Yeah, I think a conventional, more rewarding ending would have felt good - and almost righteous.  But the film had balls, like Walt, and sacrificed cliche Hollywood shenanigans for a truly great ending.

I don't wanna derail the thread but 'Good Night, and Good Luck' and 'Austin Powers: International Man of
Mystery' are both on tv tonight.

I haven't seen either, so which one should I watch, 'bore? Help me make a choice.

Edit: Man, it's like George Clooney night on BBC2, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is on straight after Good Night, Good Luck.

You've never watched Austin Powers?  That's required viewing!

Good Night and Good Luck is also incredibly well-done, but keep in mind it's a small-scale period thriller, so make sure you're into that kind of thing.

Hmm, when you said small scale period drama, it reminded me of Frost/Nixon. Not that I don't like it, it wasn't that interesting.

So, I guess I'll watch Austin Powers then :).

Death Sentence.

There's some stupid shit happening here and there, but overall it was a really fun revenger flick. Cool camera work too.

So I watched 'Good Night, And Good Luck' on tv last night instead of Austin Powers. I have to say, I liked it better than Frost/Nixon. I hadn't realised Frank Langella was in this movie too, that was a pleasent suprise - though I think he overdid the voice impersonation in Frost/Nixon.

Beyond the Mat is required viewing for any fan of wrestling in the 80s, and even if you were never into wrestling, it'll make you think twice before you mock it for "not being real."

It did okay on Rotten Tomatoes:

My Bloody Valentine 3D

I'm not a big horror geek, and I'm usually not into slasher movies (and I can't stand torture porn), and with all that being said, I very much enjoyed MBV3D.  Goawrsh DANG!  It was a fun experience.  As a 2D movie, it would have still been kinda decent, but the 3D-ness really helped make it a lot more fun then it ordinarily would have been.  I fear for the day when every big-budget flick is filled with gimmicky 3D effects, but I will gladly take a modestly made and more than competent slasher film with lots of fun exploitation bits in 3D.  Something about a flying mandible coming right at you is just so much fun, a perversion of high technology I'll gladly embrace.  That the film itself is an earnestly made throwback to disreputable 80's horror cinema only increases the charm.

and at this point, I'm also looking very much forward to Final Destination 4 in 3D.  I can't wait for some more virtual splatter in my face.

Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (1994)

So outrageous it becomes grossly entertaining, and hilarious. Like Coppola's Dracula is very surreal with lots of bright colors and some dramatic acting that seems more apt for a play than a movie. De Niro is pretty disappointing as Frankenstein but I dunno if it's solely his fault, or the director's lack of vision. Frankenstein is supposed to be a child like monstrosity, at least initially. Well here, he learns how to walk in one of the most homoerotic scenes I've ever seen

(3:40-4:30)  :lol is that De Niro's dick, or just a prop

And right after that he's ready to take on the world. Sure he can't talk/read, but he dresses himself and knows how to hide from mobs wtf. Yet from the point he learns how to walk to the point where he learns how to speak/read you never get the impression that De Niro is portraying the character any different. The mannerisms are the same...hell you can even hear his accent.

So yea...like Dracula, this is pretty flawed; but despite the flaws I like a lot of Dracula whereas Frankenstein is very spotty. But it gets props for featuring one of the most hilarious death scenes ever

(7:10-7:40)  :lol :lol :lol

Resident Evil: Extinction.

Well it's still not brilliant, but oddly I find RE is getting better with each iteration.  Maybe by the tenth film they'll make something awesome.  Getting rid of the writer would be a good start.

Quarantine.

I saw Rec, and the only good thing about REC were the final 10 mins.

I was waiting for Quarantine to fix some of the absolute dumb shit that happens during REC, but no luck, it's basically the same movie, but this time in English i guess.

I don't understand how knowing about the virus, these suckers still aren't shooting people, i mean you have this niga and this cracka with guns, and they don't do shit, and then the black dude, after the lil bitch bites her mother, still doesn't shoot her, gets bitten, etc for the rest of the movie.

Fuck dumb people, seriously. You have a gun, start shooting, and if you know what's going on, how about you stop worrying about infected motherfuckers?

Horrible movie. One day they will make an horror movie where the main characters aren't complete dipshits, and Hollywood will be taken by surprise.

