I was fifteen when I read Blankets I think. so that isn't too far from where I was at the time  :lol

regarding Carnet de Voyage, no, my library didn't carry it last I saw. Moved cities since so I guess it's worth trying again.

That is freakin' nuts. He could have just sent his publisher a font of 10 numbers...instead he did all that.

For all its skill and passion, Blankets is a teenaged work, no getting around it. I'm hoping Habibi is much more mature. Some artists just get stuck on those teen years though, for a variety of reasons. Charles Burns is the other notable.

Also, possibly the best Batman story ever is back in print in hardcover. If you haven't seen it, the hardcover has a ton of additional content by David Mazzuchelli that is REALLY worth a look. Not just the usual prelim sketches - actual drawn pages that illustrate his process and thinking. Get on this shit if you don't got it

Bebpo - no-one really knows yet as it has not been released or reviewed. It's some kind of Muslim love story. Blankets is emo teen romance coming of age and ditching your 1st your GF angsty/realizing that religion is bullshit and wanking is ok crap but extremely beautiful and well-crafted nonetheless

The Gene Colan book is great stuff!  His artwork with Klaus Janson on inks looks sooo good!  The stories are presented in sequential order rather than grouped by title.  It looks like the creative teams bounced from Batman to Detective alternating each month.

Grant Morrison interview in Rolling Stone is great stuff

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/grant-morrison-on-the-death-of-comics-20110822?print=true#

Do you still hang out with your former protégé Mark Millar at all?
No.

Is that an estranged situation?
It's a can of worms. I met Mark when he was 18, and I really got on with him, because he laughed at all my jokes. He has the same sense of humor as me, he's very dark, and has that sense of humor, so we bonded. I used to phone him every day, and we ended up doing some work together on 2000 AD, which went well. It was funny stuff, we'd meet in the pub and get drunk and do this Big Dave strip, which was a comedy strip, and obviously, he was trying to get into American comics, so I got him on in Swamp Thing, and they asked me to write the book but I said, "Let's get Mark in, let's give him a job," so I consulted with him on the stories, and so on through the Nineties.

When he got the Authority book, his star started to rise, and at that point, he felt he was in my shadow and he had to get out, and the way to get out was to do this fairly uncool split. It was quite hard, I felt, but he had to make his own way, and he was in denial that I'd been there, because I saw a lot of his work had been plotted or devised, even dialogue suggestions were done by me right up until the point of The Ultimates. It was seen by him as a dimunition of his position, even though it wasn't, I was quite proud of him as a mentor. He's done well without me, he has his own style, he does his own stuff. It was kind of that archetype, you get caught up in that story.

You came out and acknowledged this, but that was after the estrangement?
Yeah. Before that, everyone in the business knew that I was working with him, it was obvious, I was 10 years older, I was already successful. His star rose, and that history became sidelined.

He still lives in Glasgow, is there a chance of bumping into him?
There's a very good chance of running into him, and I hope I'm going 100 miles an hour when it happens.

He says all that much more diplomatically in Supergods - I think he's blatantly searching for some easy headlines here. Having said that, the bad blood seems to be genuine.

A lot of the comics internet is focusing on some very bland statements about Siegel & Shuster though - it seems anything short of calling for the heads of DC for their ill-treatment of these creators is tantamount to murder. whatever. I do note a huge disconnect between his portrayal of business at Marvel and at DC. He's certainly not above kissing corporate ass at this stage, which I think is just repugnant to those fans who've been with him since he was a genuine counterculture icon in his King Mob days. But fuck, the dude is 51 and creatively far from dead yet...that's better than I expect from most artists I appreciate. Very few Angry Young Men stay angry into their 50s after they meet with success like he has.

Secret Society of Super-Villians is totally nuts and totally 70s.  I can't even begin to go into it.  The art is largely horrible though and the story is uh also horrible, but it's also kind of insane in a weird homage to Kirby's 4th world (Darkseid!  Kalibak Vs Gorilla Grodd!) and full of these strange characterizations and leaps of logic which are as breath taking as any high wire act.  In the first issue some of the Flash's rogue's gallery are so broke they're sticking up a jewelery store and complaining about only getting $10k from their fence, two issues later, Boomerang has a CUSTOM BUILT BOOMERANG SPACESHIP HE USES TO HIGHJACK THE ISS.  If you're broke, you could have maybe sold that.

It also features the worst cameo by a Kirby character ever.  The Black Racer shows up on the cover of an issue like he's going to be a huge part of the story, but nope.  One panel.  The next issue, he's waved away by Darksied so he only shows like like 5 panels total and does nothing.

I'm about halfway through with this book so it could go even crazier, but man, this joint is popping.  It's like a turkish b-movie rip off of suicide squad.

I read Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, finally - pretty good, but an artifact of the time - Moore did much better work in the same field just a few years later. My biggest takeaway from it was "wow, Gaiman sure ripped off Alan Moore's Swamp Thing for the first 20 issues of Sandman!"

Got caught up on Morrison-Bats (I'd last stopped at B&R 12). I respect it a lot more than I like it, and reading it is like learning a foreign Batman language, where the individual issues and sentences never quite gel, but the overarching narrative is, in retrospect, quite cleverly constructed.

The best thing I've read recently is Fraction's Casanova. Yes, it's B-grade Jerry Cornelius fanfic, but it's 2-shades shy of Umbrella Academy-crazy, and the two arcs are drawn by Ba/Moon, respectively. And hey, at least it's better than Gideon Stargrave!

Invincible just seems a little stupid to me. How could a race like the Viltrumites exist? How would evolution ever produce such a species? At least with the Kryptonians, it was justified as being some weird quirk with the yellow sun. The Viltrumites just defy all logic.

