This was nice week for comics from what I read thus far but the real stand out this week was Ninjak. Really entertaining stuff.

Superman and Wonder Woman are getting new costumes in addition to "mecha rabbit Batman."

Not impressed with any of these.  The Superman one is OK and is basically just the Action Comics New 52 look, sans-cape, but he looks too young.  Wonder Woman with blade-arm things is just silly.  Ditch those and ditch the stars and it looks a little better.  And Batman...uh...I hope that's not really Batman and is someone else.   :P

This Black Vortex crossover is pretty shit. Trial of Jean Grey was so much better and I feel like they're just trying to recreate that magic and it's just not working.
Bendis' X-men is shit.

Read through the Green Lantern crossover story "Godhead" last week.  This, another in what has been an endless series of "BUY EVERY LANTERN BOOK!  CROSSOVER!!!!" stories where the Green Lanterns get their asses kicked and their reputation tarnished, is about the leader of the New Gods, High Father, wanting to use the power of the various rings to stop Darkseid.

I'm not really all that familiar with the New Gods, but I thought that they were supposed to be good guys.  They are presented entirely as villains and High Father is a dictator-like asshole who tricks White Lantern Kyle Rayner into giving him his power, which he then uses to brainwash others into becoming his soldiers, all to take over Earth and stop Darkseid when he invades.

The only Lantern character who seems to have any amount of balls in this storyline is Sinestro, who has been getting more and more badass as of late.  He's a dictator-like asshole too, but more likeable.  Plus he has 'tamed' the Parallax entity and unleashes it to kick some New God ass.  He even gives one of them a yellow ring, which she ends up using in a post-storyline book.

Anyway, this story kind of drags on, with various New Gods confronting Lanterns, laughing at their light powers, kicking their asses, and taking their rings.  Rinse, repeat.  The whole time I read this, I kept wondering why nobody called out High Father for essentially acting just like Darkseid.  This finally does happen at the very end, and from those words alone, dude is like "OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE SORRY EVERYONE" and they shake hands and call it all off, despite the fact that the New Gods have brutally slaughtered numerous Lanterns.   Black Hand is involved in this story, too, but doesn't do much more than marvel at the source wall (look it up...too much to explain) and ends up destroying a part of it, freeing the various characters trapped there.

And with that, all these books are done-- DC is cutting down the Lanterns to just Green Lantern and Sinestro.  Red Lanterns, Green Lantern Corps, and Green Lantern New Guardians are all ending/over.  Just as well, since Red Lanterns devolved from an interesting book about a small group of alien misfits into "the Guy Gardner book" and the other two were pretty boring.

The most recent Green Lantern story has Hal Jordan turning in his ring -he figures if he pretends that all the shit that has happened to the Green Lanterns is because of him specifically, the galaxy will just hate on him instead of the whole corps- but then going into their arsenal and taking this prototype weapon, which looks like a gauntlet attached to a battery that you wear like a backpack, and has all the Green Lantern powers but is not connected to their ring network or whatever, beats up Kilowog because.....reasons...and then 'escapes.'

I should also put out that this issue starts with a group of aliens essentially telling Hal that he's respected but his corps is not, so what he did makes no sense to me.

The Image comics version of TMNT had Dontatello killed, then resurrected as a cyborg, with the cyborg 'CPU' in control of everything.  In other words, this was Erik Larsen's version of Deathlok.  Don't remember how this ended or if it ended at all since TMNT left Image and went elsewhere.

Was more fucked-up than I remember:

Quote
This volume is notable for having a faster pace and more intense action while inflicting major physical changes on the Turtles themselves; Leonardo losing a hand, Raphael's face being scarred, Splinter becoming a bat, and Donatello becoming a cyborg. In a startling plot twist, Raphael even took on the identity of The Shredder and assumed leadership of the Foot. With Volume 3, the Turtles were incorporated into the Image universe, which provided opportunities for a few crossovers and guest appearances by characters from the The Savage Dragon series. The series ceased publication in 1999.

Oh yeah, the original comics were a little dark n' gritty. I remember being the only kid who read the source material and was disappointed by how much more lighthearted the cartoon was in comparison.  Still watched it religiously though.   :lol   I lost my shit when they had an Usagi Yojimbo crossover episode.  They actually called the character "Usagi Yojimbo" (literally "Rabbit Bodyguard" instead of his name.)  Ran upstairs and was frantically telling my older brother to come down and see it.  How do I remember all this?

spending time with the gf last week, since she's a big wig at a major comic book publisher, i ended up reading a bunch of stuff.

she had early copies of the next Squirrel Girl and Return of the Living Deadpool and Spider-Gwen and just a... ton of other stuff as well.

