52 is supposed to be good though, at least, right? That's what I've heard on the Internets.

52 - definitely some good parts, but a lot of tedious/ridiculous/pointless stories in there as well. I like the obviously Grant Morrison bits best. I read it month by month and a lot of months, I was just like, I don't care about this AT ALL. I wouldn't mind reading the whole thing over a couple of days - I bet it's a lot more compelling that way.

Read all of Planet Hulk, following all of the Secret Invasion storyline.  Secret Invasion was definitely better.

I didn't read Infinite Crisis or 52 either, so maybe that's next.   Also finally got through the first Freedom Fighters TPB.  It was better than the awful, awful Battle For Bludhaven, but was still a bit hard to finish.

I read Identity Crisis, it was pretty cool except at the end when everyone except Batman thinks that Captain Boomerang committed all the crimes. It doesn't take the world's great detective to figure out that Boomerang's bumbling home invasion was totally different than when Sue was killed. He doesn't even have any abilities other than being able to throw a freaking boomerang really good, for crissakes!

Then I read The OMAC Project & Superman: Sacrifice. OMAC was okay, I like seeing some Booster Gold + Blue Beetle action, even if Blue Beetle did get killed, which kinda sucked. I flipped through the new Blue Beetle comics at the comic store, and it looked kinda gay. Superman: Sacrifice was awesome in it's lawl-worthiness. Max Lord steals Superman's brain! :lol How powerful of a telepath is he that he can take over Superman's mind despite being hundreds of miles away, and having Superman know what's happening? And not even Martian Manhunter can stop him? WTF :lol Even Zatanna has to touch people's heads to erase their minds. But the real hilarity is when he uses his mind control to make Superman think that Lois is making out with Brainiac or that he's in a literal boxing match with Darkseid, complete with Lois ringside in some slavegirl/groupie getup. :lol Pretty amazing stuff.

Batman's back in full-force now.

Batman, Inc. #1 and Batman: The Return (one shot) are out today.  That's a double dose of Morrison.  Cormac will be pleased.

The Morrison-Bats schedule has been crazy recently - clearly Ryan Sook held up the whole show with Return of Bruce Wayne 5. Since then we've had a flood of pent-up stuff. And it's all been awesome.

I didn't like#6, but Returns #1-5 were fun reads.  Hated the ending, but I was there for the whole Batman throughout various periods thing anyway.

So now there's gonna be a whole bunch of Bat books.  I think it's two-three comics with Dick as Batman and two with Bruce.  Not sure what I am going to start/stick with.

I seriously doubt the 2 books written by artists are going to be any good (Batman and Dark Knight). Batman Inc should be great, Detective should be great with Scott Snyder (American Vampire has been great) and Jock and BaR might be ok but I don't have high hopes. Otherwise, Batwoman is a must cause of JH Williams III. Everything else is eminently missable, I'd say.

Nothing in the Batverse that I know of. Paul Cornell is doing a 3 issue arc on BaR, then Peter Tomasi is taking over. I've liked Paul Cornell generally but Knight and Squire was pretty weak, so not wildly excited. Peter Tomasi has done one thing of quality that I know of (The Mighty).

Presumably Morrison is working on the Multiversity project for next summer and so forth. Very little has been announced beyond Batman Inc.

So I'm reading Countdown to Final Crisis and yeah it pretty much sucks like everyone said, but then OMG!

The look on Superman's face makes the entire series. :lol  :lol :lol

Then later Jimmy makes it with a freaky alien babe! (with a little something-something for ladies!)

Then you've got Black Mary Marvel going pycho-bitch on everyone, some semi-sapphic scenes with Holly Robinson and Harley Quinn in togas, and gay jokes at the expense of The Trickster (portrayed below by Mark Hamill).

(Oh sorry, that's actually the straight man of the group, it's Pied Piper that's gay.)

How can you hate this series?

also posted in the WDYB thread but probably more relevant here:

This showed up from amazon today:

100 covers from DC's 75 year history. It is the classic YMMV product but there are about 15-20 in there that I'd happily put on my wall. So I went to my local crafts shop and got some cheap-ass frames, all half-price. I cut some cheap card to fit and just pasted the covers on top. It's utterly ghetto but that says 'comics' to me a lot more than expensive reproductions under glass, in a way. Big, garish cheap and disposable!

