I had this discussion today, because I was watching cable news and some shrink was talking about how all these kids are getting bulled on the Internet and it's destroying their emotional well-being.

... I'm sorry, but remember when we were kids and we were bullied in person? Or instead of a dozen or so kids making fun of you on Facebook, it was a dozen or so kids laughing at you in real life?

I understand social networking and personal communication devices have reduced a lot of IRL social contact for young people, but I find it laughable that they are worse off today than we were. We'd get our asses whooped and made fun of to our face; that sucks way more.

One day my uncle gets chased home by the kids across the street, they beat him and he chickened out. Grandpa was at home, and told him if he didn't go out there and defend himself, he'd have to defend his ass from grandpa's belt. Guess which option he chose?

That didn't make sense to me. My father told me not to fight because it'd get on your record or something, and if there's anything that's a death sentence for a minority it's something like a fight on your record. So my father discouraged me from fighting. Yet my mother was the complete opposite and said if someone mistreated me to the point where I felt it was within my rights to defend myself, I should.
