it was manageable when it was like two books but once you add some then pressure builds for crossovers and shit and then new creative teams want a clean slate to start their own bullshit and yadda yadda before you know it the world has been destroyed 3x and Peter Parker is dead and Cap is President et cetera

The current Ultimates run is just utterly ludicrous, apart from lousy art, i kind of love it. It's not in the least serious and spends a lot of time tweaking the noses of continuity nerds. For example, in mainstream Marvel, Nick Fury just basically switched from a white man to a black Sam Jackson to match the movie. In Ultimates, he just switched from Sam Jackson to white Nick Fury for no good reason whatsoever :lol

I actually liked a lot of the Ultimate stuff when it first came out, I remember especially liking Ultimate Spider-Man. Then Ultimatum happened and it became impossible to follow.

I do like Hellboy a lot, I've got most of the trades of that except for maybe the most recent two or three. It's very different from the movies, which I also like. Is BPRD more like the movies, where it's a squad of paranormal investigators going out and fighting supernatural forces, just without Hellboy?

Yeah, although most of the stuff i've read is one big storyline ('Plague of Frogs'). Get those hardcover collections and you're good to go. Great value, fantastic storytelling

He's a good writer, but his art is phenomenal. And he's evolved! Unlike many artists who just sort of do their one thing repeatedly, you can look back at early Mignola and it's not even the same human drawing this stuff.

well, the bad news there is that Mignola doesn't draw any of BPRD, apart from some covers and designs. The good news is that the artists he chooses are uniformly great. I think I've actually come to prefer Guy Davis on Hellboy, and it was a bit of a downer when Mignola came back for the current arc. Not much of one, of course, but still. If you get a chance to flip through the Hellboy Library Editions in a store, check out Davis' work on #6...just amazing

I remember getting one of the later Hellboys and reading the forward about how he had chosen a new artist that he really enjoyed working with, blah blab blah, and I remember thinking to myself "what is this shit?!" Then I read it and I thought, "Hey, this is pretty okay"

I just picked up a bunch of crap.

Chase-I like JH Williams art in Batwomen, so I thought I'd pick up the trade.

Y The Last Man DE 1-Yep, I'm going to jump into this. I'm really liking Saga and I hope this is just as good.

Batman The Black Glove DE-I hear this is the start of Grant Morrison's Batman run and well I'm probably the most excited about reading this.

Death The High Cost of Living-I'm a fan of Bachalo and well Gaiman is obviously well known. So it seemed like a good thing to pick up.

X-Force: Sex and Violence-Just stupid fun.

I finally read the New Krypton stuff. (Well, Last Son through to the reboot.) My biggest complaint is probably that I couldn't keep track of time. And a lot of times it wouldn't even say how long had happened between events. And some of that Nightwing/Flamebird stuff was :yuck

Grounded and Reign of Doomsday were written so people were pleading for a reboot right?

Shame about what became the conclusion to The Black Ring because I quite enjoyed that setup.

Now to figure out where the hell I left off in Fables or Walking Dead, or read all that Johns Green Lantern stuff since I noticed the library has like three copies of each trade. Or let stuff pile up for two more years or so. Or strike until DC brings back Checkmate. The Rucka version. And while he's at it he can bring back Gotham Central and set it during Morrison's whole run.

Maybe I'll just read Birds of Prey in hopes it comes close to what Catwoman eventually became.

i'm reading Birds of Prey right now and it's weird.  Super crazy cheesecake art with "Real Women"(tm) style relationships.  Kind of an odd disconnect.

It must be cheap as hell to produce a hardcover book nowadays. I'm noticing a flood of Golden Age and 1950s reprint hardcover collections cropping up, very esoteric stuff like ACG comics titles and such.

A comic about a slut?
But this time three or more sluts.  :drool

I was surprised how Catwoman's two series went from dumb 90s action schlock to heist-based to sorta noir-ish before Infinite Crisis butted in. Was wondering how Birds of Prey evolved when I saw how long it also ran. But this:
i'm reading Birds of Prey right now and it's weird.  Super crazy cheesecake art with "Real Women"(tm) style relationships.  Kind of an odd disconnect.
is totally acceptable. There was a whole part of Catwoman where it was being all serious about relationships and alcoholism/addictions and drama but drawn like the Batman animated series comics.

I think the Cassandra Batgirl series went through a similar art != story situation.

Props to Kevin Smith at least for editing the spoiler out of pt. 2 of the podcast with Morrison. I basically don't read news sites or go on twitter for most of the day 'cause I don't want NBA games spoiled for me so I was totally in the dark. I don't read previews because I buy digitally and thus don't need them, and why spoil yourself anyway

I'm sure the issue is still worth reading but it is intensely annoying not to be able to go into it cold. It's a big part of the appeal of serial comics ffs.

That cover even spoils the whole deal.  Why bother doing something shocking if you're going to give it all away upfront?  I wonder.

So there will be a mad rush for the issue when comic shops open on Wednesday. My shop already let everyone know it's first come, first served (unless it's on your saver already) and no new Batman Inc saver adds until AFTER Wednesday. It's usually a low-ordered book compared to Snyder's, so DC just put people into a frenzy for it.

