bayonetta  :wtf

edit: so far it's pretty good but not amazing.
Make sure you play it on hard when you're done. Seriously.

Bayonetta is a grower. It's okay at first, but then it just gets better and better and I'm having trouble getting platinum or pure platinum on all the battles.

The variety is excellent and the game manages to keep you on your toes. One second you're walking down a village road, the next second you're jumping over a tram and fighting fire wheel angels.

Unlike NG and DMC, it takes the core DMC/Onimusha formula and enhances it so it feels fresh.

The more I play the more I think the demo that was released a year ago was a poor indication of the overall product's quality, which really didn't make it a "must play" for me.

im not really finding the combat as fun in Bayonetta as I did in DMC4. I bet it gets better when you get more moves and stuff but even from the beginning of DMC4 I was loving the combat engine.
I got to the boss in the coliseum and stopped.

then started playing

Darksiders

enjoying it so far. i'm about 90 minutes in and its a pretty fun game. combat is simple but feels good. design seems to be fairly standard GOW type stuff but I hear there's more "zelda" like influences as it goes. will keep playing.

Now. I just popped in Metroid: Other M

Gave Star Wars: The Force Unleashed a spin this morning on PC w/360 controller. Pretty awesome! So far, this feels like the Star Wars game I've wanted since Jedi Knight. Playing on Sith Lord to start with 'cause I hear you are way overpowered for most of the game - we'll see.

Sadly 3D Vision is not an option for this but it looks good in 1080p at least.

quick first impressions:

What I like:
I enjoy the actual gameplay of moving around and shooting. As someone who has wanted to play a new "2D" "sidescrolling" Metroid game for a long time, this aspect appeals to me.

What I kind of don't like:
The level design. This feels like Metroid for babies.

What I don't like at all:
The characters.
The voice acting.
The cut scenes.
The narrative.
Samus.

I do have a question about Darksiders tho, is there any real technique to defeating the larger, does-not-stagger enemies other than stick and move? I'm playing on Apocalyptic and I'm having some trouble with the big guys.

Getting kind of burnt out on Gundam Musou 3.  There's only so many hours of xxxyyyxxx you can play in these games before you're ready to move on.

I do want to finish the story though, cause it's kind of interesting.  Hopefully will be able to clear the story and try all the new characters by about 30 hours (~18 now).

Think I'm gonna start up 3rd Birthday tonight.

Did you even beat it or are you like Himu and judge games wholly based on their demo section?

Either way you're wrong about this too. Darksiders is Zelda with GoW-combat instead of babby-lite combat.

The 3rd Birthday seems pretty cool but yeah it kills your hands and if you're going to make a free camera 3d shooter with no 2nd analogue there really needs to be a center camera button that you can just click once like NG.  Maybe there is one, I haven't checked the options much yet.

played some Assassin's Creed II and Mass Effect II, awesome stuff. Ubisoft DRM caught me out though, fuck that noise. Will have to get a patched exe or something.

I went female renegade Infiltrator this time in Mass Effect, after male Vanguards before. Loving it all over again. Both games are stunning in 3D. I know I'm like a stuck record on this, but I think you'll all be on the same bandwagon sooner or later :)

Well I almost 1cc'd Death Smiles 2X the first time I played it. But my xbox crashed right before the final boss.

Game's fun though. It's REALLY easy but the scoring system seems pretty awesome at first glance. The graphics are shit, but it can look pretty nice when there's tons of explosions and numbers and purple rings filling the screen.

edit: Just went into training mode and replayed the level. Killed Satan Clause no problem. This is probably the easiest shooter I've ever played. Going to do another run on death mode + the EX stage to see if that cranks it up to Cave difficulty™.

edit: HOLY SHIT the game is so much better playing at only level 3. The final boss will fuck your shit up when he's at max rank.

I just played the 3rd birthday for a few hours. Pretty good game, but there's a real lack of variety - I think there's only been two different enemies so far. And it took me forever to kill the 2nd boss, but that was mostly because I didn't realize you have to go into liberation mode to finish him off. Great graphics too.

They're ultimate nation sims. You have full control over an entire nation, making nearly every macro decision you can think. They're open games with open goals, it's all in what you want to do. If you want to take some tiny nation and make it into a world power, go for it. If you want to set up a massive war in Europe between the super-powers during the 17th century, go for it. But it's not something you can jump into and be blown away by how awesome it is, you've got to have patience and you've got to want to play a very open, very in-depth nation sim.

Europa Universalis III would probably be the best one to start with.

Alan Wake DLC: The Writer

Not as good as The Signal; better than the main game.  Still had the great pacing from The Signal, just less "gameplay" (vague w/e) with more cool environment funkery.  It's a shame that there might not be anymore Alan Wake because I really liked the two DLCs and thought they were an improvement over the main game.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Picked this back up.  Finished past world five.  Fun game with some occasional frustrating bits.  Sometimes it feels like levels/obstacles are designed around memorization and it can be annoying.  The most baffling thing is the entirety of World 4: all mine cart and rocket levels--what? an entire world that only serves as a dumping ground for the worst parts of the game.  World 5 might be the best world yet, so that redeems it a bit.

I'm playing through Saw 1 now. I'm up to case 3 and the game's pretty decent so far. But the thing that's really pissing me off is these wire traps on the floor. What fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow thought this was good game design? You're either constantly looking down at the floor to see if there's a wire laying around, or you blindly run into one, get killed instantly, and then lose 10 minutes of progress. Unbelievable.

Fun game other than that though. I guess I'll add the 2nd game to my Gamefly queue.