Here's the 3 I settled on (to begin with - the shop only had 3 frames!). Top is Animal Man #5, the classic 'The Coyote Gospel', which is a 4th wall-breaking exercise in existential terror based on the Roadrunner cartoon. One of the best single issue comics of the period. Cover by Brian Bolland, who does very little interior work but who is probably best known for The Killing Joke with Alan Moore. Written by Grant Morrison of course.

On the bottom left is Batman Year 100 #1, by writer/artist Paul Pope. I fucking love his art, it's just savage and lush and sexy. His Batman is genuinely weird and terrifying but very human at the same time.

On the bottom right is Ronin #1 by Frank Miller, which may be the first comic I can remember reading that really broadened my appreciation of the medium. This came out when I was about 12 yrs old and it was pretty mind-blowing, combining as it did elements from manga (Lone Wolf and Cub/Shogun Assasin, Akira etc) with European Heavy Metal-type artists like Moebius along with Frank's own post-Kirby superhero madness. It doesn't quite come together the way his later work did, but it is probably the most interesting thing he has ever done, for its ambition if nothing else. I have the Absolute edition, and I'm SERIOUSLY considering cutting it up to frame it as well. Such a beautiful book.

from the Buy thread -

Whole bunch of comics-related stuff has showed up from amazon, part of my yearly Xmas binge shopping:

SOLO by Brendan McCarthy:

Just insane psychedelic art.

Prison Pit #1-2 by Johnny Ryan (#2 pictured):

The INCAL Classic Collection by Jodorowsky and Moebius. This is one of 750 produced in English, at the original Euro size and coloring:

Green Lantern: Will World (for the incredible art by the late, great Seth Fisher. Only tangentially a GL story really. It reads much more like Little Nemo in Slumberland by Windsor McCay)

Best of American Splendor by Harvey Pekar etc. Best toilet book ever! I love Harvey.

Krazy & Ignatz 1927-1928: "Love Letters in Ancient Brick" (Krazy Kat)

Powr Mastrs #1-3 by CF. (#3 pictured below) One of the strangest comics ever published, and a book of the year candidate.

Hellboy - Library Collection #1-3 (only 1 pictured below). These share the production values of DC's Absolutes, but are far cheaper for some reason. No slipcase but almost the same size and done on beautiful paper. The Mike Mignola art is a revelation at that size.

Duncan the Wonder Dog by Adam Hines - 800pgs of an alternate history in which animals can talk.

If n'Off by Brian Chippendale

Grant Morrison: Talking with Gods (DVD documentary)

and finally: Absolute All Star Superman

Don't even ASK what all of this cost. It isn't pretty.

Sorry, you made me look on amazon again and HOLY SHIT, the only re-seller on amazon is asking $799.99 for it. I never re-sell books but I would flip the CRAP out of it for that.

That would finance my plan to buy an original Brendan McCarthy canvas :o

That's a sumptuous series, and D.S. is a genuinely nice guy. I was working at a comic store during its original run, and he came by and signed stuff. I probably have a mylar bagged signed copy of #1 somewhere. And he introduced many comic fans to Betty Page, so we should all be extra thankful.

over the last year I've been gingerly sticking my toe into the comics world, a hobby that I had not pursued since I was about 12 years old.  I got a treasure trove of great stuff from a going-out-of-business sale and I'll be working through a considerable backlog in time.  Before I get to all that stuff (lotsa Garth Ennis) I worked through the entire collection of 100 Bullets the library had on hand.

I started reading it because I liked another book from the same author.  I'm a sucker for good crime stories, and the initial premise was great.  And it was great, for the first couple of volumes it was a captivating read.  Then things got convoluted, then the B-stories started taking over the space for the A-stories, and then the initial, anthology style 'revengers dilemma' stuff just about disappeared entirely to make room for a full time and boring as hell story about some shifty and all powerful conspiracy.  If the plot was at all clear it wouldn't be as much of a problem, but this shit gets murkier then a mud bath.

100 Bullets was almost a series at war with itself.  The only interesting characters would be the ones who die almost immediately, and the ones that stick around are ciphers who are trying desperately to out-badass each other to the point that nobody has any personality besides 'Kill!'.

Oh yeah, and just like this post, the ending sucks too.
