i watched Valkyrie the other day. I really enjoyed it.

I was a bit meh about it.

Tom Cruise did a good job and whatever, but you know the ending. And it's not a cool ending. So the buildup to it is always hard to stomach.

Tom Cruise was WAAYYY better in Tropic Thunder. :bow2

I watched the first 10 minutes of Twilight, mainly on fast forward pausing at certain places.  In the two scenes I stopped to see, I heard the word Chillax come from some asian kid, and a random unpopular new girl suddenly becoming really popular.  This shit is rancid.

The Sting

Yeah, I've never seen it before.  I didn't really expect much other than a light-hearted romp, but what a tightly-knit piece of work it turned out to be.  Modern movie-makers could learn a bunch from this (I'm sure they did, but then forgot it, or just don't have the talent).

Encounters at the End of the World

Good times.  Really gorgeous movie and all the interviews with the people working/living in Antarctica felt very genuine.

Slumdog Millionare

Was good, but not great.  I really dislike scripts where everyone in the world besides the main lovers are secretly evil and trying to fuck you over.  A few people...ok.  But when every character is introduced only to try to fuck the main character over, it just feels cliche.

City of God

Finally got around to seeing this and really liked it.  The directing was exciting and the story was good.  I was totally hoping it was not based off a real story by the end because of all the violence and death in the tale....and then the end credits said it was :\

Rock n' Rolla.  So close to a good movie :|

The first 45 mins or so where it's setting up all the plotlines and characters was a lot of fun.  Then it just sort of meanders on some level of entertaining but not really all that entertaining for the whole film and then just kind of ends.  Meh.

Rachel Getting Married

Wow.wow.fuck.wow.  The directing and editing in this were SO GOOD.  Incredible use of handheld style and so tightly edited.  Never a dull moment and the acting was top-notch.  Might be my favorite 2008 movie and like my favorite 2007 film, Jesse James, I miss it in the theater and end up seeing it in the following year, lol ^^;

Glengarry Glen Ross: Jack Lemmon's role :hump

I only caught a glimpse of the movie awhile back, but it was Alec Baldwin coming in and delivery a speech for the ages and Jack Lemmon being so awesome. I had to leave for some reason but it's awesomeness stuck with me. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to make a point of watching the whole thing.

Couldn't finish Forgetting Sarah Marshal, so I watched Training Day instead. I can't believe that (a) the movie is eight years old and (b) I've never seen it until now. How PD of me.

I enjoyed the movie, but I was disappointed with some of the contrived plot points. For example, it was an amazing coincidence that the girl Hoyt stopped from being raped also happened to be the cousin of the man paid to kill Hoyt. And Alonzo's carefully planned and highly contingent set-up of Jake Hoyt was very contrived. Since Alonzo needs the money by the end of the day, what happens if Hoyt refuses to bend his ethics right from the start, derailing everything?

Hell, Alonzo was contrived and over-the-top. I was, wrongly, expecting more of a morality tale involving a jaded police-officer's means-ends reasoning gone bad. But that wasn't the case; Alonzo's just a self-interested sociopath, though an entertaining one.

I agree on Training Day, part of watching his performance was "oh shit, this niccah is cooooold", but another part is just like "Here's Denzel Washington trying to act against type, doing it ok I guess but I'm still pretty aware what he's trying for".

Training Day is one of my favorite movies.

Also to bring up an older topic, I'm burned out on Apatow.  In two years, I'll go back and look at the dozens of movies he surely made and find out which ones were really worth watching and which ones were just wastes of time.  40 YOV is a good one an the other one is Superbad.  No, do not get into the semantics w/ me regarding whether he made the movie or his production team.  I don't give a fuck.

I am quickly getting bored of the various movies he produces, there is far too many of them. We don't need 2-3 of those a year. As for his actual direction, I am not tired of that at all. He has only done 2 movies so far and his two actual films are both better than all the endless movies he produces. And this third film, Funny People looks a lot better than his various productions his name is thrown onto.

