I honestly do not understand why people hated it so much. Better/More action sequences, hotter main chick than Eva Whocares, not 40 minutes longer than it needed to be, and overall better cinematography.

QoS was dogshit compared to Casino Royale.

Hey Willco, have you seen a film called Martys. Apparently it's so terryfying, people didn't just walk out of the cinema but some had to be carried out. Apparently Kermode had to use all his willpower to stay in the theatre to the end.

that film got a recent cover story in rue morgue, but it didn't really sound like it would appeal to me and i've read elsewhere that it just reads as a 4 movies jammed together, one j-horror, one torture porn, one religious horror but excels at none of these taking on the shallow qualities of the films

Well it's certainly divided critics and audiences alike. Some critics' say it's a modern-day horror masterpiece, others say it's torture-porn garbage with fancy writing. Some even take a swipe at France for letting this film through lol.

From a review:

Quote
Martyrs is, according to Laugier, the “anti-Hostel”, its savagery devoid of glee and its scalpel scraping at mind and soul as much as bruised, flailed body
Well kudos to the director for trying to be different, I gues.

But the fact that Kermode, himself a horror film fanatic, edorses it, makes me very intrigued.

Casino Royale was a lot better than Quantum of Solace.

CR is better, no doubt, but I dint think the gap is massive.

I didn't like QoS that much the first time I saw it, thought it was way weaker than CR. When I saw it the second time I liked it a lot more (although still not as much as CR).

Considering Quantum of Solace was average at best, and i mean, at best, i would say the gap between QoS and CR is pretty damn big.

If I would place it with all the Bond films I wouldn't put it that low. I'd go:

From Russia With Love
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Casino Royale
The Living Daylights
Thunderball
Dr. No
The Spy Who Loved Me
Goldfinger
For Your Eyes Only
GoldenEye
Quantum of Solace
Licence to Kill
Live and Let Die
Diamonds Are Forever
The Man With The Golden Gun
The World is Not Enough
Tomorrow Never Dies
You Only Live Twice
Moonraker
Octopussy
A View To A Kill
Die Another Day

Casino Royale was all around kick ass.  You Know My Name was awesome; Craig was an awesome, different style of bond; Eva Green was hot; great Sony Ericsson product placement; and awesome line where Bond tells Le Chiffre "Scratch me balls."

QoS was boring.  The only thing it really got right was having a new hot chick around, except this time Bond was a blubbering pussy who didn't have time to bang her, let alone do anything interesting in the movie.  The one cool thing he did in the entire movie was flip that guy by accelerating the motorcycle; rest of the movie was a bore.  Actually, the second cool part of the movie is that when the main villain fought Bond, he was just some nerdy guy who sucked worse than Bond did.  It was like they had a brilliant plan to make everything as boring as possible only to say "ha! see, it was boring because the characters themselves are losers!" in that one scene.

I don't get why people think that any Bond movie should be held to a high standard.  QOS was watchable but every Bond movie is just teenage boy fantasies with as much sex and explosions as possible.  At best, a Bond movie could be a middle of the road action movie.

CR had didn't have interesting character development or amazing plot twists so I'm guessing that that's why Bond fans loved it so much.  They assume that it had a great story, or was deep, or something.  Sad.

I just watched QoS for the first time yesterday, and I agree it's not awful but also not Casino Royale awesome.

It seemed like the movie kept drifting into being an old-school Bond flick which I think they didn't want, but instead of offering something else, they just took the movies balls away and figured that would suffice as an update for the *new* Bond.

Goldeneye is tons better than QoS.

QoS was a clumsy mess. Story and character development were shit. Plane sequence was the most boring action sequence i've seen in recent memory, i wanted to fast forward that shit.

Badass villains, awesome bond, cheesy but awesome action...of course, directed by Martin Campbell, better score, and an amazing theme.

QoS is a Bourne wannabe that takes itself way too serious, has shit villains, a bond that is more machine than man, and boring action for the most part. Shit score and theme.

Its totally not though. When you rewatch, you see how surprisingly simple and straightforward it is. I was baffled when I saw it the first time too, and I thought they were jumping from place to place for no reason, but thats not really the case. It follows a logical progression from scene to scene, locale to locale.

If you hate the movie, thats fine, no problems there, lots of people share your opinion. But its nowhere near as "random" or nonsensical as people claim it is.

Also, Goldeneye is the most overrated Bond movie.

Yes, it is. Its just as cheesey and formulaic as the previous 2 decades of Bond movies that preceeded it, yet people put it on a pedestal (often because it was their first Bond movie, and they're wearing their nostalgia glasses), while ragging on the Bond movies of the 70s and 80s which are pretty much of the same calibre. Hence, it is overrated. Im not calling it bad, but given far too much praise.

What is QoS if not a Bond installment that is clearly in the middle of an identity crisis? Don't understand why you defend it so much. It's not good. Plain and simple.

I defend it because it is good. Its entertaining, the character moments hit the mark, Daniel Craig owns the role now, the writing is well above average Bond fare, the pacing is superb, and its stylish as hell and beautifully shot. It also delivers a satisfying conclusion to the arc that began for Bond in CR. Plain and simple, as you said.

dude, i fucking loved it.

there are two endings btw:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the us ending ends with her getting out (in the car, apparently), the other, real ending ends with her waking up right after that scene--she's obviously been dreaming or whatever--and the camera starts zooming out with all the creatures closing in on her. and she sees her dead daughter.
[close]

there were some really great jump-out-of-your-seat moments.

i really find myself liking horror movies like this one--bunch of people go the middle of nowhere, get chased by fucked up creatures.
what other movies are there that are like this?

from the same director, there's also dog soldiers and doomsday. the trailers for both look interesting.