Squirrel Girl was legit surprisingly great. Super funny.

I kind of want to subscribe to Marvel Unlimited and grab a tablet and dig into this stuff. Anyone go this route? I was thinking a Nexus 7 since it's a bit older. It would really only be for comics.

So, who said Black Panther (Priest) was good?

Cause the first 5 or so issues where he decks Mephisto in the face were great, but man o' man is it crap from that point on.  Achebe is an awful villian, Malice jealous girl is :\, KILLMONGER arc is fucking terrible.  I've been slogging my way 30 issues in now out of about 60 through this Priest run and occasionally there's a good few issues, but it's really pretty bad stuff.  BP seems like a cool dude, but his antagonists and these arcs in general are just awful.  There was an arc recently that went super politcal with Namor and world war III standoffs and was fairly interesting, but otherwise it's been bad.  I'll stick with it through the end because I've got the time and am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but people said Priest was the good Black Panther run?  Because if this is good then I don't want to see bad Black Panther.

The New 52: Future's End is over with #48.  Here's the ending, from the past few issues:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sure there's other stuff that went on, but this series was DC Comics Terminator.  Brother Eye is Skynet, Terry McGinnis is Kyle Reese.  Batman Beyond goes back in time to stop Brother Eye from taking over the world in the beginning of the series and is pursued by a Batman/Joker hybrid cyborg thing. In the end, Terry gets killed before he can time travel, again, to stop the Eye (who was activated to stop Brainiac), and Tim Drake puts on his costume and takes his place.  He time travels to a satellite orbiting earth and convinces Brother Eye not to let ships carrying Earth 2 refugees (series tie in!) come to this universe and stop itself ftom taking over the world.  Tim goes back to what he thinks should be a changed future and finds that Brother Eye took over anyway, making things worse.  He gets rescued by resistance members including The Atom and his now-aged girlfriend, the former Firestorm, and vows to stop Brother Eye again.

So I assume this will be the basis for the upcoming Batman Beyond comic.

Tim FINALLY becoming Batman (in some kind of semi-official canon)

Batman Eternal ended today as well with issue #52, and while I think it kind of fell off the rails a bit towards the end (and the Specter/Corrigan/Batwing/Arkham shit was a perpetual drag and pretty much wasted filler), Snyder knows how to do a finale.

DC Convergence Zero:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Superman is held prisoner by huge Galactus-sized Brainiac, who tells him how he's gone to multiple realities and Superman always causes problems for him and blah blah blah.  We see scenes from previous comics, like Lois crying over Superman's body after Doomsday kills him and Power Girl crying over the older Earth 2 Superman's body (pre-crisis?) after he's dead and Superman just being dead in general.  Superman is then sent to a "living planet" that exists outside of time and space.  The planet itself is Brainiac's slave and manifests itself as various versions of the humanoid Brainac from past comics.  Superman is shown that the planet has control of various domed cities from different realities and tests are run on them to see how the people react to things.  And then Superman gets upset and leaves or something and what the fuck is this.

Somehow Snyder's made her into a cool character. I remember Steph getting a lot of hate pre-New 52, but by the end of Eternal she's saved Batman's ass and punched the main bad guy in the face. They also somehow made her dad Cluemaster somewhat threatening, lol.

How often does Marvel Unlimited update/catch up with print issues? I finished all 8 issus of Ms. Marvel and realized the series has progressed further than what the app lead me to believe (issue 14?)

As an aside, I'm looking to jump on a next series/arc that's complete on Unlimited. Any suggestions? Nextwave looks cool.

Well, I stand by that there's a lot of junk in the run (Achebe, Malice, Killmonger :\), but there are occasional good arcs like I mentioned with the opening issues, the war arc with Namor, I just read an arc with MAN-APE that was pretty engaging last night (around issue 33/34 now I think).  The run is written in a solid narrative structure and BP himself is great and some of the side characters in his group are good, but man does he have some of the worst D-tier villain lineup.  His best stuff is when they bring in other established Marvel characters to brush up against.  It feels like most of his main antagonists were created back in a super racist era where they're like "So there's this black guy, and he's from Africa and he dresses up as an Ape and we'll call him MAN-APE"  ::)  Or the evil white poacher man called KLAW.  It's all just kind of embarrassing stuff.

