While the JR Smith situation is regrettable ultimately it's on Lebron because he was the one that told the Cavs to resign (at a bloated rate for JR's actual worth, natch) Smith. Let your star player be your GM, brehs.

Good, way better than expected game. Unfortunate it went down that way but players occasionally make boneheaded plays. That's basketball. Especially for JR.  :-\

Lue should have also been ready and in position to call a timeout imo if need be. (or somebody else)

Herculean game by Lebron as expected.

Yeah on further reflection and rewatching my dvr out of curiosity, Lue had one timeout and I don’t know why he also wasn’t immediately ready to call that?

4 seconds is plenty of time to set up a play and get a decent look.

It also would have been nice if George Hill had just hit his two free throws. I mean he is a 80% free throw shooter for his career.  :'(

But that's the bounce of the ball.

Everyone will focus on JR, but those refs were shit in the last 3-4 minutes. Played a much bigger part in the Cavs losing than his brain fart.

For what its worth I almost never personally ever bitch about calls. I tend to view it as a crutch. Sometimes you get calls. Sometimes you don't. I don't like conspiracy style discussion although of course individually you will have poorly officiated games.

That went more like how I expected Game 1 to go. Probably gonna end up like 4-1 I would say. Cavs may sneak one at home.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23695581/zach-lowe-warriors-vs-cavaliers-game-2-2018-nba-finals
Quote from: Zach Lowe
For the Rockets, this was not an adjustment. It was a return to principles they drilled all season with an eye on the Warriors. They had developed habits, and those habits carried them within one win -- and who knows, maybe one hamstring pull -- of the NBA Finals.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have few habits, unless you count lazing through the regular season and fatuous melodrama. They are trying to develop habits on the fly against an opponent that demands something barely short of perfection -- an opponent against which "switch everything" is only step one of a feasible game plan.

Like a student cramming for finals after skipping class the entire semester, the Cavs cobbled a brand new blueprint just for these Finals.

...

The new plan meshed habits old and new. It amounted to playing two schemes at once. It was perhaps the best combination of ideas available on short notice. It was also entirely predictable that a team with such a weak defensive infrastructure would fail when suddenly confronted with multiple sets of rules. Information overload can paralyze even elite defenses.

Failure came, repeatedly, in the first quarter of Game 1. When Curry targeted Love, the Cavs collapsed in a haze of confusion: Are we switching? Wait, I thought we were trapping? Oh god, they scored already.

...

Houston had a basic rule for defending Curry, says Jeff Bzdelik, the architect of their switchy defense: When Capela switched onto Curry, no one was allowed to help from anywhere -- even if Curry slithered inside Capela off the bounce. Houston had confidence Capela could bother Curry from behind. They would live with Curry hitting contested layups because 3s would surely kill them.

...

"It's like you're in a boat with three holes in the bottom," Bzdelik says of defending Golden State, "and you only have two pegs to plug them. You just have to keep moving the pegs around."

The Rockets understood switching alone wouldn't be enough. They practiced how and when to help off Golden State's non-shooters, Bzdelik says. They had rules for specific situations -- baseline drives when the best shooter is in one particular corner, penetration down the middle, and more. Cleveland is improvising with lesser talent.

Golden State set 40 ball screens for Curry in Game 2, their fourth-highest single-game total since Durant joined, per Second Spectrum data. Two of the three games above that one on the same list: Game 1 of these Finals, and the Game 5 clincher a year ago. Two more among the top-10 such games happened in the just-concluded conference finals against Houston.

The Warriors lean on Curry's pick-and-roll game when they feel threatened, and when they see Love.

I’m coming around to the idea that Lebron just stays in Cleveland.  They need to clean house though.  JR, Hill, clarkson and Thompson should be gone.  Possibly Love.  I would go after PG, Leonard, and Cousins.  Keep Korver and get Ariza and maybe Reddick.  It’s gonna be expensive as fuck but they should just do it

It's really not super possible for him to stay in Cleveland and have that team overhauled into a "real" contender. They have too many contracts that are untradeable. Nobody is eager to take on contracts like Love, Thompson, etc. They are capped out so they can't sign free agents. And its not honestly a super desirable location for free agents anyway. I have no problem with Lebron staying and finishing out his career there but that team as constructed isn't going to get significantly better than they are currently.

It would take another team making significantly dumb trades with Cleveland for it to be feasible.

JR, Hill, Thompson, Clarkson, and Korver all have two years left on their contracts for over $70 million a year. The NBA soft cap system pushes contenders to overpay their own guys, add in the Kyrie trade you get this roster hell.

I posted it before but the Kyrie trade was always the death knell trade. You can't trade a top 10/15 player and get literally nothing for him. Especially with the cavs as constructed.. They needed a #2 to at least make the whole thing remotely viable and Love is not a #2 option on a real contending team.

"Accepting the challenge" of going to a young talent rich franchise with a ton of cap space and flexibility in one of the most coveted markets in the NBA for free-agents.

I think its gonna take more than. Some picks coming back their way especially whoever does the deal.

I was out of town so I missed the whole Kawhi thing. I was very surprised. I knew what happened during the season was more than nothing like Spurs fans tried to make it out to be but I didn't realize it was this bad.

Dwight got traded again, for the third time on this contract, to the Nets for Mozgov.

It's to cut down on Charlotte's potential luxury tax payments. Also apparently sets the Nets up for a massive amount of cap space in 2019 along with giving them three big expiring contracts to trade.

I like how last week Dwight was talking about how he regretted how he handled the SVG/forcing-a-trade situation, and now he's finally headed to the place he was trying to get traded to back then!
