I'd suggest looking up a build from someone with more experience.
The game already has its occasional traps and asshole enemies (e.g. there's that fire caster mob right after the first village that has caused quite a bit of newbie and noob grief). Respeccing halfway through is expensive and time intensive, and as you can see from Borys above, the game expects you to stay on your toes, so starting out with a bit of a stable foundation and going from there once you have developed a feel for the mechanics is a good idea.
Be prepared to abandon your first few characters midway through, honestly. If the game manages to reel you in, you will already not mind, though.
It's F2P, so you won't lose anything. It's a great game, so give it a chance. At worst, you'll just tag along with a vet and shoot the shit.