This should really be "Earth 2 Convergence #1," because some of that crew are the focus and this is a direct continuation of that series, meaning that if you didn't read it, you'll have no idea what the fuck is going on.  They get transported to DC battleworld and are told they are an anomaly since they have no city accompanying them.  Totally-not-the-Beyonder Brainiac minion Telos then tells everyone that they are going to fight for their cities and the winner gets a new world and hey look it's already spoiled because we know Earth 2 is continuing.

I can only assume that Bendis had to rush things because of Secret Wars, but at the same time...he knew it was coming.  I got to page 12 and realized this was the last issue and wondered how the story could possibly be resolved, only to find that all the action happened completely off-panel with no real explanations other than "I think I got a new power lolwut."   :-\

Convergence Supergirl (Matrix), written by Keith Giffen, was a fun read.  I don't recall things being this way in the 90s, but the younger-bodied Lex Luthor pretty much treats her like his incompetent sidekick and she watches the two people she's supposed to fight argue over relationship issues, then runs into Ambush Bug.  Too bad this is only two issues long; it was way more entertaining than any of the other Convergence stuff.

In the main book, Earth 2 Batman (Thomas Wayne) and Earth 2 Dick Grayson (who was never Robin or Nightwing) met pre-New 52 Alfred and Batman.  Nothing really happened though.  Which kind of sums up this event in a nutshell so far.

Just finished:
Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man: Death of Peter Parker TPB - felt rushed and lazy. CAVEAT: I have only read the TPB, have NO IDEA about what has come before or after, don't really care because fuck spider-clones and a bazillion earths diluting hero meaning. Captain America shows up, tells Peter he doesn't know enough about war, Spider-Man shows up on a bridge fight where Punisher is going to assassinate Captain America, and Spidey takes the bullet. Cap abandons Spidey on the bridge, WHAT THE FUCK?

Also finished Fraction's Hawkeye: My Life As a Weapon (v.1); humorous and meaty stories with a character I previously cared NOTHING about. I'll be buying more.

I think the entire lead up to that arc had no real build up/foreshadowing. If I remember correctly, it just happened, the biggest hints were the red banners on the covers telling you Peter was going to die. All the other storylines felt like regular stuff that could have lead to other story lines and oh yeah he's gotta die now lol.

Even the feels with Aunt May at the end, I just felt it was so strange -- I caught the feels, sure, but it also felt forced. Manipulative.

And hey, guess what happens in regards to the death of Peter Parker in the Mile Morales Ultimate Spider-Man comics?
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Peter just shows back up again!  SURPRISE, HE'S NOT DEAD!  How?  Who knows, who cares!  He's back, helps Miles beat SURPRISE I'M NOT DEAD EITHER Green Goblin, then says Miles can be Spider-Man since he just wants to go off and fuck Mary Jane or whatever.

Everyone has known iceman has always been gay. He almost came out to Jean grey back in the 90s and another time, Emma frost entered his mind and made a gay joke. He's always been a closet case. His last 2 "relationships" have coincidentally been with mutants who can transform into male bodies.

I don't get why he just didn't make him bi, it would've made sense with his history with women but also then open up a new layer for him and the future version. But instead there's years of denial which retcons for retcons sake, then they bring up "oh it'd be hard to gay where we're from" which doesn't make sense because they can't be from the 1960's because of the sliding time scale, Not to mention there's already another gay character in cast: Benjamin. Part of the new set of characters he introduced in the series, what's the point of introducing another gay (white) male character? It's clearly diversity for diversity sake, at least make him bisexual which would make sense(which would actually add to the universe because I think of any canon bisexual male characters at Marvel), not this nonsense "full gay" shit.

Iceman was with some Asian chick who had a kid in X-Factor and he was put with Kitty Pryde up until a year or two ago.

...Kitty Pryde can turn into a dude?   :o

I was talking about Mystique and Cloud. I forgot about Opal Tanaka and Kitty/Bobby was a two-way beard agreement.

Daken (Wolverine's evil bastard son) is bi and it has been clearly depicted in comics he's been in.  There's a list of characters here.

Even with the sliding timescale, the All New X-Men are coming from the late 90s/early 00s. Gay acceptance back then was a lot different than now.

There's quite a long list of bisexual men in Marvel. Daken, Prodigy, Hercules, Rictor, just to name a few.

Richter is full-on gay and in a relationship with Shatterstar, I thought.

The sliding timescale makes no sense for the New X-Men.  They looked like the 60s characters.   :lol

He had a thing with Wolfsbane back during the original X-Factor/New Mutants and then later again during the early days of Madrox's X-Factor. I think he dated Boom Boom too at one point in the 80s.
