I took my router to my arcade cocktail cabinet on Tuesday night and took the bezel off my monitor which allowed me to mount the monitor closer to the top of the acrylic cover with no gap between the sides.

I then added HLSL to MAME to add proper scanlines to games. I dare say my retro cocktail cabinet looks awesome now. I'll try and add pics later.

So basically I'm playing everything from around 1982-84.

I'm in the middle of playing Loom. Strange game. I already know I'm going to forget a crucial melody, but so far so good. The game, too.

I've also been tinkering around with DOSBox SVN Daum to get that sweet Roland MT-32 music and some other goodies (save states, pixel shaders) and play Ultima Underworld 2 (I've watched a Let's Play of the first one), but something causes the top left quadrant of the screen to be stretched across the whole window. Sometimes the title screen works just fine, but then it screws up again right after. No idea if that's even something I can fix, as I've tried most settings that may be related to it.
It works fine on the latest vanilla SVN builds and the ancient 0.74 build, but I want to use Daum. :<

Now I'm setting up Exult (source port) to play Ultima VII instead. :doge

Right? I've seen people say that the Soud Blaster Pro 1 music fits Underworld better and is more atmospheric or something, but it just doesn't compare.

I think people think it because it's what they had and is what they are used to. Getting a GUS or a Roland was so rare people just didn't know the difference.

Through a GOG quirk like Steam with their "bundles" that credit you for owning existing games, I have Ultima I through 9 plus Underworld I and II and something called Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams and Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire. (I may have had some of these as I remember some of the Ultima games were always free on GOG. And I think Origin gave away VII and VIII.)

I never played any of these I don't think. I should play 9 first right?

Naw, should play them in release order?

I also have had Loom on Steam, another game I haven't played. I should just play all these 1980s/early 1990s games I have for a while to let my modern backlog pile up even more. Especially now with the new 1060. What better use of it can there be but Ultima I?

It's hard trying to figure this out on Steam, I wish they'd let you somehow sort the games by original release date. I found a bunch of random garbage the other day I didn't even realize I had acquired and was like "haha i remember playing the shareware of this" like Stargunner and Raptor and Tyrian. I must have bought some Apogee pack for $3 or something. I tried using wikipedia but it didn't help, so then I was using the CGW archive and searching to see what from the issues I had in my account, found a ton more stuff that way. Also why I posted some of those old ads and stuff from them. :lol

GOG lets you sort your library by original release date so I just mass-installed everything from before 1998 plus some modern things like Giants: Citizen Kabuto. :aah

Think about the deals once you're done catching up. :rejoice

I thought about starting with the first Ultima trilogy, but I've found with Wasteland that I just can't go back that far any more. I need VGA graphics at the very least.  Not to mention any tedious quirks games of that vintage might have.
VII is in many ways the pinnacle of the series, so I jumped in there. I doubt I'll finish it, but I want to at least get a good idea of how it plays.

You might want to bookmark this if you don't want play nothing but Ultima games this year.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto :preach One of the first games I bought on GOG.

Some of this stuff as I was installing them, especially doing it on Steam where I had to lookup stuff and reading about it. I was like yeah, it's going to be impossible to actually play through some of these, but I can force myself to at least do a couple hours and get the flavor of them hopefully. Some of them I have played before, so I feel like revisiting them for a couple hours is all that's important.

Actually, the other night I was playing Titanfall 2 for a while. And wanted to do something different since I couldn't get into any non-attrition games. So I fired up Battlelog for the first time in forever and there was exactly one Hardline server and I'd never played it after getting it for free. Somehow wound up playing it for four hours in Hotwire which is hilariously absurd*, even did some hacker mode which has no explanations for how anything works and there were these guys who spent at least an hour arguing over their skills that was stupid and so like BF2 in a way since they were both just camping spots. Now I kinda want to play it again to see if there's more servers like this weekend at decent hours or just to see the rest of the maps on the 24/7 Hotwire server.

So I should at least owe classic titles that much dedication.

I'm hoping Giants runs well, I remember it didn't on Vista years back, but GOG fixes stuff so should be good.

