God dammit just noticed Amazon charged me $80 for Amazon Prime service; I used it to get my dad his father's day gift awhile ago, then used it for a book. Amazon's site says the money will be refunded as long as you didn't buy anything since getting the service. I haven't bought anything since I was charged (on the 20th), and I just cancelled the subscription so they better refund my money or I'll be pissed

Exactly where my frustration comes from. Scottish and Irish have horrible accents, yet they would get a job over me just because I am not a native speaker. Japan and Korea are so stuck up on this grr.

The hang-up on accents is utterly daft because in all seriousness, most Japanese students will never get to the kind of level where the accent is the limiting factor in understanding them. My daughter is in an English language kindergarten, and we're already hearing crap from the other (Japanese) parents about how they don't want their 3yr old learning from an Irish teacher or a Canadian teacher etc. Fucking ridiculous. My kid actually speaks English, unlike theirs, and I don't give a crap - on the contrary, I actually think exposure to a variety of accents is a necessity, not a problem. Basically, they are living in some dream world. Some parents are even pushing for their kids to be put into a different class, more suitable for their more advanced level - the kids barely can sing the Alphabet Song...

Other than Quebeckers, and very occasionally prounouncing "ou" as though it were "oo" Canadians sound just like Americans. And if any of you boritos are Canadian and shaking your head at this, AMERICANS CANNOT TELL YOUR ACCENTS APART FROM OUR OWN.

In fact, in my experience, it's usually Americans who try to insist that our accents are soooo different, not Canadians.

It's been the opposite for me. When Canadians announce themselves as such, and I'd thought they were American, they seem to inevitably be stunned that I was unable to tell. By their accent. And I point out to them that they've never evidenced an accent, and they go bat-poo-poo.

When that happened to me I just called and said I didn't know that it was on auto renew and while I liked the trial I didn't use Amazon enough to justify it. they refunded me with no issue.

Every single job I've ever had was based on nepotism to some degree. I met the qualifications for them all, but knowing people helped a ton.

For example, I went to graduate school, got good grades, got my Master's degree and state certification, but I ultimately got the job because:

1. I knew someone on the school board.
2. The assistant superintendent was my high school principal. His wife is also a school psychologist.
3. I went through the district as a student.

I had to work my butt off, but knowing people did help.

This morning on my way to work I was listening to a radio show on 93.7 FM. It's a classic rock channel. The show is Walton and Johnson. It's two right wing rednecks that never shut up about politics. Who you know is very important. Connections mean a lot because it means that you're a safe(r) alternative to hiring some schlub off the street that could be a huge mistake.

Speaking of work, it is getting very frustrating lately. I've applied for a better job and had a steady stream of positive recommendations flow through to the hiring manager but our human resources department accidentally rejected all applicants. Plus the hiring manager is gone on vacation so much that it will be at least a couple of weeks before I even start to hear about a possibility of getting an interview. I've got to sound interested without appearing desperate. Any tips about moving up throughout the company? While I'm sure I have it in the bag, I want to make sure that I remain in that standing and not underdo anything or overdo anything.
