I always lumped High on Fire with Sleep and Mastodon as bands that I'd just never be able to fuck with, but that track

I refute Esch's claim, those Louisiana based sludge groups are definitely not doom-oriented. NOLA is an absolute classic, COC had a great run from Blind-Wiseblood, and Eyehategod -probably the quintessential sludge band- does not incorporate that drone shtick that's so prevalent in doom. I lump stoner bands like Orange Goblin and Clutch into that same category because to me, this genre is defined by it's bluesy, downtuned guitars and scraping vocals ridden with Lovecraftian depression. Also (and I can't believe I'm assigning myself this L

), a lot of the aforementioned bands have a grunge streak. Song structure is, for the most part, formulaic and straightforward; there's a heavy emphasis on dynamic melody and rhythym, but nothing earth-shattering. None of that is necessarily detrimental. The genre is about riffing and screaming, and the simple approach leaves room for both of those to breathe. It's dope music to blast out of your car on a hot, muggy summer afternoon or bust out a riff from on your friends Les Paul (like I could do that

).
Also, can we talk about how in addition to being a Viking guido culture vulture, Zakk Wylde is also the biggest #sadboy in the metal industry?