Been playing a few things lately-

First is GTA:SA for the umpteenth time.  I already own the Xbox and the PC versions but bought it again when it went on sale for 400pts on XBLA, not really sure why but fuck it.  I did it.  Just made it out of San Fierro and now I'm in the desert.  I can't believe after all these years and after all the times that I've gone through it, San Andreas is still pretty damn enjoyable.  By far my favorite GTA game.

Next is Joe Danger on PSN.  It's like a Nintendo version of Trials HD.  Definitely one of the better PSN games I've played in awhile (which admittingly isn't saying a lot because I very rarely buy PSN games anymore.....no demo, no sale).  Good stuff.

Enslaved for the 360.  Holy fuck balls this game gives me a headache.  From the spastic camera to the crazy twitchy controls the game is trying to give me a migraine.  I'm up to Chapter 7 or 8 right now and I'm about to just send it back and forget about it.  I was looking forward to the game but I can't handle the weird motion going on here and frankly the whole thing is pretty damn boring to boot.  You do the same thing, over and over again.  Fight a bunch of robots using 3 different moves, lift gate to next area, and repeat.  I liked the demo (the first level) and all but I haven't ran into anything that good since.  Heavenly Sword was better than this, and I didn't really like that.  Ninja Theory, you've made my list. >:(

Finally Civ5.  I'm a huge Civ fan and I've bought and played just about every version of the game out there but I don't know how exactly I feel about this one.  It's like a mish mash of Civ Revolution and a straight up Civ game.  I like the inclusion of city states and idea of forcing you to make deals or pushing you to war for valuable resources like oil and uranium, and I also like that religion and spies are gone since I rarely used either from previous games but at the same time Civ5 feels a bit too streamlined and kind of limited.  I need to play a few more games to form a better opinion but right now I kind of want to just forget about this and go back to Civ4.

On a 10 day holiday and had my first real day off today playing Lara Croft GoL and Demons Souls  :heart  Think I nearly finished GoL and I polished off all the white world tendency events in Demons Souls, still need to do the pure black stuff, kill off primeevil demons and BPs, farm the remaining geckos and kill the last  demon before going into NG+. Also bought Pac Man CE DX on PSN, for some reason it's not up on XBLA over here. After playing GoL and Pac Man some more, I'm going to catch up on SMB and try out Guwange.

I started playing Red Dead Redemption and it was cool although the movement controls feel awkward like GTAIV.  I stopped playing when I sat down at some camp outside the starting ranch and when I got up the nice gentlemen starting shooting me and I shot back and killed them and then it told me I lost 50 honor and people were going to hate me so I turned the game off  :(

Trespasser is a game I want to play now but I don't think it's on gog or steam or anything like that.  I only tried it a few times a long time ago.  It's like the beginnings of an alternate history for fps games.  I mean, back when it was released, what is now standard for fps games (just moving the aiming reticule around) wasn't exactly the standard.  Though, even recently Amensia had you doing mouse gestures.  I only played the demo and it had you grabbing and pulling doors open and stuff like that.

It's really good. After playing it a little bit you'll quickly see how insanely influential this game is in the modern FPS. The controls have a learning curve, I had to customize mine, but once you get the hang of it it's fantastic.

EDIT: Immediately I can see how both Bioshock and Half Life 2 have borrowed liberally from this game. It's interesting how modest the game feels. Oh and btw if you want to play it: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JO162TIP

I know it says Duke Nukem 3D but it isn't. Found it attached to a YouTube video. Enjoy.

Well I 1000'd Saw. It's an okay game but it gets really repetitive. They reuse the same puzzles over and over, there's tons of backtracking, the combat is god awful (though it is pretty unobtrusive), and the environments are basically always the same dingy, beaten up hallways. And those fucking wire traps are the worst piece of game design I've seen in years. But eh, it was still a decent game. I'd give it a 6/10.

Has anyone played Saw 2? I hope that game has a lot more variety. Having twice as many different types of puzzles would be good, for starters.

I think I'm gonna play through No More Heroes 360 now, but I'm kinda afraid that game will kill my J360 for good. Oh well, wish me luck.

Well after about 50 disc read errors I finally killed the first boss in NMH 360. For the most part, I like this port. It's got a nice graphical upgrade, better controls, and achievements. The load times are a little long, but they're not that bad. I do miss some of the Wii-specific features like motion control suplexes and Sylvia's voice coming through the Wii remote, but oh well.

Probably never going to finish this game since I get disc read errors every time I play it. I gotta sell this piece of shit system already and get a Slim+kinect bundle or something. Whoever designed the first wave of 360 hardware needs to be curb-stomped.

Planescape: Torment

I don't get why so many people have such a hardon for this game. The environments are ugly (though ahead of its time with all the vomit-yellows, greys and browns in the palette!), combat is horribly boring so far, and it's just dialogue tree to dialogue tree ad nauseum. I'm hoping it eventually gets more interesting as I get further in.

Because it's got great characters, great story, interesting quests, unique locations, amazing soundtrack, and isn't burdened by a brutal difficulty level. IMO, of course.

IMO, of course.

combat is one thing i could never get used to in the game, or baldur's gate for that matter.  i stumbled along barely scraping through encounters (and avoiding them whenever possible) but late in the came you're forced to go through this dungeon filled with monsters that were capable of crushing my entire party alone.  never beat it because of that.

anyway i was trying some olde psx game and gave a spin to kagero deception, the concept is interessing but the execution is awfull, get yourself chased, block trap + arrow trap + boulder, washe rinse and repeat.....

I am playing Arkham Asylum.  Wholly half-assed art, Batman; whoever drew those pictures in the character bios shouldn't be allowed to hold crayons, let alone contribute to videogames.  :yuck
