Wall-E

surprisingly, i loved this.  i used to think pixar movies were for distinguished mentally-challenged fellows (literally) and stoners, but this is actually a neat little story. also worth noting is that the depth of some of the earth environments is insane

Crank Hight Voltage

Loved the first one, enjoyed the sequel as well.  The movie is basically "let's throw everything we can think of at the wall and hope 50%+ sticks", but enough of it is lol material that you get 90 mins of entertainment and lots of laughs and the ridiculous-ness of it all.  Statham is a lot of fun to watch being crazy and the references to everything from videogames to j-pop were great.  They definitely did not screw up the sequel.  If you liked the original, go see this.

Just watched Meet The Robinsons, which was delightful, and Låt Den Rätte Komma In, which had an excellent script and atmosphere ruined by god awful youth actors and typical Swedish arty farty direction.

The Devil's Rejects (Blu-Ray) - This is the 2nd time I've seen it and it holds up. There is a lot of detail Rob's movies. While I didn't hate Halloween I'd like to see him work on something original again. I dislike being 'horrified' except when it's as compelling as this.

Killshot - Acting aside, the movie is fairly unremarkable. Still worth watching if you're a fan of Mickey Rourke.

Notorious - 90's nostalgia. Some of the casting is a bit off, but I thought it was at least a "TV movie" quality biopic. Anthony Mackie nailed Pac's laugh in that one club scene. Rental.

The Spirit - The end credits were probably the highlight of the film* barring the eye candy, of course. Frank has good taste in women. (*I actually didn't realize that was Aguilera singing until I'd read the credits)

Synecdoche New York - The most depressing movie I've ever seen. I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman's work but this is one of the only films of his I doubt I'd watch again.

Stuck - One of the most bizarre thrillers of recent memory. If you feel like something different give it a try. Feels a bit like a genre film of the 70's.

This is England

I thought that the film really captured how it felt to grow up in England during the early 80s and how they felt about Falklands/Thatcher. Great performance from the 11 year old main character and the dude who played Tommy from Snatch. Good film

Crank 2 High Voltage

I didn't like the 1st one, but this one was a huge surprise, it rocked my pants off, seriously, insane shit happens in this movie, insane and hilarious, it was amazing. Seeing this movie was sort of a revelation. I suggest everyone to see this one.

Ong Bak 2

Shit story, but who cares, Tony Jaa directed this one, and he actually has a good eye i must say, the movie looks really good, and some of the best shot fights i've seen in a long time, and the choreo is amazing. Seriously some of the best fighting sequences i've ever seen in a movie, and i've seen stacks of them.

For martial arts movie fans, only.

Daredevil: Directors Cut

There was like only one movie out there, that i knew of, that actually had a directors cut version that made it massively different. That movie was Kingdom of Heaven, which really becomes quite the amazing film in that version.

Every other version out there, many directors cuts, many unrateds etc, end up amounting to the same shit overall, never being different enough. I've heard through the years how this was not the case with Daredevil, but i never bought into it. Well, i finally gave it a chance, and damn, this version is much much better than the original, much bigger too, it has quite a ton of new stuff, it really fleshes out the character, and doesn't focus so much on the relationship with electra.

This is just another one of those examples of why Fox is the worst movie company in the world, and just like it was the case with Kingdom of Heaven, this is the version that should've been released in cinemas, and maybe it would've had a shot at being recognized as a great 1st effort with the character. Mark Steven Johnson is no prodigy, and the movie weakest links all trace back to the director, that didn't know how to orchestrate an action sequence, and didn't have the greatest eye for visual artistry, but overall, it becomes a really solid and enjoyable movie. Shit, i think this version would've gotten a chance at a sequel.

Definitely recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in the genre, and in the character, even if you didn't like the 90 min Fox butchered version.

I'd add to that:

-Blade Runner [Scott just can't get a break]
-Brazil [studio cut is WAY different, though it wasn't actually released in theaters]

It really is a visual treat, but if fails in nearly ever other aspect as a film, in my opinion.