Cheebs, the only difference between an Apatow produced/written comedy and an Apatow directed comedy is that he cranks the sentimental bullcrap up to eleven for the climax.  No thank you.

Role Models was great, by the way.  Apatow crew without Apatow involved - and it was better for it.  Just when I thought they were going to go ahead with some kind of Apatow-esque courtroom scene where we all learn a valuable life lesson (with a couple of curse words thrown in), they said - fuck you, Apatow! - and rocked out to a KISS inspired climax.  Fantastic.

Apatow is quickly becoming this generation's John Hughes.

Yeah, I agree with this. Hughes put his name on a shit load of films he produced or wrote but the ones he directed himself tended to be sentimental and kinda sappy.

Still, Sixteen Candles is a 80's classic.

No Country for Old Men

Really awesome.  I'm not sure if I've ever seen a film directed by the Coens but I admit, they're pretty damn good.  I also had no idea whatsoever what the movie was about, which made the first half hour or so utterly riveting.

I really liked the way they get the camera in quite close at times, it gives a great feeling of what the environment is like.  Pacing was superb.  Actors were all great.

The ending was a bit meh, (especially since I drifted off half way through the final monologue and then suddenly it was over :lol) but that was more personal taste.

I watched Milk tonight and... wow, I'm glad I don't pick who wins the Academy Awards. Milk was a film that was admittedly lacking in complex cinematography, but the acting was amazing and some thought to some minor symbolism in some shots made the film amazing. Compelling story too. Fuck Brokeback Mountain, this is the "gay" movie that's truly good.

Agreed.  From a screenwriting perspective, it's a particularly impressive effort since biopics have a tendency to be too sprawling and end up with no compelling (if without a cohesive narrative entirely) story.  They focused on a particular time in Milk's life and made a smart move by making Anita Bryant the boogeyman.  Then Brolin sells it with his portrayal of Dan White.

Good stuff.

And I agree, Brokeback Mountain sucks.

We seem to be agreeing a lot lately. I read the Wikipedia entry soon afterwards about Harvey Milk and it just makes me extremely glad they decided to focus on what they did. The entire cast was amazing. For one, James Franco is my favorite "good actor who isn't being recognized." Emile Hirsch gets some points too, but the star (other than Penn) is Brolin.

I watched JCVD tonight.  It came off very well shot and edited, minus a lot of graininess and washed out/grayness on the DVD. Jean Claude himself showed great range as an actor, and the movie is obviously geared to show it. I really enjoyed it, but that is coming from a huge fan of van damme and any attempts at making a judgement of the artistic merits of the film are reserved till a more studious second viewing.

I re-watched The Dark Knight. It wasn't as enjoyable the second time. I think I enjoyed the spectacle of the movie the first time, watching it in an IMAX theater. The same experience can't be duplicated on a 32" TV with standard stereo speakers.

The film is stunningly beautiful. Filled with soul. Epic in scale. Unbelievably brilliant in action, design and scope. Throughout the film - I was told I was twitching and vibrating like one's cock before coating the interior fleshy drapes of the most awesome vagina ever!

This is unlike anything you've seen before. This isn't anything like a Kurosawa Japanese epic Samurai film. This isn't anything like CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON or the Zhang Yimou films. This is something wholly new. And absolutely that fucking awesome or more!

well it did have a tiny fraction of the budget that those films had

i mean, casino royale probably had like a 150 million dollar budget, and any of the fast and the furious movies prob around 100 mil

the fact that this is a tiny french action movie and it turned out this good should be taken into account when judging it

The first F&F (while also very shitty) was actually a modestly budgeted film.  But I agree, I agree very much that District B13 kicked a lot of arse and was quite fun, I don't think its anything to get worked up about though.

if only there was a sequel to it.  Wouldn't that be swell?

I finally saw the Twin Peaks movie. Definitely the weakest of David Lynch's works.

I watched the three Bourne films and enjoyed them.

I bought these on DVD recently, but haven't seen them yet.  Looking forward to some straight-up kick-ass action. :punch