Joint Security Area (Korean film):

Great movie, I watched it together with a Korean guy who already did his service and he said it's a beautiful fantasy. I would reccomend this to ya'll.
it was a huge hit in South Korea.  I'm just wondering if he commented any further on what parts were particularly ludicrous.  I wouldn't imagine that in real life that...

the North and South would have as much cooperation as they did in the film.  Or did he mean it was a beautiful fantasy because it was an affecting movie that probably couldn't ever actually happen

Dano gets overlooked because of how powerful the Lewis performance is, but I thought Dano was amazing. It was a dead on portrayal of hypocritical evangelical cretins.

Yes great performances.

But Lewis is what made me watch the movie a second time, and he is what will make me watch the movie again along the years.

I don't think it's as good as No Country though. I've seen that movie like 5 times. For someone who's a huge fan of the directing aspect of movies, No Country was amazing for me.

There Will be blood was amazing on another level to me, and yes, mainly because of the performances.

I have always contested that not only is he the most overrated director in the past twenty years, but that his fans are totally insufferable and his only decent film is Boogie Nights.  Which, by the way, falls apart in the third act, but is an enjoyable romp none the less.

And while I think No Country for Old Men was the Coen Bros. most impressive film on a technical level, the film suffers in the end and ultimately doesn't do it for me.  I'm willing to concede that to personal preference rather than shoddy screenwriting or filmmaking, though.

My two favorite films of 2007 got virtually no awards recognition, but I'm okay with that, because both received the Federman Award of Excellence in Repeat Viewings While J.O.'ing!

I think it's mostly excellent until the end, when it becomes dry and ultimately unsatisfying in its conclusion.  I also think the casting of Tommy Lee Jones is probably what wound up ruining the experience for me.  The movie is essentially put on his shoulders at the finish line and he just does not have the gravitas to pull it off.

Javier Bardem deserves all the accolades he received for his role, as does Brolin.  It's odd that Josh Brolin went from irrelevant in Hollywood to one of its best actors within the span of a year.

By the way, I'm not actually advocating that Michael Bay win an Oscar - maybe for most gratuitous cleavage shots in a PG-13 film, but that's it.  Transformers is a fun popcorn flick, whereas Zodiac and the Assassination of Jesse James are legitimately great films snubbed by a pretentious and snobby Academy.

Where do I insinuate Zodiac is a "popcorn" flick; it's more entertaining, that doesn't make it a popcorn flick. It's almost 3 hours long and you've got to pay attention to understand the plot/case, but it's fascinating to me, and more captivating than TWBB in general for instance which has some pacing problems. I own the movie; I don't own either No Country or TWBB.

I still think Transformers was badly botched, and not just in the usual Michael Bay, lowest-common-denominator, everything-is-obvious-and-kinda-sucks way.

It's a movie ostensibly about giant robots, but they use the Roland Emmerich template and play it like a worldwide crisis response flick (ID4, Godzilla, Day After Tomorrow).

By the time the final battle takes place, I should be completely hyped up for the robots to finally go at it.  Instead they've been relegated to comic relief and macguffin hunts.  Even if the robot fights hadn't sucked, they would have suffered from a total failure to build anticipation.

Look at the Hulk.  You don't need a great movie or a big artistic statement to get this stuff right.

My main beef was the structure.  In a movie about Transformers the Autobots assembled one hour into the film, and the Decepticons assembled 1.5 hours in.  They could have safely jettisoned the first 45 minutes of the film.

Then when you finally get to see big-ass robots fighting in the last 30 minutes or so, it's not very good and even I (a man) had trouble figuring out which Transformer was which.

The best part of the film was probably the first 45 minutes if it would have been in a romantic comedy about a bumbling idiot trying to nail a hot chick.

The movie has obvious screenplay flaws, but I really dig anything that had giant robots fighting or flying or fighting and flying.  I'm a sucker for military porn too.  Your initial rebuttal to my first review was probably accurate - something about lowered expectations.  That said, I love giant things destroying other giant things.

Completely disagree. I love the ending, and i love Tommy.

And the Transformers rocked. Even Shia was cool in it, that's the power of Michael Bay.

Edward Scissorhands

I realise everyone has seen it, but it's years since I saw it and I'm not sure I ever saw it all the way through.  So anyway, it's awesome.
