoying stereotypes that like cops would think of when they think of BAD PUNK KIDS).
Schneeflocken (Snowflake) - Feels like what would happen if when Quentin Tarantino directed a Charlie Kaufman (in his heyday) script. This movie is nuts and weird and fucking awesome. Dunno what its availability is online, but would highly recommend tracking it down. It's a really good weird stylish criminal (and superhero?) film. The only bit I didn't like was it felt a bit too long but I was also tired af after 12+ hours of movie watching, so that might've just been me. But find this and check it out. It's a great watch.
There was a midnight showing of Zombie 3 afterwards, but me and my friends were falling asleep at that point so we had bail. Was a lot of fun though and definitely want to do more film festivals in the future.
