Currently trying to enjoy Brutal Legend.  It's tough.  Not like, the game is tough - it's tough to enjoy.  I love the humor, I love the art, the setting, the music -- I was really digging it for awhile in spite of being peppered with relatively minor, yet annoying oversights in design (like, why the fuck is there no mini-map on the HUD?) -- but where I am now, just as the goth people appear and the RTS is in full-swing, it's pissing me off more than anything.

I could go on and on about things I'm finding irritating with the RTS: no indication as to the units you're selectings as you issue broad commands; issuing commands to individual groups is like building a Rube Goldberg machine to make toast; units seemingly taking priority on combat over your commands if they're already engaged, making it impossible to retreat or shift position until everyone is dead, one way or the other; random target selector on 'Attack', which is more like 'Attack Move' anyway because...; it's apparently impossible to focus-fire on any individual target, even if you were to get lucky and somehow select the actual target you wanted to attack (although the A.I. doesn't have a problem doing this, of course, as they always managed to rush and gangbang my ranged units or healer).

There are plenty more I won't bother to mention, but I think that about covers the ones that stand out the most since they all effect my ability to coherently strategize without ridiculous exertion.  And they're effectively ruining my experience with the game.

I'm sure someone out there has opposition to at least one or all of those issues.  If anybody's figured this fucking game out, by all means, please tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

edit: reading the official thread, it seems I shouldn't be trying to play this game as an RTS and instead just be doing more stuff w/ Eddie and using more Double Team attacks.

from my 360 thread

"i think i'm getting near the end of chapter 9... i swear whoever decided to make a random encounter with 3 heavy artillery needs to get punched in the dick! it takes 5 minute to take them down

5 WHOLE FREAKIN MINUTE FOR A RANDOM ENCOUNTER"

anyway isn't chapter 10 when you get to do the side-quest and all?

No that's chapter 11.

chapter 9 sucks dick for the reasons you just said. I'd try to evade enemies out of habit. Chapter 10 is even worse.

you know one thing that rubs me off is how every enemy seems to be weak to whatever skill you last unlocked

"picked slow? HERE'S A BUNCH OF SLOWABLE ENEMIES" you got anti-buff skill? HERE'S AN ENEMY THAT BUFF HIMSELF? you got poison? WHY I JUST HAVE A POISONABLE MONSTER HERE!"

also

1) should i start to dip into the upgrade system? i haven't upgraded anything so far since i tought i might always find a new weapon,or might end up spending all my stuff on one character just to have trouble when the game later switch to another one
2) what's the difference between different kind of upgrade stone? i guess only high level stone works for high level item or something like that?

I'm not playing a damn thing. My 60GB BC PS3 YLOD'd last night while playing Gundam Musou 3. There's a computer repair place near my house that does YLOD fixes for $45, I'll probably take it over there after work today.

I beat FFXIII on the 360, then started a playthrough on the PS3 just so I could get to chapter 11 and do missions.  I think I quit somewhere around 7 hours in on the PS3 version.  It's an amazing battle system wrapped in a whole lot of terrible everything.

Been playing Third Birthday today.  Awesome game in sore need of new enemies at this point (about an hour in.)  I will be so pissed if I'm still fighting the same 2 enemies in about an hour.  The gun play, diving system, liberation meter, DNA board-- all this shit is awesome.  but it'll be for nothing if I don't get some newer and more dynamic guys to kill.

True, but I'm kinda glad I lost my old Demon's Souls save. Gives me an excuse to play through it another 10 times.

Gonna start 3D Dot Game Heroes in a minute. Been playing my PS3 a lot lately.

Right after I download this 180mb patch, that is. :-\

The "it's not an RTS" line was disingenuous of Schafer, but the double teaming with your units and use of Eddie with the (modified) Druid Plow/Deuce can be hugely effective.

I think I mentioned this in the main Brütal Legend thread, but it's similar to playing Warcraft II, but only if your UI/selection gauntlet can travel anywhere, remove fog-of-war, and flick the discovered enemy units right off the map. It's a big change in dynamic, but at its heart it is still an RTS during those sequences.

In particular, I found it really helpful to use the Druid Plow to constantly harass the enemy infantry, just whammo-ing them with the bass speakers or flame exhaust, nailing them with the cow catcher, and only very occasionally hopping out of it for one on one battle.

It is also very helpful to use the "set waypoint" solo at any currently important fan geyser, so that whenever you create a new unit, it will march to that spot without waiting at your Main Stage.

I just got home from a smallish New years get-together with attached LAN party.

UT2004
as_mothership remains my favourite "vanilla" map in this game, for whatever reason.

Frozen Throne Tower Defense maps
stupid shitty Blizzard patches breaking everything with every .0001 revision.

Star Craft 2
...nah. Not my kind of thing. I'm shitty with RTS stuff. Still fun.

Plants vs Zombies
 this is surprisingly fun.

FF XIV
Words fail me. I came prepared for the suck and still got burned. This game is pure, concentrated sewage.

Civ 4
Fell asleep to the awesome main menu music. Don't remember much else.

Serious Sam (Original + "HD" version)
*BLAM* "AAAAAAAAAaaaaaah yourself!"  :heart :gun :gun :gun

Just Cause 2
Just caused some more mayhem. Hurr.

Aquaria
Looks awesome, not sure if I like the gameplay though. Needs more playtime.