I do not understand why someone who wasn't already reading the comic would care enough to pick it up. This is like part 96 in Morrison's run. If you don't like the character enough to pick up the main book he appears in, why would you care if he dies

I didn't like the character, but I think it is dumb to kill them off.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I don't like the character because I think there are too many damn Robins as it is. Batman goes through Robins faster than tissues. Plus I think it is dumb having Batman be a baby daddy.

I think it is dumb to kill him off because Batman's core motivation is the death of his parents, he's already driven by grief.  Adding grief over the loss of his son just lessens the impact of his parents' deaths

Robin has been part of Batman since NINETEEN FORTY so it's a bit absurd to cling to this idea of Batman as a loner. He's almost NEVER been a loner - since Day 1, Alfred was part of it, then Robin, then legions of others, including plenty of civilians like Gordon, Lucius Fox etc. These are not just supporting characters but people who know his identity and actively help him.

Now Spider-man, that's a fucking loner. Feared and hated, no friends, no-one knows his inner pain, not even his one living blood relative (yeah, there have been exceptions like MJ over the years but that's the status quo it usually returns to).

Other than Damian, all those characters are between 20-70 years old now though. And the copyrights must be kept up so they're not going away for very long.

The more I think about it, the more bullshit Death of the Family was. So many bizarre, plot-serving moments that contradict character and motivation. The Joker was the least subtle version ever, and the reason for the Bat-family gettin' salty will likely never be revealed. Just a pure plot-hammer. So unsatisfying.

My point is that it wouldn't be an extension of the character; it IS the character as he has been consistently portrayed almost since inception.

This was Morrison's whole point as well - I was never alone, the Bell was when I became Batman etc

There is definitely a bit of 'Snyder vs Morrison' going on as well, which must be politically motivated at some level - Morrison has Batman going 'I love you guys, let's make a big international crime-fighting corporation' and Snyder has them all gettin' mad at Bats and pulling away from him to leave him alone. Snyder has the better sales so he wins by default

Without getting into spoilers (although probably fair game by now?), the stuff he did was so ridiculous and so pointless and so ineffectual, it's hard to take him in any way seriously from now on, at least as written by Snyder. Snyder just took all the subtext from past interpretations of the Joker and made it THE TEXT. Like, he literally is in love with Batman. To the point he would rather die than kill Batman, can't even SEE Bruce Wayne and is physically aroused by Batman's mere presence. All of that is interesting to INFER but Snyder just has the Joker SAY it. Subtle he is not

Cormac, I hate to defend ManaByte, but that's been spoiled 17 ways to Sunday ... I guess you were fortunate to live in Japan but it's been in tons of media outlets (not just comic ones) front and center, there's a full-court media press with pre-release interviews from Morrison, etc. etc.

The cover alone is hugely obvious (I guess you didn't see that either) but it's been talked about for weeks even in the very casual comic circles I travel in.

I would honestly say that after RIP, a story in which Batman was supposed to die, and after a cliffhanger ending just a few issues back in which Robin was shot and killed in fact all part of master plan hahahaha, and one in which Batman (Dick) was shot in the head in a cliffhanger and not fucking killed in fact it was all part of master plan hahahha, even seeing the Robin RIP cover would not have convinced me that Robin would be actually dead and remain dead.

I mean, i'm STILL not 100% convinced. Maybe you guys have all read interviews with Morrison and such but AFAIK 'Batman and Robin' is still being solicited for months to come

Just read "Our Love Is Real," at the behest of Cormacaroni. Steven Sanders' art is a beautiful way to tell this transhuman, transgressive, pansexual story.

alfred came along after robin

if we are going to split hairs about the order in which they appeared in the 40's, yes

in the only continuity any of us care about today, Alfred came first

come at me comic book bro, come at me

Miller/Mazzuchelli Year One good enough for ya? Bruce rings the bell, Alfred stops the bleeding, 'I shall become a bat'...?

So what's been better or at least a style comparison? Snyder's Batman or Morrison's Batman. I've started the Morrison stuff and once I get up to the new Batman Inc maybe I'll dabble in the Synder stuff, but all this recent talk about Damian and the Death of a Family has just made me wonder what Batman should I be reading. I mean I honestly don't care about continuity, these are super hero comics so whatever, I'm just interested in if the actual story is good.

I like Morrison from New X-men, but it seems Synder is pretty praised, but reading your guys post makes it seem like his recent story was pretty meh? Was it just kind of bad because it didn't effect the continuity, but other then that it was a decent story or was it just bad.

The only Batman stuff I've read is Dark Knight Returns, Year One, and Killing Joke. I just picked up Hush and the Morrison stuff up till Batman and Robin.

Anyway another update to my comic reading.

I got the first Y The Last man hardcover. It was pretty great, I guess Brian K Vaughn just writes believable characters and dialogue. I don't know, thats what I've gotten from this and Saga even though both have some crazy situations. Either way the stuff is on sale at instocktrades.com so I just bought the rest of it.

I also picked up the first few parts of Planetary because Warren Ellis seems pretty good as I've enjoyed Nextwave and Transmetropolitan. Though it sounds pretty intense.
