The Micheal Mann of today makes pretty good movies shot with crappy digital video cinematography and terrible, terrible soundtracks.

The Micheal Mann of 1995 made a very, very good movie that has none of the flaws of his latter films, was cast just about perfectly (back when Pacino and De Niro were still interested in more then paycheck chasing roles), and is a fascinating portrait of professionals at work and their interior lives apart from their careers. Mann won't ever likely make a film as good as Heat again, and he certainly won't make any film as badass as Heat was ever again. Lighting in a bottle that was.

I wanted De Niro to kill Pacino so badly I almost bit through my own arm after the ending. At the very least, they should have killed each other.

My ending: De Niro blows Pacino away, then meets Amy Brennaman at the airport, bangs her in the shitter, then tears up her ticket as he gets on the plane by himself. No fucking attachments.

I would never give Heat a 7.5, even if I do think some of the romance stuff is a bit weak. The movie still rocks.

The movie is not bad, but its a lesser effort. The photography just plain sucks (not gritty, just ugly), and while the female lead, Gong Li is a quite capable actress, her shaky english doesn't do her any favors. Those things are distracting, but don't fatally wound what is still a pretty not bad movie.

Himuro is right about the series btw. It doesn't have a great reputation because of its later-on, well, "80's-TV-ness", but for awhile, its as solid as any TV show from its era was.

yeah, Collateral is pretty dang good.

Ong-Bak 2 isn't exactly the movie I was planning to see. Sure there's loads of well shot, well staged, and extremely painful looking fight scenes. But it also attempts to tell an epic story of one wounded young man's powerful thirst for vengeance and the high cost of it. Since it lacks the lighter tone of other Tony Jaa smashing knee films, its less fun to watch even though the action scenes are as thrilling as ever.

Its an admirable attempt at making a real movie, not just a feature length highlight reel, but in this case, loftier goals don't make for a better film. On the whole, its still very much worth seeing for the many jaw-dropping moments of stunt work and the apparently very dedicated to their craft work of the Thai stuntmen, but this epic on the cheap feels incomplete (probably because it is, sequel hits next year) and not entirely satisfactory. Even though its strengths don't quite meet its ambitions, what it does, it does pretty damn well.

I remember seeing My Left Foot when it came out on VHS, then rewatched it in college. He's absolutely brilliant in it.

My parents ended up taking me to see In the Name of the Father when it was in theaters (thank you Mom and Dad, for indoctrinating me early on in film snobbery), he gives an extremely powerful performance.

The dude is insanely dedicated to his craft.
