Supposedly SE lost $200 mil on the two Marvel games.

Yeah, this entire situation is caused 100% by Avengers bomb which led to Guardians bomb as fallout.

And pretty sure the entire Avengers situation was caused 100% by SE wanting to make it a GAAS and telling CD "figure something out" instead of letting them just make a single player TR style game.

All they had to do was make Lego Marvel but as an “adult” game.

I mean it probably would have sucked anyway as CD is kind of mediocre based on those two TR games, but it probably would have done better.

As an "adult" game like Tomb Raider or as an "adult" game like the New Releases list on Steam?

I just meant adult as obviously not specifically  aimed at kids. Like the Spider-man PS4 game or X-men Legends.

I get the sense the core audience for marvel movies are satisfied with Fortnite skins and f2p mobile games. With guardians specifically, whatever entity is making these decisions dramatically overestimated the appeal of the brand.

I mean I don’t care, but I disagree.

Maybe the kids are but there’s a huge audience of 25+ Marvel/MCU dweebs who’d buy a good Avengers game. I mean comic book games have done pretty well. Spider-man, the Batman games, Lego Marvel games(not just kids buy and enjoy them), and so on. A good Avengers game should be an easy sell, especially at the heights of Avengers fame. A co-op brawler isn’t even a bad idea.

But people probably wanted a more traditional story based game. They probably wanted what the actual game has aspects of, the parts people have praised.

But the game was never shown off well. It had the look of a cheap knock off. And the whole gass aspect muddied the waters.

It’s strictly anecdotal from talking with friends with kids into the movies. Sounds counterintuitive but I think the Avengers game so closely modeled after the movies hurt the appeal. Way I see it, Marvel movie and marvel comics fans aren’t exactly the same. There’s greater overlap with marvel comics fans and older single player games fans. I’m saying it poorly. That’s okay.

Anyway, wish they’d patch Arkham Knight for PS5.

I think they should've went full movie. To me the characters just looked generic. Why do the Avengers if you can't get the real actors and voices.  :doge
The game had other problems too but overall it just didn't look very interesting. They should've made a Black Widow Tomb Raider clone or something.

The Guardians game is considered pretty good. It just had a terrible E3 showing that killed any interest before launch.

I don't think that's it. I think Guardians would have done very well financially if:

1) Avengers didn't suck shit for months before it

2) SE had actually marketed the game properly. The trailers and marketing were all goddamn awful. After being burned on Avengers and seeing random clips that looked like ass, who was going to put money down on this? Probably would've gone a long, long way if they had released a demo of the first hour or two and people could play it and decide if it was up their alley.

Tbh, GotG characters looked like generic characters to me too... Just like Avengers.  All the money dropped on these and they couldn't use any actor likenesses or even voices?  :doge
And yeah, if not, them just keep it simple like MUA3.. People still liked it.. probably moreso than these other AAA shits they shat.. And I bet it's budget was probably half the others..

Anywho, it's about time they quit playing in colorful, spandex suits and get back to a game with cojones; Deus Ex.

Sorry, should've been clearer. Meant in general, even before the new game. They had the Telltale game. They had Tower of Terror remade to some guardians ride in the parks. I get why, from their perspective. But in my limited and anecdotal experience, people didn’t seem excited from the announcement. Seemed like an uphill sell. And totally agree had they marketed and showed it better, people could’ve come around.

To put it another way, when I looked at the immediate reaction to the Wolverine or Wonder Woman trailers, people seemed excited by the prospect. Even Avengers post release, people seemed excited for the Black Panther DLC. They should do a full on Black Panther game.

I would imagine getting the voice or likeness of the actual Marvel cast would have just killed the budgets even worse. The Spiderman and Batman games seem to do OK doing their own thing but evidently that Avengers game was stuck in a manner of uncanny valley...

I didn't play Dying Light until the free weekend last year and it's pretty cool. I thought it would be a lot closer to Dead Island but the parkour and world is quite well done. Should play more of it, I was getting into too much trouble exploring the limits of my current status and then trying to scramble back up to the rooftops while being swarmed hoping that I wouldn't find myself on an island and be able to get back to the safety of lights. (The zombies are docile during the day but more feral in the dark, so safe zones will have things like giant arrays of flood lights.)

Hadn't the original FF14 just stank out the industry not long before Tomb Raider and Sleepy Dogs :doge
Supposedly SE lost $200 mil on the two Marvel games.
I wonder if there's unspoken or unwritten costs to that price tag, like an inevitable restructuring or solid severance packages to pay for if they trim this down.

SQEX is almost certainly using clever accounting to push some other projects' losses toward Crystal Dynamics. Sure, Avengers was expensive, but it wasn't a $200M project even on its own. That's GTA V money. Crystal manages to lose enough talent on its own on a monthly basis that it's unlikely any massive layoffs or severance packages were needed.

