ehhh, if you got through Transmet, Planetary will have nothing to shock you

I've generally enjoyed Snyder on Batman - this last arc is the first real misstep from him i think. Even then it was skillfully done 'til the end so was at least a compelling read.

The greatest thing about Batman is that every great writer or artist in comics, pretty much, has taken a shot at him at some point. You can go through the archives of Batman or Detective and find amazing stuff from every era. Recently I found a run of Peter Milligan-penned 'Tec issues that were great, for example. There are of course hundreds of bad or dull or goofy issues in there as well but you should by no means restrict yourself to the $3.99 books on the shelves right now

My favorite Batman was No Man's Land even though it sprawled all over the damn place. (And the trades are missing entire sections of the story so you're almost better off torrenting the fanmade packs.) And I've always had a soft spot for War Games/War Crimes because I love Black Mask.  :-[

One aspect I loved about Gotham Central, Catwoman and Batgirl were often how they handled Batman, it's like they fleshed him out as what it was like when he's not there as this epic force that controls Gotham but he's always sorta present in everyone's mind.

In other words, I agree with Cormac, you can find lots of great (or at least acceptable) Batman if you just stab at random almost. I don't think that about really any other major superhero/group.

Legends of the Dark Knight before it got sucked into the normal Batman universe was a series I really liked. And I think it was Gotham Knights that tried to redo that? Though it wasn't quite as good IIRC.

Yeah, finding that log about how he had escaped immediately was such a disappointment.  :lol

I always thought he would have fit perfectly into the purported vision of Nolan's Batman. I easily could see him as the only "survivor" crimelord of the Joker's terror in The Dark Knight for a sequel.

I probably would have been so upset about the Hush "payoff" in any other game but I was just like  :o as it all came together. All the dread I felt was entirely from the comics.  :lol

That and Mad Hatter were two of the best parts of Arkham City.

I loved the little hints left around Arkham in the first game too. Both games were some of the few total geek-out moments I had this gen. Especially with the voicework.

The first game was great trying to tell people about without lapsing into either my Batman fanboyism or Metroid fanboyism.  :lol

I liked Darwyn Cooke's Catwoman run. I want to repurchase the TPB, as the one I bought at ImageCon in Oakland last year did not survive a reading session in the bathtub.

I loved that entire Catwoman series and hated how it got derailed by DC EVENTS. Especially since I came off the first volume which was all 90's action. I had done all the Batman stuff up until Final Crisis and then looped back around to cover some of the side books, and Gotham Central of course was amazing, but Catwoman was a really nice surprise I always read past where I intended to each night.

And mentioning Batman, I thought the use of Bruce was smart in that series. The relationship from that side. Even if they could only play with it, not make anything too permanent.

bork's summary is kinda accurate though.

Jennifer Blood continues to be wildly entertaining and unpredictable. I actually thought this issue would be it, but no, it appears there will be a 24th :lol

I really have no idea when or where this one will end up, it is so far off the reservation at this point. Highly recommended for Exodus or anyone else tired of the DC/Marvel continuity treadmill. These are not arty indie comics by any means, very accessible

Jennifer Blood is definitely fun.  Remember to check out Jennifer Blood: First Blood and The Ninjettes spin-off, too!

I mean, i'm STILL not 100% convinced. Maybe you guys have all read interviews with Morrison and such but AFAIK 'Batman and Robin' is still being solicited for months to come

Sure..."Batman and Robin."  Not "Batman and Damien."

It wouldn't be any kind of surprise to see Damien come back, either.  Everyone else seems to die and come back.   :lol

Was it something like Xorn was actually Magneto in disguise, then they retconned this?

They don't even need the Lazarus Pit, given that Talia basically brought him back to life already in Batman and Robin. I mean, they have all these cloned bodies ready to harvest for organs as well as at least one full-grown clone (the dude who killed him) running around. It's the biggest backdoor ever basically. Morrison wants to close the book on him for a while to give some weight to his whole story and restore the status quo, but he or some version of him will definitely be back at some point.

Anyway. I liked the issue, and they're right that Dick as Batman + Damian was basically the best flava combo ever. Cool creamy avocado and crispy salty bacon. They really should have left it the fuck alone for a few years more but oh well. DC needs Batman to be economically viable I guess.

It would be awesome if you could not start posting shit from Previews btw, Manabyte. I avoid that stuff for a reason

Comics fans are an endangered species, I guess there has to be some solidarity no matter how perfidious the crime

Got the 2nd volume of the big IDW Alex Toth illustrated biography in the mail today, incredible stuff. Definitely worth a flick through if you like guys like Steve Rude or David Mazuchelli and want to see some of their roots. He unfortunately rarely got to work on material worth much of a damn but he elevated almost everything he touched.

