Has she been in a decent movie since The Others?

That movie where she plays Diane Arbus is pretty good, but probably only if you like Diane Arbus.  And from Diane Arbus, the conversation could go back to Kubrick. . .

and yeah, Die Hard is the best action movie ever.  Along with Blade Runner and a few others, it's on a list of blu-ray I'm rewatching when I get the JVC 5.1 thing in the mail.

While I can understand why people would find the movie funny, I can't wrap my head around why anyone would honestly think Cruise was funny - at all - in that movie. The movie was forced, but that role went beyond forced. And everyone knows I love me some Tom Cruise but seriously, what the fuck

Tropic Thunder had it's lulz and its dullz. The showing of the Simple Jack trailer wasn't really funny, but the Vietnamese making him reenact it for their pleasure was very funny.

that's why i never fully watch trailers anymore--they give away way too much. red band ones are even worse, i think.

but yeah, that scene with the kid look better in the trailer.

i went in with pretty low expectations because some people--like beelze, who has excellent taste--hated it, but eh, i laughed.

can anyone name some more -funny- comedies that came out last year? the only other one that i saw--and really, really loved--is pineapple express.

I really didn't think Gran Torino had clunker performances.  Are you sure you're not confusing foreign accents with bad acting, Cajole?  Considering outside Clint's family, that none of the characters were supposed to be born and bred Americans, I thought the awkward English was appropiate.

It is expected that Eastwood would outshine the other actors.  Besides, a lot of them seem to be FOB characters, so they can be expected to have a subpar performance.  The main point of the movie is Eastwood.  The other characters are just there to prevent it from being a monologue.

My only real grievance with Gran Torino is that Eastwood's use of racial slurs bordered on comedic every time, even an instances when he wasn't supposed to be funny.  This isn't really his fault - it stays true to his character (and yes, people like this exist in the Midwest), but rather on how anyone under thirty was raised.  So much of the stuff that flies out of his mouth is so socially unacceptable that I think our first natural inclination is to find it funny, especially since he does not mean it maliciously throughout much of the movie.

I liked Gran Torino, but it's a pretty simple movie. If it wasn't for Clint Eastwood it would've been a straight to dvd movie.

Highlights include the korean dude with two thumbs in one hand, and the ending.

Agree on the former, disagree on the latter.  Eastwood's performance certainly drives the film, but he's the lead.  That's like saying Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford is a straight to home video release (although I wish the last one was).  It goes without saying if you don't have a compelling main character, any film sucks.

I think it's an example of excellent filmmaking that he was able to take a story that you could probably write in two sentences and craft an entertaining story about cultures and morals.  It was also one of his rare modern directoral efforts that didn't feel like he was overreaching and aimed for the simple goal of crafting an entertaining yarn.  I really appreciated that and it came off as geniune as a result.

I loved Gran Torino.

At first, I was so shocked at the ending, I wasn't sure if I liked it; it left me feeling empty just after that scene. But later, I realised that I was just angry at the ending for what happened to Walt - I found, I loved the old basterd. This hasn't happened to me with any other film ever, so for that, much kudos.