*Just for anyone not familiar. Hotwire is your standard Battlefield capture the points. Only they're cars. And you have to keep driving them around to "hold" the point, and teammates can get in the car and hang out the windows to shoot and throw nades and stuff. It's so dumb it works. Well, provided that both teams understand the objective. One "team" on the one map seemed to think you just "captured" the car and you were good. Naw, you gotta keep driving them around at max speed.

Picked up a copy of Digimon Story: Cybersleuth the other day since it was down to $20 at Gamestop and I really like it so far. It's basically Pokemon and Persona mixed with, like...Neuromancer or something. It's majorly animu, too, but that's fine with me. I can already tell that dungeons and some of the sidequests are gonna be not so hot [lots of repetition and such] and the combat's a bit simplistic, but I like what it's doing with the story and the characters are interesting enough to make me not care too much about the minor issues the game has.

VII is god tier western RPG, I was also obsessed with VIII as a kid, haven't played V or VI, my attempt at playing the others ended around halfway through IV. VIII was the first third person (isometric) RPG I played, uses the same engine as Crusader: No Remorse. I think VIII is a little underrated. Dated jank with super frustrating parts of gameplay (the platforming sections  :-\ ) but that's also a part of the appeal, and the exploration, art, story and gameplay are still great.

I beat Arkham Knight, or at least finished the main plot line.  What a disappointment.  The game suffers from Ubisoft syndrome where there is a ton of shit to do, but only about 10% of it is interesting.  I also couldn't handle shoehorning Joker in yet again.  Let the fucker rest in peace.

Asylum is still my favorite game in the series.

Loom has one of the strangest endings.
Finding out that it was planned as a trilogy was actually kind of disappointing, and not because its sequels were never made.

I booted up Borderlands 2 last night after watching the AGDQ run. I was shocked that the PHYSX stuff in it still cause serious performance drag. I figured my 1070 would brute force that shit. I could probably connect up my old 680 and dedicate Physx to it and it would be fine.

I also remembered that I still ahve all the same weapons from when a few of us here grinded Terramorphous and that one other quest to get the Conference Call and the Bee shield. Or... didn't Joe_Molotov just give us a bunch of Conference Calls?

edit: I just read that they fucking nerfed the Conference Call/Bee combo. Bastards.

I've tried ultima IV and it's just too dated but the premise sounds amazing to me. I wish it'd get a modern remake

I'm not sure where to start with ultima.

Lotta cool games at MAGfest, some of them on some beautiful PVMs with RGB display:

-Ladder (addicting text-mode Donkey Kong-esque game for the obscure Kaypro computer from the early 80's)
-Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Grafitti
-Blue's Journey
-some Space Harrier ripoff for the Famicom starring a schoolgirl where you fight giant kangaroos, that's much better than the Master System Space Harrier
-Blazing Star
-Battle Garegga
-ESP Ra.De. (the game that got me into CAVE back in the day)
-RayXanber for the SuperGrafx
-Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
-Music Gun Gun 2
-Jubeat
-Medieval Madness (pinball)
-AC/DC (pinball)
-Mike Tyson's Punch Out with a controller the size of a coffee table
^_^

Started and finished The Dig right after Loom. Got stuck about half-way through or so because I missed an item (of course), so I just played the rest with a walkthrough. Verdict: Eh.

Now playing Quake and then probably Arcane Dimensions. Quakeaddicted has an abundance of maps, but I have no idea which are worthwhile.

Without. I didn't see the explosive though, so I was stuck there for a while, regardless.

The most asshole part was the energy cell you can miss near the start of the game. That's where I broke down entirely and followed a walkthrough. Just wanted it over with.
Found a screenshot of it.

That panel behind his left arm actually comes off, hiding a power cell you need waaaaaaaay later. Fuckin horseshit. :maf

I think the reason you don't like so many games is because you play too many. Why have time to enjoy games if you have a massive backlog that must be completed? Meanwhile I still haven't beaten FFXV and haven't played a video game in three weeks.

Being honest, I'm not sure how so many of you play so many games past the age of 30. But I understand interests shift. Video games aren't a hobby of mine anymore and I don't identify as a gamer anymore but what I'm trying to understand is the act of forcing yourself to play games just because.

Maybe it's outside looking in my case.

