Twilight Zone 2019

Watched the first two episodes of this last night

The Comedian: Kumail Nanjiani plays an unfunny version of himself and is granted Death Note powers by a stoned Tracy Morgan.

Nightmare at 30,000 Feet: Same premise as the classic episode, but with podcasts, Arabs, and Russians instead of a gremlin.

Overall they weren’t too great. The premises were interesting enough, but the execution was not there. I’ll probably keep watching since there’s not much like it currently airing and there has to be at least one good episode.

Santa Clarita Diet is pretty funny.
I usually don't like these style of bubbly, quirky comedies, but this one has some solid jokes fairly consistently, and Olyphant is really good as a goofy mofo, wasn't expecting that, since i've always seen him play the badass.
They still cant manage to make the teenager characters interesting or particularly funny though.

The order is pretty bad but I like it.  Also, I have had a crush on Katharine Isabelle since before the trade towers fell so that also helps.

Ok I lied this might be great - the start of episode 2 one character is giving a sketch artist description of a werewolf and the guy is like 'ok short snout or longer?', 'longer', '...I think I found something' and it cuts to the computer screen which is just the Wikipedia article on werewolfs ROFL

Disney+ will have a bunch of cool-sounding shit (and that show about the guy who died in Rogue One??) that no one will actually bother to watch, but at least it's just $6.99/month and allows downloading.

My wife is enjoying SHOOTER, the tv series based on the Mark Wahlberg vehicle. It's alright, but holy cow, is it ever catering to the Trump-electing, gun loving, lazy thinking conspiracy-focused heartland crowd. Hilariously, Ryan Phillippe's first role was on a soap opera as a gay teenager.

Been watching Hanna on Prime.

That movie was fantastic, an elegant fusion of spy movie and faerie tale. What's wrong with you?

Been watching What we do in the Shadows TV - It's been ok, worth watching, but not as clever/well-written as the movie imo. I liked this week's episode, ep4. Was pretty funny. I still feel like this is either gonna find it's groove or it's gonna get old real quick. Definitely in it for the whole season at least.

Yeah that shits depressing.

Arguably one of the best TV writers ever and the guy never even got the chance to see any of his post-NYPD Blue visions to real completion. And so many ideas that went nowhere because HBO had him locked in and were too busy committing to tons of subpar trash because they had Hollywood names attached.

Man Hank Schrader is one of the best written and acted characters in TV history.

His arc is just awesome, particularly on a re-watch as you realize the entire time he's a bit of a genius despite his goofy bro-y cop tough guy act.   And the fact they address the violent / cynical cop attitude and the emotional toil he goes through is great as well.

Those last lines really drive it home too. Great character.

Watched Haunting of Hillhouse.
Mixed bag i thought.

On the one hand, managing to keep the horror up for a season of television, is feat in and of itself, and they did a good job of it, plus the characters were all interesting and diversified enough to work well and carry the show swiftly.
On the other hand, there were way too many over-acted (and overwrote) monologues with "DRAMA, I AM NOW ACTING!" moments, to the point were it got kind of cringe inducing at times; and as for the horror bits, they were effective, but sort of a kitchen sink of clichès.
I also thought the last episode was a happy ending, tonally very much out of place; an anti climactic resolution to the whole thing, over explaining everything, showing too much, removing all tension.
I like horror stories that leave you with a sense of dread once you're done, but the 10th episode of Hillhouse leaves you with the impression that hey, the haunted mansion is actually a pretty sweet place to die in.

That said, i was really skeptical about the idea of a horror TV show, because it's a genre i always thought only worked in short bursts, but it won me over pretty quickly.
I can't see how they could do a season 2, but i'm in.

This show fucking sucked and was 4 episodes too long like every season of every Netflix series. It could have EASILY been a single feature length movie and it would have been better off.
As a movie it would've been completely unremarkable, another Conjuring clone.
The idea of making a horror TV show was the whole gimmick, and handling multiple characters around one event is more or less how it worked out.
With some better writers and more cohesive horror it could've been good.

I agree it went on too long, but not even close to stuff like Daredevil, Punisher, etc.
Then again, most TV shows don't justify going on for more than 6 episodes in general.

Checked some Supernatural episodes lately and this seems to have gone beyond rock bottom. I mean it was always a stupid guilty pleasure, but at this point I can barely describe these Dragonball GT-tier things that are going on. Like now their mother is back alive and fighting with them against a mafia of evil Roger Moore Bonds. But as long as they keep providing gif material, keep the show on, I guess.

Trying to like Netflix' Cuckoo because I can't get enough Andy Samberg, but apparently I can. The cringe-humor is pretty epic, and I like all the actors individually, but somehow it's not equal to the sum of its parts.

I like giant dadoo a lot - mostly because I like Greg Davies and have a bit of a crush on the daughter.   Also compared to a lot of britsh sitcoms - its very Americanized and slightly tone-neutral or flat which is what I felt worked the least.

Watching and enjoying The Blacklist, but eps 6 and 7 are already starting to look teh generik procedural and it's making me sad. Spader elevates the material, which I can't say for the lead actress opposite him. But admittedly they didn't have a lot to work with in 6 and 7.

Also, "reaches out" and "try reaching out" and "I reached out to my friends in the pentagon"… BLAH fucking, blah-blah. There were at least 4 instances of "reach out" in ep 7, maybe try "contacted" or "got in touch with" or "liaised" you lazy fucking writers?

Anyone watch Into the Badlands? I’ve always wanted to check it out because it looks dumb kung fu fun, plus it has Nick Frost. I hear this third season is the last, so thinking about starting it.
