Idk, the end part of Shang-Chi drops off, but I don’t think it’s as a bad as y’all are making it out to be. It’s just like normal popcorn MCU fair with Simu & Tony re-enacting FF Advent Children and then Mitsuzune vs something from Monhun.

Like it’s about the quality of a decent videogame movie. Watching it I was thinking hey finally someone made a decent live action monster hunter film.

If you don’t like MCU in general it’s bad and tropey, but for MCU I thought the end stuff was no worse than the entirety of Black Widow or a lot of other MCU flicks.

Everything until then makes up for it though.

I'm with you on this one. I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I expected that I would. It was also fun seeing the callbacks to the Mandarin character from iron Man 3.  I think I like that it felt very "un-Marvel" in a lot of ways, despite the cameos from existing characters.  I don't look at the character of Shang-Chi as being a fit for the Avengers in the comics, but at least this movie version will fit in with the way the movie ends.  This was much better and much more enjoyable than Black Widow was.

So maybe I'll like Eternals then?  Don't know, I'm not expecting to like it but maybe I'll be surprised with this one too.

I still would like to know who is making these character decisions for these movies. There are a lot of characters for them to pick from to turn into movie franchises and I just don't think some of these recent ones are going to work as well as the Avengers characters did.  I'm still looking very forward to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, but that's really about it. I wish they would just drop what they have plans to make going forward and get to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the like instead of all these C and D-list tier characters.

I guess they're somewhat hamstrung by not stepping on the toes of existing properties like the TV shows and not quite having all the rights. So they've spunked away the recognisable Inhumans, the Netflix street level crew, and all the cameos from Agents Of Shield like Ghost Rider (and also the legit :no1curr tv shows like hellstrom and runaways and cloak and dagger and shit)
But its crazy there's an Eternals film before an actual MCU Ruffalo-Hulk film

They have the Netflix characters back, I thought- one of them is confirmed to be in the next Spider-Man movie.

IIRC the reason there's nothing with the Hulk is that Universal still owns the rights for solo movies and Marvel is allowed to use the character if he's in other movies or TV shows.

Put on that Motley Crue bio The Dirt. I expected I'd switch off within 5 minutes or less, but that opening scene had me hooked. It's not a great film, or even a good film, but it's fun and it goes by quickly.

I don't think he's been underrated at all since at least Boogie Nights.

Hoffman playing Bannon or Trump?

 :shaking

I dunno, a Hollywood retelling of modern political history has zero appeal to me anymore. As a dumb teenager I was all about Oliver Stone but you grow up and realize it's mostly bullshit and narrative shortcuts or if you're being generous a played out morality tale that you've seen a hundred times before.

Like, with Bannon or Trump in particular, even as someone who goes out of my way to never watch cable or broadcast news, through the few current event podcasts that I listen to regularly, I've already heard the particulars of most of the stories over and over again for the past five years. I don't need to sign up for Showtime and see 10 hours of Brendan Gleeson wear a Trump wig for some smug Hollywood writer's idea of a takedown.

(With Bannon, Errol Morris already did a very slick and entertaining one-on-one documentary a few years ago. People shit on it because he wasn't didactic enough but it was great seeing Bannon expose himself as a piece of shit in his own words for 90 minutes.)

Like, remember Christian Bale playing Cheney? Brolin as Dubya? Does anyone pull those out and revisit those movies regularly after they come out?  God, I think they have Clive Owen playing Clinton on FX this year. I can't take the second-hand embarrassment of that.

Based on the trailer, i'd probably go for Green Knight, but it could very well be more A24 wankery.

New LG soundbar arrived, it sounds absolutely fantastic.

In movies like Dunkirk I can hear the German planes flying overhead and each individual splash as the English jump in the water  :whew

I got the LG DSN8YG, known as the SN8 outside of Europe it got some awards and good reviews and performs well for the $800 price tag it normally has.
https://www.lg.com/us/sound-bars/lg-sn8yg-sound-bar
https://www.techhive.com/article/3566075/lg-sn8yg-soundbar-review.html

But it was on sale for Black Friday, from ~699 Euro to 329 Euro.
Probably such a good deal because this is a 2020 model and there's already a 2021 update with some additional sound modes and an updated chip.
The main differences seem to be that the 2020 model only does Google Assistant while the 2021 version has Alexa, Spotify and some other apps built-in as well.
Plus they've added dedicated sports and gaming modes.