Reads like projection.  :doge

I'm critical, sure, but I don't feel 'forced' to go through my backlog. I just know that it's impossible to catch up if I give every game all the time they demand. Playing a wide variety of games is more important to me than seeing the credits on every one I play. A blip of satisfaction or achievements or 'cred' or whatever aren't worth the effort and time. That would be a chore to me.

I make exceptions if a game is short (<10h), but generally, if I'm done I drop it and move on. When I really love a game (Witcher 3 was the last) I do absolutely everything there is to do, even the worthless Ubi-Content.

Finally got 1000/1000 in Resonance of Fate, that second playthrough would have been so much easier if I had just used NG+ but nope I had to beat it on hard with fresh characters. I used a cheesy exploit on the final boss, bung a couple dozen molotovs at him hoping he'll catch fire. If he does, gg.

I think I'll try The Cave next as it was free with GWG.

Also I actually played some current gen shit while on holiday on my little bro's PS4. Fallout 4 was a shocking downgrade from New Vegas. Instead of stats and numbers for skill checks you get color coded keywords and other hollywood gaming expositional bullshit. Classic Fisher Price'ening for the plebs. Will avoid. Just Cause 3 is fucking sick though and it'll be my first pickup when I get an XBone

I started playing Root Letter for the Vita (it's also on the PS4). It's a mystery VN similar to Phoenix Wright; you walk around looking for clues and then occasionally have to wring information out of people by presenting them with evidence and pointing out contradictions. The interface is first-person with location nodes that you travel between, also like PW.

The story is about a guy that decides to look up his high school penpal from 15 years ago, only to find out that she apparently died 25 years ago. You go back through her letters one at a time, and in each chapter you're tracking down the people and places that she wrote about in that letter. Seems dece.

Finished Quake yesterday. Quake II looks boring, not keen on that at the moment. Instead, I've moved on to Arcane Dimensions, a really popular map (pack) that came out in recent years. It's been really fun so far. Some of the maps are gigantic and feature new enemy types and weapons. Quake just plays really, really well.

if you play quake 2 you gotta use the console to enable hard+ mode. it shortens or eliminates a lot of stun animations on enemies. without it its super easy to kill most enemies in the game.

Lately, this is what I play: GW2, Astroneer and Rocket League.

I like Astroneer, but it's in pre-alpha and I've done pretty much all you can do. Rocket League is really fun but I am getting the sense it's hard to find beginners at this point in matchmaking.

I'd like to get back into Black Desert Online and Hands of Fate. Played a little Hands of Fate the other night. Underrated game.

Just got Kingdom Hearts 2.8.  Man, been a long ass time since I played a KH game.  Somewhat excited, somewhat like it's been so long can't really get hyped for an hour or two demo.  Will report back on how it is later today.

Wow, just looked it up and last real game (Dream Drop Distance) was 2012.  5 years since the last KH game, and DDD wasn't even particularly good or advanced the plot much; was just a filler game.  Last meaty KH story stuff was BBS in 2010.  Kinda surprised KH3 isn't done already, Osaka KH was pretty efficient going from BBS -> DDD.  Oh well, let's see if this .8 prologue things gets me on-board again.  I've been in media blackout so I don't know anything over than it's a short Aqua story.  Does it even have any disney in it?

Wow, just looked it up and last real game (Dream Drop Distance) was 2012.  5 years since the last KH game, and DDD wasn't even particularly good or advanced the plot much; was just a filler game.  Last meaty KH story stuff was BBS in 2010.  Kinda surprised KH3 isn't done already, Osaka KH was pretty efficient going from BBS -> DDD.  Oh well, let's see if this .8 prologue things gets me on-board again.  I've been in media blackout so I don't know anything over than it's a short Aqua story.  Does it even have any disney in it?

There are TV ads/promotional pieces broadcast here now, and I had NO IDEA it was Kingdom Hearts until the last little bit of them. It looked like Square, but not Disney, and then at the very ending Mickey and Goofy showed up. It was... I dunno, burying the lead?

Kingdom Hearts 2.8

KHX movie - Looks nice, seems to have some story importance for KH3, utterly boring.  Makes Kingsglaive seem very exciting.