It makes sense when Diamond is telling retailers to expect some high-level management changes at Marvel to be announced at C2E2.

was at a comic store (where i bought the first two manhunter trades) and a guy said something about "beating someone up" more to himself than anyone around him and he was called out by store staff who said "we don't accept violent talk in here.  if you keep speaking like that, we'll have to ask you to leave."

i thought it was kind of funny considering that 90% of the guy's store deals with people who are unable to solve their problems without resorting to violence.

as humorous a cover your ass policy as the "THESE ARE FOR TOBACCO ONLY" signs in head shops.

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/batmans-mythology-boost-dc-18699718

Batman's transformative years are getting a few new twists.

DC Entertainment is going back into Bruce Wayne's past to see how he began his transformation from wealthy socialite to the scourge of Gotham's criminal underworld.

Key elements of the character's history are staying the same — the murder of Wayne's parents, for example — says Scott Snyder, the writer of "Batman" since its relaunch debuted in 2011.

"It's not 'let's redo the origin,'" he said Monday. "It's time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52."

Snyder said the decision grew out of the success of the first year-and-a-half of DC's New 52, a sweeping reorganization of the publisher's characters that saw many given new origins and costumes that blended those from their first appearances decades ago with contemporary changes.

Snyder said readers will see how the crime fighter found his calling and what challenges he faced when first donning the costume of the Dark Knight.

The augmented origin begins June in the pages of "Batman" in an 11-issue story called "The Year Zero" that is illustrated by Greg Capullo.

"We tried to preserve as much of Batman's history as we could and keep what we could of this history intact," Snyder said of the change. "It's 'The Zero Year,' the one that no one has told the story of before. We see how Bruce became the Batman, built the cave, faced off with his first super villain."

It's not so much an origin story as it is a view into Batman's formative years.

"We're not going to take apart 'Year One,'" Snyder said, referring to the Frank Miller-David Mazzucchelli four-issue arc that recounted how Wayne began to fight crime after years away.

Instead Snyder, an Eagle Award-winning writer whose other efforts for DC include "Swamp Thing" and "American Vampire," said the "Zero Year" story will give readers new glimpses into the Bob Kane-created character who made his first appearance in the pages of "Detective Comics" No. 27 in May 1939.

"It's time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52," said Snyder. "It builds up the mythology."

Speaking of needless and pointless revisioning, I finally got around to reading the rest of Marvel's The Twelve. As I read I pictured J. Michael Straczynski locking all the doors to his house, putting on a long fake beard and wig, lighting a pentagram-shaped arrangement of candles, and muttering to himself "So what happens now, Alan?" as he sits down at his desk to type.

Seriously, it's fascinating how badly the dude wants to be Alan Moore.

I blasted through Irredeemable, and its bonkers read in a few sittings, especially with the super-quick ending.

I also think Fatale is kinda screwed. Brubaker soon writing for computer game plots, it won't end well, just look what happened to Keiron Gillen.

Someone help me understand the new 52. Is this shit really all taking place in one giant universe? I feel like I'm missing out on some stories cause I'm not reading everything. I'm only buying the one's I like.

If you're only buying the ones you like, you're doing it right.

The Marvel #1 thing turned out to be a massive dump of free #1 issues on comixology btw. Lots of good stuff in there

I'm wondering about this too, because I think they have some Earth 2 books now? I haven't read very much of new 52.

well, Earth 2 has been part of DC mythology for ages. It's basically just a separate dimension where the Golden Age versions of the DC characters could hang out.

Is this new "New 52" Earth 2 a continuation of the old Earth 2 (which itself was a continuation of golden age superhero adventures) or is it a reboot kind of thing?

This whole New 52 has been very confusing on what all has been a reboot and what is a holdover to the old continuity. Like I think Green Lanterns and some (not all?) of the Batman books are continuations of the old continuity? And then Superman and Justice Leagues are reboots? Then there are ones like the Outsiders that half follow the old continuity (Red Hood's origin) half do reboot (Starfire seems to have nothing to do with her old Teen Titan self, and no idea if Red Arrow has anything do with his old Green Arrow version).

It just seems dumb to me that they went through this major reboot but then only half assed it and now things seem way more convoluted than they ever were.

It's a reboot. It has some of the same characters, but they're now younger and/or gayer.

Earth 2 is a clean reboot.

The deal with Morrison's Batman and Johns' GL is simply that they were popular, in the middle of long convoluted storylines, and were written by DC's most bankable talents (at the time). They simply had the clout to ensure that their books didn't get fucked with and thus got to keep their continuity. Basically every other book is a reboot that sort of tiptoes around those other books (the tightrope walking that Pete Tomasi does between Snyder's Batman and Morrison's Batman Inc is something to behold).

I don't really think  DC has enough good books to justify making any kind of effort to understand this stuff though. Tied-in storylines CAN make a bad book better but they will never make it good.