Bonus:
Boardgames like Dominion (+expansions), Stone Age, Small World (+expansions), and a whole slew of other games whose names I don't really remember.

Cheese, soup, AND oil fondue. So awesome. So dangerous. Mixing hungry people, food and pointy things leads to messy deaths.

Total amount of sleep: Not enough. By far. I'm getting too old for this shit.  :'(

Hello all! I've been away for a while and this is what I've been doing:

Trespasser
Beaten. Tied with Half-Life: Source for my all-time favorite FPS.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Beaten. Excellent game. Starts out a little rough and gets really fun later on. Going back for 100% atm.

Darksiders
Playing on Apocalyptic and getting worked pretty hard. I've never been a fan of hack'n'slash on higher difficulties because of how they usually swing it by making enemies have lots of health and giving you none. Still, amazing game so far. Vuvuzela of doom :heart

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Been going to my friend's house and playing this with a friend for the past week. I find it's a pretty solid game, I just can't shake my desire for want of an open-world Metroidvania game. Despite how derivative it is, I still really enjoy it.

Gyromancer
Awesome, awesome game. So glad I finally got this.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
I actually missed the original CE because I simply wasn't interested in more Pac-Man. After watching the quicklook on CE DX tho, I asked myself mid-video, "Why aren't I playing this right now?" I don't think I've ever made a $10 investment that paid off faster than getting this. Awesome game to play stoned.

EDIT:

Oh yeah I forgot

Zeno Clash
Worst game I've played so far in my Steam library. I hear the 360 version isn't so bad, but by god the PC version is a big steaming pile of crap. I love the setting and story and such, but the actual game is the antithesis of fun.

Gundam Musou 3
Still working away at the missions.  Almost at 200 missions cleared and should have all story-related missions wrapped up by the end of the weekend and then I'll move on to my next Japanese fun-fun game.

PoP Sands of Time
About 1/3rd through now and I'm surprised at two things:
1) how well the exploration and platforming holds up.  The controls, level design, puzzles all hold up extremely well.  It feels like a smooth modern game.
2) how fucking frequent the horrible combat is.  For some reason I thought it was THIS generation where devs got all lazy and started padding their games with rooms and rooms of enemies, but no, 10 years ago it was even worse.  SoT has MORE combat than Forgotten Sands by a huge margin and more combat than most action/platformers in general!  It's like every time you spend 3-4 mins navigating fun platforming through a room, you walk into the next room and it's 5-10 mins of dozens of waves of enemies!  Repeat for every freaking room in the game.  The combat is simple and junky like I remembered but it gets the job done.  It's not the combat that is the problem, but the waves and waves of enemies.  You pretty much have to ignore all this combat (which is probably like 70% of the game time) to consider the game a "timeless classic" that holds up.  If they made a mod that instantly killed all enemies upon spawning, it'd be a classic ;)  But I'm trying to put up with it as all the rest is really awesome and it's been enough years that it feels fresh replaying it now.

i was just pulling himuro leg with the comment before (tough i don't really see the charm in big empty plain-like space's...) but in all seriousness finding mark is being the biggest pain i've faced in this game so far,the map sometimes doesn't help much (a star shows in a point and then i discover i have to go all over the map to reach that point because in reality it was showing that point on a different elevation!) there is a lot of space to track (which i have to repeat everytime i want to repeat a mark in case i don't 5 star it the first time) and worst of all the enemies of this map are the worst,i had less trouble with the last 2 boss than with the random stuff thrown in here heck in fact i think the last 2 boss had less hp and dealed less damage than some enemies here! which makes wandering around aimless even more painfull

The prologue is pretty bad, since it's nothing but some cutscenes and some combat. The game opens up some in Chapter 1 [you actually get a small town and some countryside to wander through] and then it opens up even further in Chapter 2 when you get inside Vizima.

Quote

There's not much charm in Point A to Point B corridors either. Might as well just make forward movement automatic and do some kind of hybrid RPG-action game if that's how your game is gonna go.

it really is awful at first. but the more marks you beat, the more teleports you gain, which makes hunting marks 10x more fun.

mmm i see... i think i'll try to 1000/1000 the game anyway since none of the achievements looks that tedious (and no grinding the shit out of everybody doesn't count,i did that in FFX too!)

from what i understand there is an enemy that can easily be killed that drops up to 80,000 XP point which can be doubled to 160,000 with the right accesory so if there is such a way i don't really mind murderizing the guy until every character is maxed

You wont have a choice. IF you want 1000 you will need to grind anyway. Trapezohedrons...

in order to get the best shit you have to grind. In order to get the ultimate weapons you have to grind the turtles for traps.

PS3 is back and alive, but more than likely for just a few months.

Doing it right now. I'll probably trade it in while it's still working... :shh

edit: Called GS, they'll give me $170 for it. Just over 1/2 the cost of a new Slim.

To 1000 FF13, you gotta get treasure hunter, and that means you need to spend like 15-20+ hours killing the giant turtles you see wandering around the plains in order to get gil and trapezhedrons. Your characters will be maxed out long before you're done with that. There is a pretty efficient route you can take and the turtles are pretty fun to fight, but it's still tedious.

Started a new career in Amped 2 over the weekend. Got her up to #1 tonight, doing some legends stuff. Might be time to play FFXIII or maybe just replay Halo 1.
