So Captain Marvel March - Avengers April - Spider-Man July.

Is Disney going to crash the money train straight into the wall or will they reach new heights?

?

They have been doing 3 movies a year for a while now.  Think they will push it put to 4.

The new audio mix, especially in atmos is great. The subway fight scene punches surprisingly hit hard on a good sub. It’s great.

"Endgame" lol, that's what they hid for six months?

i hope the first hour and a half is just bleak and horrible scenes of everyone suffering then Captain Marvel pops in so they can go deus ex machina Thanos like always with no fight scenes at all and it's the world's first $2 billion troll film

What surprised me about the Matrix is how well the tension builds.

If it was made today Neo would have to meet every challenge as a sort of game objective before moving on to the next challenge.
Say the jumping scene. In a blockbuster movie released this year we would've likely had scene after scene of Neo jumping until he nailed it. Only after meeting that challenge would he be able to continue to the next.
A clear path from point A to point B with challenges along the way. Perhaps he would split up with Trinity, but they would always have objectives A - B - C to complete.

In the Matrix it doesn't work that way. Plots are introduced at a rapid pace. Some characters are introduced seemingly important and then die quickly.
The movie doesn't take a lot of time explaining things. Sure you have Morpheus narrating how the Matrix came to be and all that. But events just happen and Neo and the others improvise as they learn the 'rules' of the Matrix.

Finally the movie doesn't hint heavily at a sequel. The ending is actually one of the shortest scenes. Neo is shot by Smith. Then he wakes up in 'another life' after Trinity kisses him as the oracle foretold.
In this new life he is 'The One' and he easily destroys Smith. The other agents run and from that point forward Neo broadcasts his message trying to free people and he's able to 'hack' the Matrix as he sees fit.
The movie ends in a statisfying way. Sure, a sequel could be made to show what happens next but it could've ended there as well.

One line in the film got me:
"1999, the peak of your civilisation"

Looking at what happened after 1999.... :-\

It makes more sense for this Thanos to be a farmer than comic thanos, since they inexplicably made him a sympathetic character.

Anna and the Apocalypse

This should have been good (at least if you like b movies and parody musicals).
It really should’ve worked. It would’ve been so easy to work.

But this movie is a mess & doesn’t work  :'(

Surprisingly the first 30 mins which is the pre-zombie part works the best and is cute and gets you hyped for the zombie musical. Some of the songs aren’t good, none are great but a few are fun. There’s an early santa sex school play song & a penguin fish rap that are legit funny.

But then the zombies show up and they completely.drop.the.ball
Like first extended action sequence vs zombies and there’s no song? Even though they’ve been singing every few mins until now? Like zombies show up and suddenly the musical is gone and it’s just a bad zombie flick with weak writing & directing and shallow characters. On the way to the end you still get a few songs but the ratio drops and they’re mostly bad outside a MJ x Grease style zombie killing song.

The problem with dropping the musical bits is the non-musical stuff is really really badly done. Feels like the film was by a music video guy who can’t direct normal bits.

Oh well :/

Also there was no death song where a character laments that they’ve been bitten in a soliloquy that plays on rhymes from an early song they sang but now in a somber tune.

Why aren’t these writers/directors as good as me :(

It's not something I saw recently, but if you are itching for a movie that's more  "classically Nic Cage", Between Worlds is kind of nuts.  Trailer makes it look like some dumb horror schlock, but it's actually deliciously Nic Cage-schlock.

Finally saw GET OUT.

I get the hype. It was solidly suspenseful, and the social notes were good. Lots of people saying how overblown it seemed but it didn't seem outside what I expected.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
People talked about how they didn't accept that the girlfriend is in on it. I don't see how anyone can iss that. It's made super obvious. I felt absolutely unsafe during the entire film. I was certain it would end in unrelenting tragedy.
[close]

Also watched Japan's I Am a Hero, based on the possibly-sentient zombie manga. I read a couple of the tankobon, and the movie is true to the general spirit of ironic nihilism from the source.

ok, finally watched The Raid 2
now I'm REALLY interested in seeing Apostle just because I wanna see Evan's style in something like that.
So Raid 2 was...fucking....long

like it's good! And it has some GREAT moments like fighting vs. the shounen anime bosses of BASEBALL MAN and BLIND HAMMER GIRL and then final boss dude and some good scenes throughout like hammers on a train and main dude fighting out of enemy car.

But I prefer the first movie because it's just tighter and more exciting. This one tries too hard to be a LONG ASS GANGSTA FLICK and it's not a bad one, but the mafia story stuff isn't particularly special. Got a little bored at times with the length. First one is basically just DREDD in an apartment building and works great. Also I liked the ending of the first one better.

With

spoiler (click to show/hide)
main dude and his brother beating the final boss mad dog in a fight together and getting out
[close]

Was satisfying.

Whereas in Raid 2

spoiler (click to show/hide)
it starts with killing his brother which kinda sucks and then ends with I guess they offered him a job with the yakuza and he says no so probably dies unless they let him walk away
[close]

Still a pretty good movie.

Not surprised, the writing seemed like the weakest link in Raid 2. Also could use an editor as well considering the length.

He's a producer and his brothers are writing it. Some producers can have a lot of input on a movie, especially if they aren't Executive Producers.

It's the same reason people are at all interested in the Alita movie or Terminator 6. Because Cameron is a producer and seems to be very involved with both.

I don't know how involved Gunn is, but I doubt it's simply lending his name.

roma is an astounding achievement, quite possibly a masterpiece. see it in the theaters if you can, i can't imagine a laptop screen or tv doing this film justice.

shoplifters wasn't what i was expecting. it's similar to other kore-eda films in theme and tone but departs radically when it comes to structure, where it's a film made entirely of vignettes. it's quite difficult to follow at times but if you focus too much on the details, you will lose sight of the films central focus, the human emotion.

Under the Silver Lake (2018):
Didn't expect the guy who made It Follows to follow that up with a critique of pop culture through some weird neo-noir about nothing lens but here we are. It's okay I guess. Don't know how I feel about this one.

2018 was kind of the year of absurd elements in movies huh