KH.02 Aqua story - Oh boy, I don't know about this.  It's oppressive, dark, difficult and lifeless.  Feels like a tech demo slice.  The combat is WEIRD, it's like the BBS team took whatever slight depth/challenge BBS had and amped it up 10 fold to fight off the perception KH is button mashy.  You cannot button mash in this.  Enemies that are fire will set you on fire, water you can't hit, spiked enemies will knock you back with damage.  You have to actually use magic to counter elements before you can attack, lots of parts, especially bosses are nothing but just defense & parry forcing like the Terra final boss in BBS.  On one hand there some neat sprinklings of skill shown, and one or two of the boss fights is kinda cool.  It's also better in the 2nd half of it where you have more combat options.  On the other hand the camera REALLY sucks like KH cameras kinda do, especially dealing with fast moving huge bosses that hit-stun you constantly so you can't move or break out of getting hit until you're at 1hp over and over.  The hit-stun and camera issues were really frustrating for me.  There's a boss type you fight 3 times and all 3 times its a pain in the ass because of the camera.  Definitely the hardest piece of KH I've ever played in the series.  I kinda hope KH3 is a bit more "fun" in the combat.

Also graphically it's still a work in progress.  It's unlocked hovering between 60fps->30fps with framepacing judder I think.  Another lovely bit that effects the very tiny just defense windows that you miss and get hit-stunned into oblivion.  :|  When it is 60fps, it's pretty nice but I wish it was locked 30fps if they can't get 60fps.  I don't know if this is different on a normal PS4 as I'm playing on Pro.  Also while the graphics look like somebody's first month with UE4.0 stock environments, the character models are weird.  The hair looks bad on everyone, like PS2/PS3 hair on PS4 doll CG model skin & clothes bodies.

I'm also not really feeling the CG doll people art style.  Loading up DDD, even with 3DS graphics I really prefer the look of DDD to Aqua's story.  The clean, colorful art style of KH1/2/BBS/DDD is a lot more appealing and works better with Disney stuff for me than CG looking Disney and Square.  Definitely jury still out on this.

Story-wise, the Aqua .2 prologue is worthless filler that adds nothing and is literally just a tech demo for 2 hours with a bunch of heartless boss fights throughout.  The KHX Movie has more plot movement/relevance.

I used to be huge in KH, but didn't care for this much.  Hoping it's just the usual RPGs make bad demos thing and KH3 will be good stuff whenever it's done.

Bebpo, if I've got DDD and have yet to play it should I stick with that copy or get the new upscale version?

If you don't care about money, might as well go with HD.  3DS screen res is low, controls are more comfortable on a comtroller.  That being said it was just an ok game.  Worth maybe $20, so wouldn't pay more than that for 2.8.

I don't remember if DDD had any touch controls that might have transition issues.  Been five years and it was an unmemorable game.

Finished Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice last night. The best non-trilogy game IMO. But if I can be honest...I can't see too many more Ace Attorney games in the future unless the series goes completely left. Newer games aren't bad but it all just feels....past it's prime at this point.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone seems a lot more challenging than the other Project Diva games, at least F2 and X. The charts seem a lot tougher. I'm having trouble getting anything higher than Cleared on Normal mode.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Sounds like I'm skipping KH 2.8 then.

Installed Quake II. Couldn't resist after all. First impression: The weapons so far feel shockingly garbage. The climb on the machine gun is comical. Why are the explosions polygonal and so smoothly animated? Impact is rather important for explosions. And call me crazy, but I think Quake has aged better, visually. At least the level geometry is still interesting, if very square. Hope it gets better further on.

if you play quake 2 you gotta use the console to enable hard+ mode. it shortens or eliminates a lot of stun animations on enemies. without it its super easy to kill most enemies in the game.
Apparently this is the name of the mode, while the correct command for it is "Skill 3". The source port I'm using allows you to pick it from the start (as Nightmare). Disabling the generous hit stun helps a lot, but the enemies still run around like headless chickens. I wonder if they designed medium with keyboard aim in mind.

ATTN: Clash Royale fans

Star Wars Force Arena is a MOBA/CR hybrid and it's really, really good. I highly recommend it.