Who cares? It's suitably terrifying to think of "What if Superman was lying to all of us? And there is an army of them which have no compunction about turning into $20 bath mats and anal sex toys... not necessarily in that order."

Why does that bother you? It's an actual separate timeline it seems, so JSA would appear to be starting over free of continuity. Robinson might be good on this, I dunno. He has been shit for years and his JLA was diabolical but you never know! It seems the kind of book on which he could thrive - slow burn plots free of interference from other books, retro setting which he loves... And come on, no matter what else happens, DC is not going to let valuable copyrights lapse.

I'm torn about Johns-Lee JLA. I kinda want to get it just 'cause it's a big event, and it casts a vote for same day digital comics. On the other hand, it's Johns and Lee, which is like the definition of corporate mediocrity. I'm sure i'll hate it.

On the positive tip though! I will buy, not steal, a good dozen or so of the relaunch books and probably steal most of the rest too.

First the stuff I'll likely buy at least 6 months worth of, assuming the current creative teams stick around (or improve! god knows DC's talent pool is miserable right now):

Action Comics - Grant Morrison, will buy anything
Batwoman - JW Williams, will buy anything
Batman - Been following Scott Snyder's Detective so why not continue? He's not Alan Moore but he's pretty good. The art is a huge downgrade from Jock and Francavilla sadly.
Justice League Dark - Peter Milligan so who knows. Could be genius, could be tossed-off tosh.
Stormwatch - Paul Cornell, the Authority characters and Martian Manhunter, sounds like a larf
Demon Knights - Paul Cornell, the Demon, medieval setting, sounds like a larf
All-Star Western - Palmiotti, Grey, Moritat? Fuck yes.
OMAC - for the amazing Keith Giffen Kirby pastiche art alone, doubt Dan DiDio's writing is up to much
Batman Inc - not part of the launch but may as well be. Still on board forever despite that fairly horrible last issue.

various maybes, will at least check out a few issues or when they are cheap, or if I see some good reviews or twitter enthusiasm
Frankenstein - Lemire's mini was ok, not amazing. Could be interesting if he goes mad with it.
Resurrection Man - DnA - got a real soft spot for these guys, loved all their Marvel Cosmic stuff. (oh, and if anyone wants to read something like Invincible, you could do a lot worse than their run on Nova!). This is just a bizarre concept that could turn out pretty cool.
Swamp Thing - Snyder, pretty ambivalent on this one really as i basically dislike the concept for reasons I cannot well explain but he has hyped it up quite well
Grifter - hey, I like Nate Edmondson. Who is Jake Ellis is fucking GREAT
Legion of Superheroes - I still like the old Levitz/Giffen LoS stuff and this is Levitz doing LoS so worth a punt at least. Of course i haven't read any of the scans i have of his last couple of years on basically the exact same book so it is rather fiscally imprudent of me to spend actual cash on this. Still, worth a few issues i guess

Will probably have to update with more too!

Well, reintroducing Earth-2 right away doesn't seem like much of a continuity sweep... it's hard to take DC seriously when we have the same writers, artists, and now apparently multiverse as pre-wipe.

well, I thought the story was pretty solid, but hardly outstanding. He's not very solid on sci-fi at all, unfortunately. All buzzwords and no substance. The reveal was a yawn. The Poser art really really bothered me though, although there were a few striking scenes. Overall it just didn't do anything for me.

"DC claims there’s no Psycho Pirate-type loophole in their new continuity where someone “remembers” the old continuity."

(dot dot dot)

"This weekend at Fan Expo Canada, Dan DiDio confirmed an ongoing rumor: James Robinson and Nicola Scott are working on a new Justice Society of America book -- that takes place on Earth-Two."

:facepalm

Well, reintroducing Earth-2 right away doesn't seem like much of a continuity sweep... it's hard to take DC seriously when we have the same writers, artists, and now apparently multiverse as pre-wipe.

The point is blatantly not to wipe continuity - that much has been made clear from the start (i.e. Batman Inc was always going to follow on directly). I thought they were being pretty up-front about only changing continuity for struggling titles that needed a change, i.e Superman.

The biggest issue is more-or-less insurmountable - they just don't have a lot of talent. If they keep selling 100,000-plus maybe they'll be able to steal some better talent but in the short run, we're just going to see a new coat of paint on the old mediocrity. No editorial mandate or trickery can overcome that really.

comixology had a deal on the whole series for $25 recently, pretty awesome deal. It'll probably come around again at some point.

"by which you mean me, i guess" -- What am I, chopped liver?

I have Atlantis Fantasybooks in Santa Cruz keeping a box for me, and I pick up stuff when I go back, or have friends grab it and ship it over. Lately I've been buying trade paperbacks through Amazon.co.jp, which have reasonable prices overall and only take a week or so to arrive.

I have some .cbz/.cbr comicz, but honestly I'm not into reading them on a computer in front of me, and the iPod Touch screen is just a little too small to be practical for it. Also, CDisplay is my favorite comic reading app, and it's not on Mac.

Is there a retail market for Western comics in Japan? Do any stores import them?

There are a few stores here and there that do import comics, but they are marked-up.  I paid like 800 yen for one issue of a JLA comic once.

Some comics are also translated into Japanese.  The manga section at a bookstore I used to frequent had some old early 90's era X-Men graphic novels available.  Never saw anyone looking at them though, and they were placed right beside the hentai-porn-whatever.

On August 31st, everything you were following will go away and you'll lose interest and stop buying comics for a while

Your link is broken, and yes, though she originated in the Dini-verse.

I read Anya's Ghost last night. It's a young adult story I guess but I enjoyed it a lot. Neil Gaiman calls it a masterpiece on the cover blurb which is going a bit far, but still, it is a great little story, beautifully told.  My kid had a ball looking through it too.