Those features would also be nice but it's hard to find a better soundbar at ~300 Euro.

then I looked at the surround systems, thought about how expensive they are and the hassle with setting up speakers  :angryjoe went with a good 2.1 set and just turn the volume up to hear everything, fuck the neighbors  :)

I've encountered a lot of people who haven't seen the modern 'classics'.

It's a weird list. You expect Goodfellas to be one there but it isn't, yet they somehow included Gangs of New York.

Watched Layer Cake on Netflix, still holds up with Craig as not yet Bond but somewhat of the same attitude and style he had in Casino Royale.
I believe it was the film that played a part in getting him the role.

I also like the very creative cuts that Vaughn played around with and became his signature style with Kingsman.
Interesting how a lot of things came from this movie even though it isn't that well known.

Surely this isn't a ranking right? The Dark Knight being the second greatest movie of all time? It's not even the second greatest Batman film.

It's a very specific list for a time and type of film watcher I think, like I've seen a lot of them but also I'd think a lot of my real life friends would have too, but various internet types have certainly seen almost all of them. Many of the pre-1980's films on the list feel like ones you'd watch because they have lots of canonized history to them more than because you're someone who watches older films.

Finally, I will never not contend that Little Miss Sunshine is a very bad film with one good line and that everyone has been gaslighting me about it being otherwise for over a decade now.

No Bergman, no Dreyer, no Bunuel, no Bresson, no Ozu, no Tarkovsky... and this is just to mention the big names.
I wouldn't do a 100 list without something like Landscape in the Mist or Spirit of the Beehive.
But then you have shit like Little Miss Sunshine and Green Mile.  :-\
Also Mary and Max was alright, but there are certainly better examples of prestige animation out there.
Hell, i'd even take Anomalisa over it.

Also since you put a Cassavetes, you have to go with Woman Under The Influence, come on...  :doge
And you choose 2 Scorsese, and you go with Gangs of New York and The Departed?  :lol Taxi Driver was too obvious?

At first glance I assumed it was the IMDB's top user-rated, which after re-checking places Dark Knight at #4 and similarly Shawshank at #1, though otherwise the list seems just an arbitrary popular selection put into a blender.

Oof, that is a painfully “basic bitch” list but any list that aims to be even a little authoritative instead of personal is a fool’s errand and doomed from the start. Everyone brings their own baggage to a movie, which is what makes watching them great.

Also Ridley Scott on today’s Maron podcast was fantastic. Dude has no patience for bullshit or false humility.

Oh yeah, i'd have The Belly of an Architect up in there. :-*

But seriously, i see the usefulness of these kind of lists as a way to provide a general groundwork to show what cinema is and can be.
A list you can watch and, once you're done, have a decently comprehensive idea of all styles (ideally at its greatest) and... diverse voices.

Listing up a bunch of Hollywood movies from barely 3 decades, with a handful of foreign darlings thrown in for pity, is really robbing people from discovering how deep and wide the medium can go.

Also why i don't think doing "the IMDB top 100" is a good way to go about it, either.

Last Night in Soho

Everyone said the first 2/3rds are good and last 1/3rd is a miss.

Yeah, the first 2/3rds are stylish fun Edgar Wright really entertaining and interesting film. The last 1/3rd just...isn't very good. The plot concept for the whole thing is fine, but he definitely flubbs the execution of the last 1/3rd. Could've been a great flick if he pulled that off. As is, it's still worth a watch but a bit weak.

Little Miss Sunshine I guess is there as a forerunner for the 'mumblecore' indie bittersweet comedic drama about post modern families that has become bread and butter for the likes of the Duplass Brothers, and given that context, yeah it's okay.

Having said that, I'm not gonna lie, the reveal of Olives choice of music and dance routine and costume had me laughing so hard I was struggling to breathe when I first saw it, and is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever seen on film, just from the sheer level of inappropriateness, when kids pageants are famously skeevy as fuck anyway.

Paying a dvd of a movie you don't even know if it's good, 100€, would be like buying a GPU right now, i just couldn't live with it.

Venom was a mess but I liked it more than the first one.  The Eddie/venom dynamic was fun and the rest felt like a bad 2000's superhero movie.  It's a real shame Sony has this.

I'm going to wait for crypto to tank so I can get a 2nd hand GPU at 50% MSRP

Potato got you, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a video rip tucked away somewhere in the internet archive.  I’ve found an obscure movie or two there sometimes when nowhere else had it.
