I think they're all worth playing if you're interested in the stories.  And if you're going to play them all, you might as well start with the first game, because then it's straight uphill from there.

Glad you read my article, Himu.  I can't believe I'm writing a giant RPG-focused weekly column and you are literally the only one of my RPG-loving online best buds who has even looked at it.

Well, there are strangers out there at least who like reading what you got to say even if your buds are droppin the ball. I forget that you content producers need active positive reinforcement to know what you're doing is good stuff, it's so hard though when you read a nice long feature and all you have to add is 'yup'

I've committed though to making active use of the Like button on thebore.com

I haven't found any interesting RPGs on iOS yet so I'll give your columns a read.

In other news, Monument Valley is awesome. I played through it last night.

I wasn't being fair to Final Fantasy Dimensions. It's definitely a grower even if it doesn't immediately show off its strengths.

Each of the following is down to $0.99:
Castle of Illusion (usually $10!)
Storm Casters
LEGO Lord of the Rings

Nice, I'll be picking these up.

Haha, it's not much better using a software keyboard on a phone.  Thanks for reading, though.  Awkward silence in the chat room when I asked the others.  Shows what mobile is up against when it comes to convincing the hardcore.

BTW, I read and enjoyed your Bard's Tale piece as well; having played and been utterly owned by the Apple //e version of the game, I was surprised to find out this was considered a forgiving game at the time. Admittedly, I also tried Wizardry around that time, and couldn't seem to keep anyone alive... ever. Maybe this explains why I don't have any love in my heart for CRPGs at all?

Still the best iOS RPG for me, The Quest:

(Image removed from quote.)

Almost 100 hours long, too.

Oh shit, game is awesome. I remember playing the hell out of this on my Dell Axim on a flight to Australia to cover an Xbox media event.

Any chances DQ8 will be updated for better frame rate?

Unlike others I don't mind the lack of voice acting and orchestrated ost. My issue is one of presentation and control. I just keep wanting to play it horizontally, and I'm amazed they didn't make an option for it. DQ8 loses a lot of its great details and charm when the camera is pulled back like this. And I prefer being up and close.

So can you explain why Japanese target audience would prefer portrait mode? To play on the to on crowded trains where you'll have more room to yourself of you aren't sticking your elbows out like with landscape? Then why put dq7 on 3ds then? I'm just confused by the whole thing. Why do they prefer portrait?

I thought DQ8 in portrait mode was pretty awesome. Being able to play a game that only really needs one handed input is enjoyable.

ASCII sold a lot of their Grip controllers back in the day for good reason.

I can understand the appeal of playing one handed. I played Suikoden one handed. The problem is that dq8 is a 3d game and doesn't lend well to one handed play, in my experience. Maybe I could use tips in controlling it?

Yeah I can see that with the 3D camera. I do tend to swipe a lot in towns just to see where I'm looking but it works well enough overall. I would've preferred an option but the novelty of playing it portrait outweighs the inconvenience for me.

Any tips for controlling? With 3d games I like controlling cameras a lot to see a great view a lot, so having to drop my thumb and use the camera feels kind of unwieldy and slow. But again, I may not be doing it right, and I'm sure the goal was optimum comfort.

At Fort Prospect andddd, I think this is better than the ps2 version. It feels more balanced. I've beaten DQ8 once and gotten halfway through the game on a replay but never finished that one, and I've never really had this kind of trouble I'm having. Trouble being relative. I did my usual thing, run to the tree to fetch the tools quest, went to the waterfall cave at level 5, and Yangus and Hero still had a bit of defense issues in the cave. I seriously have to use some basic strategy on the early monsters, and I've never had to do that before. I have no clue what's going on. My equipment is up to par and these monsters are hitting Yangus and Diego for like 10-12 hp a pop on the way to Fort Prospect, and I'll be fighting 3-4 of them at once. It's really refreshing and it just feels right. I think it may be because I'm saving my Skill Points but who knows. I think this could be a symptom of the lower random battle rate, because it's not a symptom of me sucking.

Battles are much  more fun to get through too because they're not as slow anymore.

I also have to give kudos towards the portrait view. In the Alexndria Tower dungeon, I was disoriented and lost a few times because due to the new viewpoint, you see less of the screen, forcing you to explore more thoroughly. Something about it makes me get lost more. I think they did a good job with that as the dungeons are something lacking in ps2 DQ8.

I just feel really good about this point. I'm not big on the game feeling cramped - though, as said, this works to a benefit in a way - but the overall thing just enhances a game I've already played and loved. I always go back and forth with DQ. 8 was my first, and I've always considered it my favorite, but it had a long way from best DQ for me due to the slow battles and lowered difficulty. So far, the mobile version is fixing my main grievances.

Yet people seem to think it's a bad port. Oh well. More love for me! :heartbeat

In other news, beat my Chaos Rings replay. :heartbeat Will get to 2 after DQ8.

999 (DS game) is 99 cents today.  vaguely remember something about the iphone version cutting out the puzzles so it might just be a visual novel.

i like the story of 999 but there is a very... MGS2-ish twist at the end which is why i'm not sure it's for everybody

Yeah can we have other opinions? Is it worth checking out?

the whole thing is basicaly a mystery so if you enjoy other similiar mystery related game like phoenix wright and don't mind the story becoming non-sensical near the end, sure why not

the only things i liked in 999 were the atmosphere in the puzzle rooms and the music so yeah, not sure about this mobile version. the story was whatever, the writing (which is to say, the prose) is real clunky and bad and for some reason hi-res instead of pixels makes the character art look even more low rent deviantart and i never liked the designs to begin with.

but for 99 cents might as well try it out, don't believe the people who go on about how the twist is ONLY POSSIBLE ON DS, i'm sure it's simulated fine here, not worth the extra 20 bucks in the slightest.