As for FF XIV, yes, that was the project just prior to TR's launch that was hacked and had its weird outsource and target audience choices exposed, then launched to horrible reviews, fell on its face. Despite this, no mention of FF14 in the losses that year; EVERYTHING was blamed on the western studios despite TR, Sleeping Dogs, Thief, and Hitman all making money but not hitting RIDICULOUS and IRRESPONSIBLE sales predictions from Marketing.

Have I mentioned today that I hate Marketing?

FIFA dead:
Video games publisher Electronic Arts says it is going to stop making Fifa branded football titles.

Its EA Sports subdivision made the first Fifa game in 1993 and has been in charge of the franchise ever since.

It is one of the most profitable brands in gaming history, but the cost of the licence was one reason why the decision was made to ditch the partnership.

EA will continue to make football video games, but from 2023 they will come under a new banner, EA Sports FC.

While the gameplay mechanics and core modes of play will be similar to what players have come to expect in recent years, this change will likely see the title offer a broader range of other experiences, beyond just the ability to play.

Speaking to the BBC, David Jackson, vice president at EA Sports, explained that the studio thinks it's time to move in a different direction in order to build a "brand for the future".

Well that settles the debate of what would happen to FIFA if EA was sold off.

That license would be worth it for Sony or another publisher though.
If your game is named 'FIFA' that's getting the sales, not EA Sports FC or whatever.

The FIFA licence itself is kinda worthless tho and you don't get anything from it besides being able to do an official world cup mode. EA have almost every license they really need tied up anyway, I suppose they've taken the plunge for a rebrand this year because Konami aren't in position to pick the licence given the state of the latest pro evo and call that shit FIFA 23.

https://twitter.com/Apogee_Ent/status/1524118484195713024

The more I see of the leak the more I don't get why they didn't just finish it for a 2002 release.
It holds up quite well for a 2001/2002 game stacked up against the likes of HALO, NOLF2, TimeSplitters 2 and 007 Nightfire.

Better graphics technology and engines existed, yes. But they mostly existed on paper until 2004 when Half Life 2 and the likes released.
DNF could've had a healthy 2 year run (especially with a release on Xbox/PS2/GameCube) and a sequel in 2005.

FIFA has confirmed they will make FIFA games

Quote
According to the footballing body, discussions are currently ongoing with “leading game publishers, media companies and investors” in regard to the development of a new FIFA simulation football game for 2024, which would directly compete with EA Sports FC.

Sooner than that, multiple “non-simulation” games are already under production and will launch during the third quarter of this year, the first of which is described as “a tailored gaming experience” featuring the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
A lot of publishers probably willing to jump on this. Ubisoft seems like a possible candidate but also Netflix with a tie-in TV show like they did for Formula 1.

Yeah, I actually think there was a rumor about this a couple years ago. Without looking it up maybe EA signed a weirdly short deal last time or something.

EA all but admitted they made a mistake when they bought up every license in sight including shit like Arena Football so they were dumping a number of deals. The NCAA one was probably the one that upset most people.

EA can't just cut the FIFA name. That's akin to Nintendo dropping the Pokemon brand and calling it Monster Club or something and someone else continues to publish Pokemon games.
They will need to invest the $2 billion they saved on the license in marketing for this to work if there is a competitive FIFA product on the market from Ubisoft or another publisher.

FIFA is one of the few games that people buy just because it has the name FIFA.
In Europe it's not uncommon for people to own a PlayStation with just 2 games: GTA and FIFA and the FIFA-only gamers are probably the only group that still buys this shit every year just to get the latest team rosters.

I am not a metric football expert by any means but my understanding was that teams and players could increasingly be licensed outside of the FIFA license. In effect the goal would be similar to as if EA could license all the teams and players but skip the NFL license and get by on the Madden name with all the stuff people care about anyway.

I'm not saying EA can pull this off, especially with FIFA being the actual name of the game unlike Madden, but if the licensing situation is such at some point you do have to evaluate if you're massively overpaying for a brand. With the FIFA organization I would assume that's the case by default.

The FIFPro licence is really far more important (global players union thing that gives them likeness rights, not associated with FIFA itself).

EA have that and all the big leagues.

I do hope someone else joins the scene, with pro evo being free to play dog shit now (pes2020 was a pretty great playing if flawed game) and the last 5 or 6 FIFAs being kinda stale and samey.

Anyone who had even a slither of hope starfield was coming this year had to be a fool. I'd be amazed if it made 2023.

I'm very intrigued to see what it looks like tho graphically, It don't even trust Todd to drop something that looks remotely new gen, I'm expecting some thing that looks like an early PS4 pro era title.

My brother said to me it's worse than people think in the industry right now. COVID, the transition to UE5 and the war in Ukraine.

Lots of publishers outsource different things to Ukraine/Russia and most of those studios were already fully booked prior to the war.
The industry moving to UE5 (and additional studios dropping their own engines in favor of UE5) also means that experienced UE devs are in short supply.
Everyone also got spooked by what happened with CP2077 and a few sure bets like Battlefield 2042 and Avengers.

Not to mention the restructuring following the many acquisitions and #metoo situations.
