Well, out of them all, I guess I'd go with Raging Bull personally, but a lot of people will tell you Goodfellas.

But I think The Aviator is one of the better movies I've seen all decade.  Shit was good.

Its definitely my favorite biopic (yes, I like it more than Raging Bull), but I dont know if it particulary stounds out in the decade for me.

I liked the Departed more by the 3rd time i watched it.

I guess i stopped comparing it to Infernal Affairs. Which is the better film.

My biggest problem with The Departed is how sloppy it is. Shit could have used a LOT of editing, and been so much better. There are so many scenes that serve no purpose whatsoever. Most of them involving Jack chewing scenery. Which, while hilarious, stalled the movie more than once.

I liked The Departed quite a bit, but the editing, like Solo said was sloppy.

I LOVED the ending. It was something you didn't really expect and were forced to watch even if you didn't want to.

Even though I had seen Infernal Affairs and knew the fate of Leo's character, I still just about shat my pants when he gets shot coming out of the elevator the first time I saw TD in theatres. Shock total  :lol

I was shocked because it was Leo getting shot in the head. Leo...

I was enraged with the ending though, and with the overall hollywodization of the story. And the editing was weird, like you mentioned.

Came back from Coraline, just now. Awesome movie that kept the obnoxious 3D effects to a minimum. The details in the set pieces amazed me and I absolutely love the cute mannerisms and the caricatured look of the puppets.

Effing A.  The Departed was 50 gotdamn minutes longer then Infernal Affairs, and added nothing to the plot and very little in terms of character development.  It did add a lot of amusing profanity, but that doesn't really justify nearly an hour of extra anything.

My best memory about The Departed was talking with a teacher about how distinguished mentally-challenged it was to have a rat at the end of the movie.
It was alright

The Wrestler

It was pretty great.  Rourke was good in it; Marissa Tomei was hot in it; the daughter was ACTING in it.

dude, you'd be all over it if it'd won oscars smh

There are tons of oscar nominees/winners that I hate.

Across the Universe was just plain painfully bad, Mamma Mia is more watchable musical than it!

Crash had A LOT of backlash from winning, it was everywhere. Slumdog's backslash is amongst the fringes, a very very very select few. Hell, I can't think of a movie as universally loved as Slumdog in years.

The Wrestler deserved more awards, for sure.  The Oscars were more political this year than they've been in a long while.

How does that even make sense? Crash was a overly sentimental movie that was made to play at hollywood's liberal race guilt with lots of A list actors to win awards. Slumdog was a movie that was barely lucky to get made, has no stars, and nearly was released straight to dvd and was all but written off for oscars up until december (everyone though button, the real oscar bait had it in the bag). Not comparable films at all.

You may hate both but I cant see a single similar thing between them, other than a hell of a lot of people hated Crash and barely anyone hated Slumdog outside nerdlings on the internets.

Oh and if the oscars were political then Milk would have won.

yeah, The Wrestler was a lot better than Slumdog.

like, I can tell you that the only bad part about the movie was his daughter, and wasn't so much the character there, it was that she was a shitty actress.

No, that's not really true.  Both awards Milk won were surrounded by better nominees.  If this wasn't the year after Pro 8, neither would've won.

And I have problems with Penn now, more so than I used to.  He stole the award the year the Murray deserved it, and this year was the same case but with Rourke.

That argument makes no sense. Why not give best pic to Milk since the oscars were "all about" politics this year? Penn's performance has received universal praise, as has Rourke's. No matter who won there would be disagreement

The thing about Penn's performance is that, ultimately, it's not but a serious exercise in acting. Seriously, yes it's great, but what did it do for you? It's another bio role, it's another part where the best thing the actor does is transform itself.

Rourke's role was more about living it, and you sense it, he doesn't have easy things like quirks to hang on to, not he's acting was all about transmitting emotion, living it, making it look real.

I see rourke in wrestler, and it makes an impact in me, i can feel his pain at times. I see Penn in milk, and i'm like "Well, he does act really goddamn gay." And that's all.

There will be another acting performance like Penn in milk in the next years, time and time again.

Of course politics played a part - it's the Oscars. I just take offense to the idea that Penn's win was 100% politics; if that was the case, the film would have won best picture.

Good to see Solo and Cheebs annihilating the idea that Slumdog was premeditated "oscar bait"  ::)

Couldn't finish Forgetting Sarah Marshal, so I watched Training Day instead. I can't believe that (a) the movie is eight years old and (b) I've never seen it until now. How PD of me.

I enjoyed the movie, but I was disappointed with some of the contrived plot points. For example, it was an amazing coincidence that the girl Hoyt stopped from being raped also happened to be the cousin of the man paid to kill Hoyt. And Alonzo's carefully planned and highly contingent set-up of Jake Hoyt was very contrived. Since Alonzo needs the money by the end of the day, what happens if Hoyt refuses to bend his ethics right from the start, derailing everything?

Hell, Alonzo was contrived and over-the-top. I was, wrongly, expecting more of a morality tale involving a jaded police-officer's means-ends reasoning gone bad. But that wasn't the case; Alonzo's just a self-interested sociopath, though an entertaining one.

Hey, sincerely, thanks for a review of a movie everyone here already saw 10 years ago.

1. The title of this thread isn't the "new movies you've seen" thread, it's The new and improved "Movies you've seen recently" thread. I watched Training Day recently--like ten minutes ago recently.
2. It wasn't a review: it was a small impression with a critique of a character and two plot points and
3. Go fuck yourself.