17 Again - I'm suffering from Zac Efron oversaturation. This was fucking horrible.

Gattaca - Finally decided to watch the blu-ray I bought months ago. Amazing film. I can't really believe that this has slipped right past my radar for 12 years.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - Damon's face is cringe worthy, but it's still a great movie. And whatever happened to Gwyneth Paltrow? She, like, fell off the face of the Earth after the 90s (besides The Royal Tenenbaums which was great).

The Wind That Shakes the Barley - Won the golden palm a few years back. It's kind of depressing, but having Irish lineage I was interested in the subject matter.

The Motorcycle Diaries - A thoughtful and funny script, combined with a solid cast and breathtaking cinematography. Not as exciting as "Che" but just as interesting.

I haven't seen the theater cut, but I did see the DC because I heard it was actually a good film.

Man, if that was a good film I would hate to see the theatrical cut.  Although I think it's mainly the fault of Ben Affleck.  I mean it's really hard to make a good movie with his smug awful acting in every scene.

black circle boys?

evil is as evil does?

Quote
The movie shifts into Kyle's new life in a new town and school. It becomes a traditional juvenile delinquency teen pic, throwing trite plot elements seen in most similar films from "Rebel Without a Cause" to "The Craft." Inevitably Kyle falls in with the bad kids, which in this case is a group of headbanging metal thrashers who call themselves the Black Circle Boys. Its leader Shane (Eric Mabius) is uncompromising, sociopathic, and slitheringly persuasive. The Black Circle boys turn out to be more than a fledgling metal band, and Kyle finds himself uncontrollably immersed in dangerous occult rituals and violent antisocial escapades.

to its credit, this was made two years before columbine

I'd put it above slumdog and milk pretty easily. Rourke is great and the wrestling scenes are brutal at times. The necroblood match is just painful to watch. Great ending, too.

Oh and I agree with the This is England praise. I think I have some thoughts on it in this thread many, many, many pages back.

So I watched 'Bananaz', the Gorillaz documentary...

is Damon Albarn on meth or something?  There are several points during the docu where he (and sometimes Jamie Hewlett too) is shown all cut up and beat to shit, near the end he's even missing one of his front teeth, and there is absolutely no explanation for it.  It isn't even acknowledged.

I'm so sick of the state of the horror genre. A bunch of kids....a bunch of kids act like punks, dude get's in a fight, kills the most dangerous oponent in the room, and then pussies out to a bunch of kids? Those kids are fucking up with your life, and you go soft at the time you need to do damage? Of course, just a bunch of bad decisions.

LA Confidential

Cheated out of an Oscar by Titanic.  Not saying much but the acting (especially Russel Crowe) and the great writing really do make this one of the best crime films I've ever watched.  The only complaint I can think of is that the ending was a bit too much of a happy ending.

The dialogue is terrible and some of the CGI has aged horribly. Outside of that, it's still a pretty decent flick.

It is fun and sorta crazy for most of the movie, the transformation is amazing, but the star of the show is the final sequence, where it becomes just hilarious, i love it. The scene where the cars are crashing, is just, pure awesome.

It's not that bad. It's pretty much High School teenage drama, with a coat of fantasy. It's so harmless, and so aimed at the female audience, that after a bit, it's hard to hate on it.

It was pretty decent. It's at least worth a watch for all the Ricky Ross/CIA stuff. Also, I loled when the Arizona sheriff claimed that when he visited Amsterdam the streets were littered with the bodies of drug users impeding traffic.

shit sucks and any attempts to call twilight "typical women's entertainment" feels like borderline misogyny.

Frost Nixon

Wow, this movie isn't compelling or interesting at all until the actual interview takes place, and even then I couldn't help but feel a sense of biding time, waiting for the movie to end so I could watch the real interview on youtube. Frank Langella is amazing as Nixon, which is another positive for the movie. But that's really it. The main character Frost isn't interesting in the least, and the character development is kinda mushed/rushed; it truly feels like the film has little to no purpose until the first sit down between Nixon and Frost.

2.5/5
